Wonderful news Sazz1. So pleased they’ve both made a full recovery. I know what it’s like to feel helpless when our dogs are poorly. 🐾🐾🐾🐾 💐

Very pleased to hear this good news Sazz1. We don’t have dogs anymore 😢 and the problem with sewage in rivers etc never occurred to me as regards dogs. You’ve done your absolute best for them so be kind to yourself.

Back to completely normal now except weight loss. Oldest one 7yrs lost over 2kgs and other 5yrs 1.5kgs. But tbf they were slightly overweight due to lack of exercise in the relentless torrential rain. We free feed, so both eating very well, and it's stopped raining here today so back to 2 x 1 hour runs a day.

I'm so glad to hear your dogs seeming the mend. What a nightmare for dog owners all this sewage run off must be.

I keep some chloramphenicol eye ointment in the fridge for eye problems. I’m always careful not to cross contaminate it.

Maybee, we all feel like this but are just human beings. My dog is getting old now and has had a funny eye and snapped at me yesterday when I cleaned it. It’s been weeping for days. Today it’s completely fine and she is happy again. But how are we to know everything? We are all compassionate dog owners on here too. Don’t blame yourself, you are a good owners xx

This is why I begged my vet to give me some. Cost me £80 mind you. However, as this problem seems to be chronic and not acute I think I’ll be claiming on her insurance. I was in the bath one Friday night just before the vets closed and my last dog came out in lumps having been stung by a lazy wasp. How I managed to get to the vets before they closed and was fully clothed is beyond me! The trouble with pets is that every problem you have you think, great, I’ll know how to either prevent that or deal with it in future. But the next problem is always a different one. Current dog developed a pyometra while we were away from home ( although that is something that I picked up on and acted on straight away thankfully).

She’s always ill when we’re away from home.

Very pleased to hear that your dogs are recovering. They’re like children sometimes - up one day and down the next!
Panacur is brilliant stuff as is Loxicom for inflammation and pain, along with Blue Spray for grazes and scrapes.

You haven’t let her down MayBee. A more caring and loving mum would be hard to imagine. She is in the best of hands - yours.

Poor doggies. We take ours up on the moor (Devon), and on Tuesday evening he wouldn't touch his dinner, and was off colour for the next 24 hours. He is a puddle drinker, muddy field water slurper, river swimmer, beach sniffer, all usually with no problems. The ground is a breeding ground for nasties at the moment because it is like a bog. I hope yours get better quickly like ours.

One dog does drink from puddles but the other never did until this time she copied.
It started with not eating for 2 days then D&V. V stopped after first dose of panacur with first dog but not the other one. It's severe D with both of them but sick once or twice a day now. They both seem bright and alert You wouldn't know there's anything wrong if you called in.

Glad to hear that both dogs are on the mend. It is such a worry when they’re poorly. Sod’s Law that it so often happens at the weekend and you’re left trying to find a vet.
Hills diet food is good if they’ll eat it, mine used to turn his nose up at it. It can be difficult to keep them out of puddles but you need to keep them on their leads for now.
Hopefully the rain will stop and the puddles will dry up.

If I hadn’t got the backup antibiotics I would have been at the vets as soon as they opened this morning! She’s always ill when we’re away from home. Having said that, I have more faith in the vets here than back home.

If only I knew what caused this initially. I’m usually quite good when my pets are poorly because they pick up on your feelings but today I just lost it. To see her running on the beach is wonderful; people stop and watch her. We used to have a specialist sighthound vet nearby but he left. I just feel that I’ve let her down and she doesn’t deserve it, she’s such a good girl.

Well, last night my dogs nail bed infection came back with a vengeance. I thought it was on the mend. Blood everywhere. I put her straight back on the antibiotics I’d persuaded my vet to prescribe but she was sick afterwards. I want to see the same vet I saw when it first happened which won’t be till Tuesday. However, if she continues to be sick it will be Monday morning.She’s back on gastrointestinal food. Hope it isn’t another sleepless night with her tonight. I’ve never let her do zoomies with other whippets for fear of injury so I can’t believe the poor thing is suffering from this. I couldn’t stop crying this morning but then she went to her toy basket and started playing with her tuggy toy and I was so relieved. If she can just keep her latest meal down I’ll be so relieved. She used to have bouts of diarrhoea when she was younger so I’ve always given her probiotics but being on antibiotics long term is going to trash her gut biome and immune system

I’m sure there’s a test for Giardia. It usually causes diahorrea and you have to take a sample to the vets. I’ve never heard of it being passed onto people. This wet weather is causing no end of problems. I think my dogs nail bed infection is a result of walking through muddy fields where cows have been. I’ll ask about Giardia.

I've had Giardia Lamblia and it's not very nice. Known in America as Beaver Fever apparently.

I would also recommend probiotics. they come in sachets for dogs from the vets.

One of my dogs, some years ago, had a bout of diarrhea which didn't clear up after 2 bouts of antibiotics. The vet specialised in large animals and so I tried another vet. When we went into the consulting room Flora farted. The vet asked whether she did that often. I said no and she gave the probiotics saying that I should see an improvement in 2 or 3 days. She star ted to get better the next day, Since then I've always given my dogs the powders if they've needed antibiotics.

Oh my, just caught up with this, what a worry but happy to hear they are on the mend. I usually have a can of Chappie in the cupboard for D & V episodes :/ oddly, as he is allergic to poultry he can tolerate this. I also give him a bit of mashed potato and steamed white fish - along with vet meds. My lad has been unwell recently and i have been giving him a bit of Bone Broth on his food that has helped build him back up/regain his appetite.

Glad dogs now on the mend.

My friend is a dog sitter. Recently She had 4 labs to look after and all 4 were very ill one after the other. These dogs had been swimming in the river - I suspect sewage discharge further upstream. They all required vet visit for anti sickness injections and given prokolin plus antibiotics. They all recovered but it was a concern. As someone further up said chicken doesn’t agree with all dogs and boiled rice is inflammatory. I give mine white fish cooked in water if they are ever poorly.

If you live near a river which has overflowed onto a nearby meadow, then receded, there will be sewage left behind in the puddles.
