Look what they’ve done to my girl 😢

My beautiful baby had her operation yesterday and she’s really suffering, they must have pumped her full of drugs because she can’t have any more until 1 o’clock and she’s hallucinating. I could hear her crying in the night - it’s breaking my heart poor girl.

Germanshepherdsmum I do not have to explain myself to you, as I have said you do not know my circumstances.
Please do not turn a thread that is about my pets operation into a character assassination.
Thank you everyone else for your kind words it is very much appreciated.

If your circumstances prevent you from paying for your dog’s operation and being with her on the night after the operation, when she will have been confused and in pain, I question whether you should have a dog.

That’s harsh GSM!

High horse time again. For goodness sake, climb off it before you injure yourself. How unkind you are to the OP and so very judgemental of her.

I feel only for her dog, having had one who underwent the same procedure and knowing how she was on that first night. If that’s harsh or judgmental, so be it.

Wonderful dog who will soon bounce back, I would sleep next to her if I could, but there might be a reason you can't , one thing for sure you love her and she knows that. I think it's harder on you in a way, she doesn't know what's going on with the meds, but you do.💐

I am concerned about her nibbling/scratching the stitches... I'm sure they will get itchy.
It's impossible to watch them for every minute.

🤞 she has a speedy recovery.

I hope your lovely girl is over the worst now.

When my dogs went to the vet for an operation in London, I was always recommended the "superior" more expensive anaesthetic because the dog would be less traumatised afterwards and it mixed better with other drugs. I've never been offered that elsewhere, but I know one of our poor dogs was in a terrible state after a tiny op by a rural vet in France??

How about a smaller ring for her neck our dog had one it was soft and small like a child’s inflatable swim ring.

Elless Sat 17-Feb-24 10:49:43

That's a great idea Redhead, fortunately she hasn't touched her wound but I will remember that. Got up this morning and my girl is much better. It's great to be able to get good advice and reassurance from friendly people 🙂.

I'm glad she's much better this morning Elless it never ceases to amaze me how much they can improve in 24 hours.

Thanks for letting us know.

That’s good news Elless for you and for your lovely girl.

So pleased to hear that she's much better this morning, our dog was fine the day after too. Just a word of advice - I felt so sorry for our dog that I too took off the cone. I watched her diligently and never once saw her trying to lick her wound. However when I took her to the vet for her follow up appointment the vet said that she had been licking it, so obviously she must have been doing it during the night. Try and get some kind of cover on the wound (or a small soft 'ring') or she may very well try to lick when you're not there!

*soft ring on her neck, not the wound! 🙄

I hope your girl is improving with each day. When Finn had an operation on his leg, l got him a leg sleeve from MPS, he would never have tolerated a cone. They are around £20.00.
Really worked well as you canot watch them 24/7.
Beautiful girl, you can see she is very well loved, Elless, take care and l hope she is better soon.

Glad the op is over. Anaesthetics often cause whimpering as they come around. I must admit though i never leave a dog alone who has just had surgery. I used to take rescue dogs to be neutered for my local rescue centre and brought them home after surgery for their first night otherwise it would be back to a kennel. One night on the sofa wasnt a big inconvenience and the dogs concerned were not mine.

Ah it’s horrible when they’re poorly, post op etc. But it looks like you looked after her well (try and ignore the holier than thou person on here).

We also used an inflatable ring when ours went through an op, much easier to manage than a cone. Glad she’s much better today!

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear that. I hope for her full recovery.

Juliet27 Thu 21-Mar-24 06:42:30

Let’s hope she’s recovered as it’s over a month since her op!!

NotSpaghetti Thu 21-Mar-24 14:04:53

Yes, how is she now elless?

Elless Thu 21-Mar-24 20:41:48

She's doing well, really hard to keep her calm now because she must feel so much better and wants to play all the time. I've started taking her for small walks and she still limps some nights after her walk, it's hard to walk at her pace but I'm keeping her on the lead for now as advised by the vet. We've got her booked in for some hydrotherapy which I think she'll really enjoy, I will take some photos when she goes.

Thanks for the update!
Very pleased she's doing well.
