Both dogs ill very worried

My dogs went for a run in a very muddy field, stood in a deep puddle and drank the filthy water. They now both have severe D&V. Saw the vet who prescribed Panacur incase it's Guiardia. But one dog has done this before and tablets were given which stopped it in 24 hours. It's been 5 days now since treatment and no improvement. I just feel so worried about this as vet says we could catch it. Daughter and DGD wanted to come and stay for a week but I've told them no incase they catch it. Going back to vet tomorrow to try and get the tablets. Been up in the night to let them out every night. Anyone else had this with their dog? Any advice?

Catching it myself would be the least of my worries. Are your dogs fully vaccinated, including against leptospirosis (rat jaundice)? I would be taking my dogs back to the vet immediately - ie today.

I’m sure there’s a test for Giardia. It usually causes diahorrea and you have to take a sample to the vets. I’ve never heard of it being passed onto people. This wet weather is causing no end of problems. I think my dogs nail bed infection is a result of walking through muddy fields where cows have been. I’ll ask about Giardia.

Going off on a tangent slightly but there was an article on the news just last night. Apparently, Alabama Rot is on the increase in the UK and this is makes dogs very poorly.
I don't have my own dog but my AC does and also a few of my friends - I hope your dogs get better soon sazz.

They are both fully vaccinated including Lepto 4. and KC. We are giving them small portions of cooked chicken or hard boiled egg with boiled rice as per vet instruction. Last dose of panacur is today so will go tomorrow if no improvement overnight. Vet said we can definitely catch it so being very careful. It started 2 days after drinking the dirty water.

Just googled it and it is transmissible to humans and can hang around for a long time. Are you giving them probiotics eg Pro kolin? I’d switch to Royal Canin gastrointestinal food for a while, too. I always keep some in stock if my dogs been poorly: I buy it from Pet drugs online. I’d phone the vet and ask if they can do test because if it’s negative at least you won’t have to continue to clean everything for a long time. You can buy Panacur from some chemists: when my dog kept getting tummy trouble when she was young I wormed my dog with it instead of mile max ( I did own up to my vet when I spoke to her).

Poor doggies. We take ours up on the moor (Devon), and on Tuesday evening he wouldn't touch his dinner, and was off colour for the next 24 hours. He is a puddle drinker, muddy field water slurper, river swimmer, beach sniffer, all usually with no problems. The ground is a breeding ground for nasties at the moment because it is like a bog. I hope yours get better quickly like ours.

One dog does drink from puddles but the other never did until this time she copied.
It started with not eating for 2 days then D&V. V stopped after first dose of panacur with first dog but not the other one. It's severe D with both of them but sick once or twice a day now. They both seem bright and alert You wouldn't know there's anything wrong if you called in.

It was a field near Exeter

That's worrying sazz1 I think I would have a return visit to the vet now. You are right to tell your daughter & Granddaughter not to visit at present. I love my dogs dearly but would always put children first.
Fingers crossed your dogs recover soon.

There are so many huge puddles near where I live and lots of dogs. I hope your dogs are better soon. It must be very worrying.

I saw the news about a disease called Alabama Rot, recently come to this country. It is caught in muddy fields , ponds long grass. Oleas

Shelflife Fri 05-Apr-24 16:17:25

Too soon!
Please go to your vet immediately and mention Alabama Rot!?
I don't have a dog bug in your situation I would be very worried indeed. Good luck and keep us posted.

Eloethan Fri 05-Apr-24 16:23:33

*sazzl". I am so sorry to hear about your dogs. I know how gut-wrenchingly worrying it is when your pets are ill. I do hope they will recover.

Dogs suffering from Alabama Rot apparently have many skin lesions so hopefully it isn't that.

Smileless2012 Fri 05-Apr-24 16:24:30

We had both our dogs at the vets yesterday sazzl both with rather bad gut bacterial infections resulting in colitis symptoms.

An antibiotic injection each and starting oral medication has improved them already. I agree with those who say you need to see your vet asap I don't want to worry you but no improvement in 5 days is concerning.

Please keep us up dated.

Yes, I saw that, wasn't paying full attention as we don't have dogs now but it sounded very worrying.

I hope the vet can diagnose this with a test and they improve, sazz so your family can still come to stay later in the week.

I hope they improve soon xx

I've checked the Alabama Rot reported cases and there have been none logged in the EX postcode since 2021. This does not mean that it can't suddenly happen anytime, anywhere, but going by my friend's tragic experience, the symptoms don't sound the same in your dogs sazzl. I've just found her message at the time.
Polly then developed a limp. ......Her front paw soon ballooned to twice the size and eventually started oozing blood. Two days later Polly had stopped eating for a couple of days and was lethargic. She is obsessive about food so this should have been a sign. She was transferred to the vet hospital where she stayed over night. She did not respond to antibiotics. She was due to go to a hospital in Bristol for state of the art imaging and an operation to remove the obstruction last Monday. By this time the vet had begun further tests and diagnosed kidney problems and realised that she was a victim of Alabama foot rot. ....She was put to sleep last Saturday. Horrible horrible end. The information about this appalling condition is frustratingly vague. The incubation period can be a few hours to 14 days. We shall never be sure of the source of the infection. It seems about fifteen times as many dogs are killed through road accidents which highlights how rare it is. It is some kind of bacteria associated with more woody areas and an autumn and winter issue apparently. But it is all vague hearsay and because it is rare, little specific research has been undertaken and very little definitive knowledge exists.
If you are worried, sazzl, keep returning to your vet.

It's so worrying for you I give white fish as chicken doesn't suitvall dogs and give her fish water I'd she won't drink The vet suggested this . Hope they will be well soon (

Esmay Sat 06-Apr-24 07:10:15

I agree with you - your daughter should delay her visit .
I've had dogs with severe diarrhoea and vomiting and have sat up all night with them in the bathroom with newspaper all over the floor .
I nearly lost a puppy - it was touch and go with her for days .
My vet recommended melted ice cream and drops of water in tiny amounts !
It worked for my girls
After injections of antibiotics they improved - but couldn't tolerate their normal food .
I bought them Hills specialised diet food.
I don't know if it's still available .
If your dogs love puddles and most do it's an on-going problem .
I think that I'd walk them in a drier area if possible .

How are the poor dogs this morning?

Joseann Sat 06-Apr-24 08:20:26

Hope there is some improvement in the poorlies' condition.

Katie59 Sat 06-Apr-24 09:22:30

There are all sorts of diseases you can catch from dirty water, and if the dogs live with you in the house you ARE vulnerable.

I would not have visitors until it is cleared up and be very careful with hygiene yourself too, when all clear, clean the whole house, shampoo carpets and soft furnishings etc.

Smileless2012 Sat 06-Apr-24 09:25:09

I hope you'll have time to pop on and let us know how your dogs are this morning sazzl.

As you have seen the vet Alabama Footrot is very unlikely. I would go back to the vet however if the D&V continues. It’s important to make sure the dogs don’t get dehydrated but I wouldn’t give them too much to eat. Liquid bone broth is good. I’m not too sure about rice as they could have a grain allergy. Have you tried sweet potato and perhaps a little scrambled egg if they are not intolerant to eggs?

BTW it is important dogs don’t drink from puddles in the road as they could contain anti freeze which can be lethal.
