I'm just watching this, anyone else ?
I love dogs . They're choosing a terrier to go through now .
Think it's like Crufts .

I did not, of course, say that every American is cruel to their dog nor that every British owner is perfect.

Precisely. But Americans need to realise that ear cutting cropping puppies ears is downright barbaric. Even Scooby Doo has cropped ears.

A shame your thread went arse over tip Nanato3
I didn’t see it but love those big Collies with tan and white long hair and narrow heads, always wanted one of those.

I've had 9 of these Collies Oreo
They come in 3 colours, Sable and White which I think you mean , Tri colour and Blue Merle . I've had all 3 colours .
I've got 2 atm , A Sable and White and a Tri , both girls .
I love their long noses , they fit lovely in your hand grin

I was planning to get a short haired rough collie (if that makes sense) at one time. Not sure why I didn’t but it might have been when I switched to whippets. I’m not very good at grooming: always start off with good intentions but let them slip.

The short haired Collie is called the Smooth Collie .
The Smooth is a bit more energetic than the Rough but lovely dogs . It's harder to get a Smooth as not so many are bred .

From the thread title I honestly thought this was going to be about a competition to find America's biggest dog

It means it's the biggest dog show they film , like Crufts
In the UK

Iam64 Sun 13-Apr-25 09:03:38

Ears are cropped to make the dog look fierce

Of course, we in the UK are far from perfect on the dog front, s every discussion on gransnet confirms.

Like ViceVersa I’ve been surprised on American Labrador sites, at the casual use of e-collars, prong collars and acceptance of leaving these huge active people focussed dogs locked in crates for 8 hours because guess what, left alone for long periods, they find their own entertainment

Aveline Sun 13-Apr-25 08:49:02

Cropping ears? Why on earth do that?

flappergirl Sun 13-Apr-25 08:27:09

I love dogs and for that reason I don't watch professional dog shows. I don't trust the owners/breeders to have the best interests of the dogs at heart. Not when there are huge monetary prizes to be won along with advertising opportunities and of course an enormous amount of personal prestige. They aren't doing it for the dogs are they and the dogs don't have a choice in the matter.

I think that's what it was intended to be eddiecat.

And it should continue as intended.

Nanato3 Sun 13-Apr-25 01:32:27

Oh dear me, what have I started sad.
I love dogs and there were many beautiful dogs on the show .

I thought it would be a lighthearted thread confused

Macadia Sun 13-Apr-25 01:03:37

*lovely thread

(apparantly my fingers cant type on this stupid tiny keyboard on the phone. Whoever thought this was advanced technology !)

Macadia Sun 13-Apr-25 01:01:43

Nanato3 starte a lively thread and then watermeadow convinced most GNs to be biased and believe that ALL people in one nation are cruel to dogs and the other nation is not. What a lot of hogwash. That is how wars begin: the hatred brews when people erase individualism from individuals.

Ah, the USA, where they chop off dogs’ tails and ears for fashion. Where they believe long-discredited nonsense about training and use electric shock collars. Where it’s ok to shut a dog in a small cage all day and all night and feed dogs all their lives on dried food like a factory-farmed pig.

Lots of people in the UK only feed their dogs dried food and you make sweeping generalisations about how millions upon millions of US citizens treat their dogs.

We don't, however, allow the cropping of ears or tails or the use of shock and prong collars.

Docking of tails was allowed here.

Our first spaniel had had his tail docked; it was customary as long tails could get caught up when they were working and cause a painful injury.

Ears? What is the point of thst?

Oreo Sat 12-Apr-25 22:10:57

There are many bad things done in breeding dogs, to have big popping out eyes, to have pushed in noses so they can hardly breathe, to be too long in the spine and so on.It’s all pretty awful if you ask me and just as bad here as anywhere else bar the ear cropping.

Shock collars (and possibly prong collars) are not illegal in England, Scotland and NI. Well done Wales for outlawing them.

Come to that I see dogs chained up in small backyards here all day who drive neighbours mad with barking when their owners are at work.
Sure there are some bad practices like ear and tail cropping over the pond but any Rottweiler in the UK has a docked tail too.

Docked tails imo aren’t as bad as cropped ears as with some breeds there is a reason for it as the tails can get damaged and have to be removed when the dog is an adult which is a much worse operation. Having said that it can also cause incontinence so I’m glad it’s been banned here. But there is no justification in cropping the ears of a small puppy. In America they seem to think it makes the dogs more attractive.

Oreo Sat 12-Apr-25 22:04:04

I don’t think the UK has anything to be proud of in that we have uncontrolled dogs roaming about with useless owners, dangerous dogs the size of lions still around with the said useless owners either treating them as weapons or swearing blind that their vicious XL is really a sweetheart.

Oreo Sat 12-Apr-25 21:59:26

I know it’s illegal here but it happens and have never seen a Rottweiler or Boxer with a tail where I live.
Also many dogs get their tails docked legally here if you can prove it’s a working dog.Still cruel to the dog, working or not.
