starstella I am so glad your neighbour is having 2 kittens that you can enjoy without the responsibility of owning them.
You clearly are a cat lover like us all on this Black Cat thread. ?⬛

Black cats
(90 Posts)Here are my two beautiful little black panthers. When I look at them I always wonder how, in 2021, there is still so much prejudice against black cats. When I first adopted my two (sisters) someone asked me whether the shelter hadn't had any "nicer" ones. Have you encountered any instances of this?
That’s the trouble with these lovely creatures, they don’t live that long. We had one who turned up starving on our doorstep and we kept him for 20 years. I cried buckets when he died in the middle of the lockdown, it was awful. The vet let me be with him as he died and I still feel tears thinking about it. We made a memorial garden for him. Our new boy is very, very feisty but gradually settling. He is a rescue cat, needless to say and if we have to take him to the vet for treatment we have to warn them he is coming so they can prepare ! That feisty. He has a wonderful character. I am so glad there are some cat people here because only cat lovers understand our love for them. ?⬛
I wasn’t aware of any prejudice in modern times - I know there was centuries ago, though, when they were associated with witches.
We had a black cat called Mew - found by young dds as a seriously emaciated kitten when we were living in the Middle East. With the help of the vet she somehow survived, and we later spent a bomb flying her home with us, plus 6 months in quarantine.
She emerged sleek and glossy - only to be run over just 2 months later.?
However she’d almost certainly used up her 9 lives already.
MY BLACK CAT BEAUTY WAS LOVED BY EVERYONE SHE USED TO SIT ON THE FRONT WALL AND WOULD [TALK ]TO ANYONE,SADLY SHE GOT HIT BY A CAR.MY LAST CAT WAS A TABBY THE SWEETEST LITTLE CAT EVER.SHE TOO GOT HIT BY A CAR AND AFTER OWNING CATS FOR OVER 50 YEARS SHE IS MY LAST.I CRIED FOR WEEKS AND I WILL NEVER PUT MYSELF THROUGH THAT AGAIN.ON THE PLUS SIDE MY NEIGHBOUR IS HAVING TWO KITTENS THE START OF MAY SO I WILL BE ABLE TO SHARE.
My first cat ever, when I was a child, was a beautiful black cat called Jimmy. Sadly he was run over by a lorry. I cried buckets.
Puzzler61 oh just look at those gorgeous big eyes! She had a long life too, the oldest cat I had was 19.
All the black cats here are gorgeous! My friend recently adopted two black kitties from the same litter, Lucky and Charm. I think they are very regal looking, and for some reason their eye colour really pops on a black cat.
We had a black long-haired growing up, and a black and white. When I look at photos of my mother growing up, she always had a long-haired cat on her lap, black and white. Obviously a trend for her.
We don't have a cat now, but I do love them and enjoy seeing all your photos. Nothing as luxurious as a cat splayed out basking in the sun!
I love black cats, too. It is interesting that here in Australia they are considered bad luck if one crosses your path but in the UK they are good luck. Weird.
I adore black cats, it's the way they look at you and you can only really see their gorgeous eyes!
We have a couple of black cats living in my street and I love watching them in my garden. Unfortunately my neighbours don't feel the same way about any animal that 'trespasses' in their garden.
Paddy’s gorgeous! We have a 16lb-er too, Ladygracie, though ours is blue. He likes to ride around the house on dh’s shoulders.

A friend lived and worked on a Caribbean island for a few years. She adopted a black kitten but it was never allowed out as there was a local superstition that black cats were bad and it could possibly have been killed. When this friend returned to the UK she brought the cat with her. It was an expensive decision but to see the cat frolicking in the snow was a real treat. It now has a lovely life coming and going as it pleases outside.
Everyone’s beloved black cats are so beautiful.
We had one jet black female for 20 years and we were all besotted with her.
In my life I’ve had black and white cats and tabby cats too and they all have their own personalities.
I've always understood that all black cats have white hairs somewhere about their person. If you can't find at least one white hair, you have a witches cat. It took ages to find the white hairs on our panther, Fred. They were in a private place he didn't want us to inspect!
The black kitten in the book ( pictured upthread) enjoys making itself cheese toasties ( magic spells)? would your cat eat one if it found one on the kitchen countertop?
We used to have a ginger cat that actually sat up and begged for ham.
What a lot of lovely stories and pics of black cats.?
kitty you have three cats, lucky you.
My D has a rescue cat. The RSPCA man told her that the cat was very shy and quiet and would hide from them for quite a while when they took her home.
As soon as they let her out of her carrier she made a beeline for my Ds lap and started yowling at the top of her voice. She is the loudest cat I have ever known. She is always on someones lap and is a very loving cat but what a little actress.
Definitely not quiet and shy.
Artaylar, they are such characters, aren’t they? They have us wound round their little fingers (toes?) in no time at all!
SueDonim your story made me laugh - arch manipulators indeed, and what a little double act your two were.
The loving I got from Tish in the shop turned out to be a bit of an act too. Any loving I got from her after bringing her home was very much on her terms and very infrequent, and I'd get a little bite on my finger if I tried overdoing it on the loving front.
She does seem to have mellowed in older age though.
I adopted my black cat from Cats Protection nearly 2 years ago. Sadly it is true that black cats are the most difficult to rehome. When I went into her enclosure I sat in a chair near her and she climbed onto my knee, cuddled into me and I knew I had to give her a home with me.
She was very small for her age and I think must have been with other animals who had taken her food from her. She growled when she was eating but wanted me to stand near her bowl whilst she feeding to keep her safe. She is fine now,no growling and knows she is the boss in this relationship!
Artayler cats can be arch-manipulators. Your story reminded me of our very first two cats. We visited a rescue centre, intending to get just one cat. There were a number of cats wandering around and one of them, a tabby, made a beeline for Dh and jumped up on him and began purring and doing all those ‘I love you’ things cats do.
We thought he was the one but the manager said that if we took him, we had to take his friend, a very beautiful tortoiseshell, as well because they were inseparable. They certainly were very close, rubbing round each other and washing each other.
So, the following week, off we went, with two cats instead of one. We got them home, where everything was waiting them, let them out of their baskets and the two little wretches never so much as looked at each other again, let alone snuggle up or anything. Their twosome partnership had all been an act, it seemed!
The tortie in fact was ‘feisty’ and you could only stroke her head and ears, anywhere else and you risked life and limb. She’d also happily sit on your lap but if you dared move a muscle, woe betide! ?
We've had a couple of black cats too and they do seem to have good dispositions. I've been told by rescue centres that black ones are harder to rehome. The only cat colouring I'm wary of is any with white ears due to the sun burn they can get. A friend's cat had to have her white ears removed due to skin cancer.
Thanks for that AGAA4. It really is one of those strange but true stories.
My own view on it is that Tish knew a sucker when she saw one and gave something of an oscar winning performance
I am so loving all the beautiful pictures of folks' black cats being posted on here.
