He became my step’cat when I met DP 10 years ago, but I feel really sad sad
He was 18 and had a lovely life and was very loved so I must focus on that.
We kept putting off the inevitable but he was losing weight rapidly and had dementia, and we just knew it was time.
The vet was so lovely, kind and respectful, and we brought him home and DP buried him in the garden overlooking the fields.
I keep looking at the empty space where he used to lie and welling up.
We still have his brother and my cat but the house still feels empty without him sad

I’m so very sorry, I really am thanks ♥️

I’m so very sorry. Yes, I know that feeling of the house seeming empty. You have done the right thing, and you knew when the time was right. He was and always will be loved. In time you will find comfort in knowing that. 💐

It’s very sad, isn’t it ? I went through with my beautiful, sweet Rottweiller. She used to have a bell round her neck and I swear, I heard that tinkle for weeks after she passed. However, my vet was very disrespectful. I wanted her to die in her own home, with all of us around her so I got the Vet to come over. He and his assistant, came, gave her the needle and after she died, they bundled her and just threw her into the van. They were laughing and joking on their way out. It’s put me off Vets completely 😡

Their presence stays for long after they’ve gone. They’re with us all the time so the gap they leave is very real. I used to hear my last dog shaking her head long after she’d gone: she had a floppy ear and always shook her head when she woke up. Let the tears flow: they’re healing. And still talk to him.

I'm so sorry, it's hard to say goodbye to a beloved pet. I'm pleased that your Vet was so kind.
I went through the same experience with my little parson Russell terrier. She was 18, deaf and had doggie dementia. Went off her food and looked so miserable. I made the decision to have her put to sleep and the vet was in complete agreement. She died in my arms in the treatment room. I left her with the vet to have her cremated. I miss her still, and it's been six years without her. We have a cat now, but it's not the same.

A huge loss Flaxseed, you did what was necessary although it broke your heart. Remember with love the affection he gave you and your DP

think of him often and smile .

So sorry, lost one of my dogs very recently and I know how much it hurts xx

Hithere Wed 31-May-23 16:28:35

So sorry

You know you did the best for him and he thanks you and loves you

TwiceAsNice Wed 31-May-23 16:46:05

So sorry for you . My cat had an operation in March and as she has a heart murmur there was a real risk she would die in theatre. It was the longest day waiting to hear and I was so thankful to keep her. My heart goes out to you I hope it consoles you to know that she was loved so much

buffyfly9 Wed 31-May-23 16:53:28

I'm so sorry to hear that, I know just how you feel, our lovely cat is now 18 and has lost weight though she eats like a horse, has a bit of dementia too. She loves sleeping in the sun in her favourite part of the garden so for now we are making her life as lovely as possible. You have given your cat a lovely life and a peaceful pain free end, it was the right thing to do, you just know don't you. Thinking of you.

Flaxseed Wed 31-May-23 16:55:24

Thanks for your beautiful messages. thanks
I have had to have pets pts a few times in the past unfortunately and I know we go forward with the lovely memories.

The poor old boy used to really wail in the cat basket going to the vets, but today he didn’t. Maybe he knew it was time too sad

CrazyH that is beyond awful. Every vet I have used to euthanise pets has been so kind.
DP did ring up a mobile vet yesterday so that he wouldn’t have the stress of the journey, but didn’t like his attitude and lack of compassion, so there are obviously vets like that around here too. angry

Thankfully we haven’t had the experience of a bad one. I’m so sorry that you did.

Sorry for your loss flowers. Having been through that several times, I know how you must be feeling. Our lovely boy died last October (in 43 years, this is the longest time we've been without a cat). You did the right thing, your boy had been suffering. x

Sparklefizz Wed 31-May-23 17:10:39

Flaxseed I'm so sorry to read this. flowers It's such a hard decision to have to make but know that you did the right thing for him. He will live on in your memories. I have a "kitty corner" in my house with photos of each of my cats from the past, and I love to look at them.

Remember the joy he gave you. Sending you a hug. x

Our beautiful cat passed away recently unexpectedly and he was 12. We were so upset and still are. I’ve still got all his food, blankets, scratch post and can’t think of getting rid of them all. Every day, I expect to see him sitting by his bowl in the kitchen and he isn’t there. It is very hard.
My sympathies are with the OP.

PoppyFlower Wed 31-May-23 17:27:20

I'm so sorry for your loss.

SueDonim Wed 31-May-23 17:38:55

That’s just so sad. I’m sorry, Flaxseed. flowers

We lost one of our Boys two years ago and the other last November. I still expect to be greeted by them when I come home.

sodapop Wed 31-May-23 17:42:33

So sorry Flaxseed your boy has a special place in your heart that's reserved for our pets.
You did the most loving thing you could for him in the end. thanks

Joseann Wed 31-May-23 17:42:36

Sad times. They are auch a big part of our lives. flowers

Calipso Wed 31-May-23 17:52:24

Flaxseed I'm so sorry flowers

and CrazyH I'm so sad about your experience, that should never happen. When our daughter's cat was put to sleep here at our house, after a few days the practice sent her a sympathy card with a lovely message. That was a lovely touch.

We're facing a similar prospect in the not too distant future with our almost 19 year old tabby girl. She's currently doing well on palliative steroids so I'm hopeful she can enjoy one last summer's sunshine 🌈

Flaxseed Wed 31-May-23 17:54:45

You are all so kind.

Poor boy had long claws because he wasn’t going out much to keep them short. He walked round constantly and aimlessly and there’s now a silence where the constant noise of those claws on the laminate once were sad
Bless him.

Flaxseed Wed 31-May-23 17:57:23

I found a lovely Thank You card with a rainbow on this afternoon. I will be sending that to the vet to thank him
for his compassion smile

Flaxseed Wed 31-May-23 17:58:49

Calipso I hope she can too. They love the sunshine don’t they? ❤️

Aveline Wed 31-May-23 18:12:20

A sad day for you and the family (including your other cats). ❤️

Oldbat1 Wed 31-May-23 18:40:34

A very sad time. Im so sorry.
