Emergency Vets

Had the misfortune to call one yesterday. The emergency cover vet practice is linked to our usual vet and they have complete coverage of our area. Told when I phoned that the consultation fee is £300, then had to have a conscious x-ray £200. Now you may think that the bill would be £500 but it was nearer £600 because of extras. Claiming through the insurance and all seems to be well, fingers crossed. However there were a several pets more poorly and the fees were ranging between £1000 and £2500. These people did not have insurance and didn't have the money either, they were obviously upset. I'm just really flagging it up that if you have a pet and find yourself in these circumstances the vets fees can be huge. I know there was an earlier post about Pet Insurance so might be worth bearing in mind. Having said that this was the first time in 13 years that we had needed out of hours vet advice but its a risk you take without insurance.

It is for these sorts of reasons that I have never had a pet since I left my parents house. A pet, just like a child, is a responsibility I do not seek.

But the rewards are more than worth it!

Our vet practice, several years ago, was taken over by Medivet. Since then the cost of visiting a vet has increased massively. Having said that, my little cat (now 16) has had more than my money's worth out of Tesco pet insurance.

My two dogs are my biggest expense. The young lab has 3 training sessions a week - huge expense but he’s becoming a Good Lad at last. Every dog I’ve shared my life with has taught me skills I didn’t know I needed. life enriching and enhancing

This is so sad because the people who need company and are good owners are often older or unemployed. I got caught in the same racket , my cat was very I’ll and quoted 1600 bill for him for a stomach op. I contacted the Pdsa and because I was on tax credits at the time they said they would do it for 906.00. If I hadn’t been working I would have got it free. He is fine now but I took out insurance however they will not cover any digestive related problems. My two other cats have no insurance , I just have to hope for the best. My sympathy to anyone who is poor and has a pet
