Ours will always be the beautiful German Shepard. Loyal. Loving. Protective, big bundle of fun! We have had many over the last 60 odd years. Always well trained! I do love the mini schnauzers although never owned one.

Had so many dogs in my lifetime but four years ago in my sixties got a gsd - he has been a life changer - I just love him to bits - so clever and into everything but I love him even more for it!!!

Stella agree re Siamese cats, we had a beautiful one, she was a very intelligent girl who enjoyed a game of fetch…..

Always had Westies. So cute, tenacious but loving and cuddly. Now am tirn between black labrador and a cocker spaniel. Both are mad but so gentle and loving. They just need to give me a look with those appealing eyes and I give in everytime. Yes, you can sleep on the sofa!

Rescue dogs!
But do love Border collies, currently have a Romanian rescue which I think is Rat Terrier totally different!!!!

Boxers every time! Grew up with GSD and working Spaniels, but when I married my husband wanted a Boxer. Since then - 67 years later and a few Boxers - I still have 2. One is 13+ the other is just 4. Both brilliant as companions, guard dogs and superb with children. They are as mad as a box of frogs, but also well trained, both earning K.C. obedience certificates. Living alone as I do, they are my 'early warning' alarm if anyone comes near the bottom gate, giving me plenty of time to lock my door until I check who is calling!!

Which ever one is sharing their life with me at any particular time

I'm really more of a cat lady (got 4) but if I had a dog - a standard poodle.

Standard Poodles are the dog version of a cat. Very elegant and beautiful (they know it). They even wash their paws! My cats are Siamese - the cat version of dogs. They come to call and will even play fetch 😀

I've always adored whippets, greyhounds and lurchers.

Me too, but I have Siamese cats and chickens. I think a sight hound may be risky for our household.

The dog we had at any given time but our Springer (rescued) was unwell from the word go and was a bit challenging - even so we loved her. But our first dog cross collie/lab was the best dog ever to have barked, she didn’t much! But I won’t be disloyal to the others, our GS was brilliant. There you go - they were all great! Prefer big or medium sized dogs but can’t have any now as neither of us is fit to walk them. 😢☹️

icanhandthemback Mon 20-Mar-23 12:41:00

I don’t understand why people are so keen to go for Poodle crosses, when they could just have the real thing.

I didn't want a poodle, I wanted a retriever but couldn't cope with the hair shed. What I got was perfect for me. We had a Standard Poodle when I was young who was very snappy so I was nervous of them. One of our family members who bred and showed Standard Poodles was very upset with me and never spoke to me again after I got a Goldendoodle. I can't be doing with such snobbery.

nipsmum Mon 20-Mar-23 12:38:14

Over my lifetime I have had several breeds including Heinz 57 varieties. My rescued Springer Spaniel Nip was fantastic, he was so clever, my 2
West Highland Terriers have been lovely and Hattie who I have at the moment gives me great joy. Snowie was lovely and mixed breed, Trixie also mixed breed was a total nightmare and ripped the house apart. Candy was a Springer and also a joy to have . I love dogs.

Amalegra Mon 20-Mar-23 12:35:45

I love dogs full stop and have shared my life with different breeds over the years, GSD, collie, lab and others. But my favourite breed has to be the English Bull Terrier closely followed by the Staffordshire. Loyal and loving, I have found them a delight to have around despite a completely undeserved bad press. And of course I think they are beautiful too!

HannahLoisLuke Mon 20-Mar-23 12:30:15

I love all dogs but if I was fit enough to own one now I’d probably go for a rescue mongrel. In pedigrees I’d stay away from flat faced breeds, poor things can’t breathe. Also any dog that drools excessively.

Stella14 Mon 20-Mar-23 12:28:44

My Rottweiler bitch (sadly not with us any longer) was a wonderful dog. Sweet, gentle, wonderful with young children, cats and kittens, but protective of us all of course. When we were out with the kids and they were running around, she desperately ran circles trying to round us up! I would love to have another, but at 64 this year, I realise that with their strength, it wouldn’t be sensible. They are also the most gorgeous puppies. I have also had Standard and Toy Poodles for 22 years. They are the most cheerful, intelligent, non shedding breeds. I don’t understand why people are so keen to go for Poodle crosses, when they could just have the real thing 🤷‍♀️

Staffielover Mon 20-Mar-23 12:27:17

I have two Staffies and they are the best most loveable dogs ever!! Brilliant with kids too and fill my life with love and happiness.

Dee1012 Mon 20-Mar-23 12:21:19

Rottweilers, I adore them and hate the unfair reputation they have.
They love to be loved, and love to love, and always have a sense of real dependency with their owners, these are not the dogs to own if you don’t have the proper time to be at home with them (or train them, as Rottweilers come with serious responsibility), as their separation anxiety will cause them to grow restless, nervous, destructive, and aggressive....
Mine love other animals and people, they are intelligent, very affectionate and social and I love them very much.

Damdee Mon 20-Mar-23 12:16:45

Yorkie - or Pom! I like little dogs. Saw an adorable Jack Russell/Chihuahua cross when out walking the other day.

icanhandthemback Mon 20-Mar-23 12:11:38

I am so sorry for all those who have lost their beloved companions; I lost mine last year. He was a Goldendoodle and absolutely gorgeous in nature. I said I would never have another dog but after 8 months, I gave in and now have the craziest Tibetan Terrier who has stolen my heart. However, I have now said that I will never have another puppy as getting down on my knees is a killer and it is much harder than when I was more agile.
There are loads of breeds I love but consider unsuitable for me to keep. I tend to lean towards the larger breeds, the Great Dane is a lovely breed. I love the working Collies and have a real soft spot for Cavalier King Charles Spaniels too. I have met some amazing Cavapoos and Heinz 57's too. For me it is about personality so it is more about the individual dog really.
WWM, that is really good news. I am relieved for you.

MawtheMerrier Mon 20-Mar-23 12:00:52

Oh 2420mags how very sad.
My lovely Hattie (only 5) -here- had to be PTS 2 years ago and because of lockdown regs I was not allowed to be with her, I had to hand her over in the car park- fortunately not knowing this was to be goodbye or I not have got home intact, but I felt I had betrayed the promise that I have made to all the dogs in my life (6 now) namely that they would go to sleep in the arms of the person who loved them best and whom they trusted to do their best for them.
That was a dreadful day. sad
