'B' has divided the country, but families too ...

on a EU remain site for expats in the EU - so many young people and families saying they do not intend to visit parents in the UK in the future, and no longer wish to invite them to come and stay with them in EU - as they are so upset and shocked at their parents hard Brexit and anti EU/immigration stance- and just cannot face spending time with them. How sad. I didn't always agree with my parents, and do not always agree with DDs- but that would break my heart.

'My three year old DGS has been on 3 People’s Marches in his three short years and there is no way his parents would have contemplated putting him at any risk.
Infinitely more violence in the recent pro- Brexit march and no one in their right minds would have gone within miles of that'...these were people travelling home after the march and they were beaten up because they were wearing pro EU t shirts. I've been on 2 Peoples Vote marches and the only trouble I had was abuse hurled at me when I arrived in London 'you lost; get over it'. sad. I did, however, cover up my pro EU clothing when I travelled home.

"What condescending tripe Alexa"

My reasons for voting Remain are better than my reasons for voting Leave.

Alexa Tue 04-Jun-19 17:57:05

"There are plenty of Remainers who respect those who chose to vote Leave and also accepted the result of the referendum from the time it was announced."

Mmmm. I don't know if I could MOnica. However hard i try I do condescend to them at those times when a serious conversation is not possible like at a debilitated lager party in the Golf Club.

varian Tue 04-Jun-19 19:21:53

Perhaps we did "respect the results of the referendum" at the time. Since then we have learned a great deal about this fraudulent referendum - foreign interference, illegal spending, the influence of those who certainly do not have this country's best interests at heart, lies, lies and more lies and so I, for one, do not respect the result of this high-jacking of our precious democracy.

Callistemon Tue 04-Jun-19 19:31:03

a debilitated lager party in the Golf Club.
people can lose their inhibitions when inebriated Alexa

That sounds much posher than 'pissed down the pub' doesn't it!

Callistemon Tue 04-Jun-19 19:33:12

I am disadvantaged that I have not so far understood any reason to vote for the Brexit Party.
Why should anyone who voted leave have voted for the Brexit party necessarily?

Parliament voted to trigger Article 50 and there were very few MPs of all parties who voted against it. A list of them has been posted on here on many other threads.

Callistemon Tue 04-Jun-19 19:36:48

^ but we are not repeat not experiencing “exactly the same situation “as Germany in the 30’s. Not by a long way.^
Thank goodness we are not, but I dread to think what would happen if the Labour party do not get a grip on the Semitism within the party and then win power.
That is frightening.

Callistemon Tue 04-Jun-19 19:37:13

anti-Semitism of course, apologies.

quizqueen Tue 04-Jun-19 19:37:34

It is not Brexit which is splitting up families, it is the families' own attitudes to each other over their personal choices. If it wasn't Brexit, it would be something else which gives people an excuse to behave in an obnoxious way to others.

Kapitan Tue 04-Jun-19 19:39:25

"on a EU remain site for expats in the EU". Says it all. A site for pro remain trolls.

MawBroonsback Tue 04-Jun-19 19:40:21

You need to use a different form of public transport Labaik
The Victoria line back to Walthamstow was absolutely fine.

M0nica Tue 04-Jun-19 19:41:11

I still believe we should respect the result of the referendum. I have little doubt that a second one would go the same way, and if it didn't I think that those who voted leave first time would feel deeply betrayed and it could deeply undermine further an already very precarious democracy.

Democracy is not a precision instrument it is rough and ready tool and we have to take the rough with the smooth.

Callistemon Tue 04-Jun-19 19:50:42

People who have LibDem posters on their houses are getting paint thrown over the house/car etc. People going on Peoples Vote marches are beaten up on the way home etc. How can anyone not be concerned that this is happening in this country?

I haven't heard any reports of this but perhaps I live in a more tolerant area than you Laibak.

Where is this happening for goodness' sake?

I see that a centre left party is predicted to take power in Denmark this week. The country that's always been held up as a beacon of harmonious immigration. It appears that they are going to win on a ticket of immigration.
One plan of their new immigration policy will be to send all non European asylum seekers to a detention centre in North Africa.
Words from their new would be leader.
^ you are not a bad person just because you are worried about immigration. For me, it's becoming increasingly clear that the price of unregulated globerlisation, mass immigration, the free movement of labour is paid for by the lower classes^
This from a very liberal country.

Labaik Tue 04-Jun-19 20:33:23

Isn't there a difference between immigration and the taking in of refugees. Has Brexit [or the Brexit campaign] blurred the lines somewhat?

Remainer properties targeted in spate of vandalism attacks

Vandals have targeted pro-Remain homes, cars and offices with smashed windows, thrown paint, and "traitor" daubed on walls in a spate of attacks around the EU elections.

Bright red paint was thrown at the windows and signage of the Liberal Democrat offices in Hailsham, East Sussex, the day before the elections.
Former councillor and building trustee Steve Murphy is overseeing the cleanup. "If you wanted to vent your spleen I suppose ... but why carry a bucket of red lead paint?" he said.
"It ain't going to wash off," he added. "It'll take turps."

The office windows had also been smashed two weeks earlier, although Murphy acknowledged that this may not have been political as numerous nearby places had also been vandalised.

The community has rallied around the Hailsham Lib Dems, with one anonymous well-wisher taping a letter to their front door saying "it says nothing about you and everything about them", and congratulating the party on their success in the EU elections.
It is not a lone incident. In Wiltshire, safety and environmental manager and Remain supporter Pete Creese found a week after the elections that cream emulsion had been thrown over his car, as well as the EU flag displayed outside his home in the quiet village of Beanacre.
"I thought rather a large bird had done something on the window, and then I saw the flag covered in paint," said Pete, who has reported it to the police.
"The thing that struck me was - somebody might see the flag and object to it but why go away and get paint?

"Why should people be able to intimidate me?
"I don't condone throwing milkshakes but it's a different thing," he added.

Sussex police are also investigating two attacks made soon after the elections in Lewes.
Two houses displaying Lib Dem posters had their windows put through with bricks in the early hours of the morning.
Sussex police told the New European that the attacks "appear to be linked to political campaigning posters on display".
According to local paper the Argus, a nearby house displaying EU flags had recently been spray painted with the word "traitor".
Edwina Livesey, whose windows were smashed, told the paper: "This is a hate crime."
"They were targeting us because of our political views.
"It wasn't just some drunken behaviour, the brick they used came from somewhere else, it wasn't just picked up in the street.
"They are deliberately targeting."

You know what?
There are political threads and there are political threads.
I would have thought that we have had more than enough opportunity to say all there is to be said without fanning the flames of dissension to keep them warm. I am seeing the same abuse rehashed more often than a Sunday roast destined to feed the family for a fortnight.
And I am not discriminating as to whether it is Leave ▶️Remain opinions or Remain ▶️Leave factions.
In best ‘Enders-speak “Give it a rest!”

Labaik Wed 05-Jun-19 19:30:42

In a word. No I won't...you pointed out that there wasn't any political abuse of people in your world and I was just replying to what you said. It took me quite a while to find the article I was looking for and I didn't have time to ask your permission to post it before I did so....

jura2 Wed 05-Jun-19 19:36:53

Not a pleasant post Maw- a pity. If you don't want to hear or read about it, your prerogative, just keep away from such threads which are clearly about Brexit. Simples, no?

MawBroonsback Wed 05-Jun-19 19:38:39

Don’t be silly.

How much pleasure has it given you, I wonder to rake up dirt on whichever side.

But it is not just you I have in mind, but the whole tenor of the thread as I suspect the original post intended.

MawBroonsback Wed 05-Jun-19 19:40:22

I will happily leave both sides to continue to behave like a terrier at a rabbit hole, but looked in from time to time to see whether anything original might be worth reading.

MawBroonsback Wed 05-Jun-19 19:43:58

Should this not be under Politics anyway, relationships are only tangentially relevant and as a matter of opinion.

Labaik Wed 05-Jun-19 19:48:13

Well, maybe you shouldn't have ridiculed my post 4/6/19 16:49 I'm tired of people saying that some things aren't happening when they clearly are...

MawBroonsback Wed 05-Jun-19 19:52:35

shockyawn

I merely commented on my own observations. My prerogative.

Callistemon Wed 05-Jun-19 19:53:27

Ah - Wiltshire!
And it took some time to find the article about this vandalism?

So it was not nationwide, then.
Could it be the same person who has been vandalising parks in Wiltshire with paint?

Not the same snarling mob who attacked a Trump/Brexit supporter in London yesterday though!

There are vile people at each end of the political divide.
