My DS says I'm old and eccentric

My DS has been to visit me this weekend, DiL being away working.
The weather is really cold and I'm wearing a thermal vest, cotton roll-neck and a really thick cardie. also thick socks and tights under a warm skirt. The central heating is on and I'm not cold.
DS arrived wearing a t-shirt and a thin jumper more suitable imo for a warmish day in April. I have still got one jumper which belonged to his father, my deceased DH, which I offered him but he declined.
He said I should be heating the house more and that it would "make me happier" if I did.
I said that I was fine with the heating, plus gas fir if required, since I do wear suitable clothes for the season.
He said "Mummy, you are old and eccentric."
In truth, I think he's the eccentric one.

I am wearing four layers. I have the heating on 8 hours per day or a bit more in the current cold snap, and my gas and electricity bills are over £300 per month. I'm still not very warm a lot of the time.
For those that think it is eccentric to wear a lot of clothes, how much do you pay in fuel?

Romola Your DS has more money than sense, if he can afford the heating bills that dressing as you describe would require.

Perhaps he could offer to pay some of your fuel bills.

Routinely this winter I'm wearing a vest, a long sleeved tee, a tunic top and a warm cardi. With jeans on top of leggings and good socks plus warm slippers. We have the heating on for a while in mornings & evenings, as needed. Nothing eccentric about this; it's plain good sense, as far as I can see!

I'm glad to see that I dress as most on here, with several layers. Our heating is set at 20°, and nudged up if we feel chilly. We are both over 80, and so not very active if there is nothing that needs doing.

For me and my cold feet, the best thing is wool socks (not cotton). If my feet and hands are warm I feel the chill less.

Another way to stay warm is burning dry wood. We have wood all over our property, cut, stack, wait for the moisture to dry out.

The best thing for cold legs and feet in the evenings is a heat pad and a couple of cushions. You will feet warm as toast while watching TV. Just look on Amazon under 'heat pads'.

My brother would never wear a coat - any night out would see him and his mates setting out in t shirts in deepest winter.

He wore a short sleeve shirt to work in winter too. Until he went to work in NY, and his employer told him to wear a coat as he was being too unusual and worrying his colleagues.

He is the eccentric one to expect to wear a t-shirt indoors in winter..

Many of us are happy to have lived to be ‘ old ‘.

Sarkyspice61 Mon 23-Jan-23 12:14:11

Do people still think it appropriate to wear tee shirts in winter and blast the heating instead of wrapping up warm? Given the climate change crisis, not to mention the cost. I can sometimes understand why youngsters blame us boomers for the state of the planet.

Celebrate! Nothing better than to be labled old and eccentric, if you can add in some ’disgraceful’ you’ll be a treasure!

Old and eccentric is much more fun than being young and boring.

My best buy this winter has been my fluffy fleece jacket from Uniglo. I wear it in the house over a thermal vest and I can keep the heating off till the evening.

I am too, apparently! I can imagine you are. Modern youth is used to heated rooms everywhere and males have much higher energy release to keep warm (and so eat more,) than females (also true of many mammals). We also need more insulation as we get older, eat less and release less heat so we cool off more quickly. Suggest he reconsiders when he reaches his 8th decade.

I don’t see the point in paying for expensive heating if you’re not fully dressed. Different with children but I only turn mine on for 3-4 hours per day.

Eccentric is a complement as far as I'm concerned. We have the CH set at 20 but it's on for 3 hours in the morning and 3 in the evening and maybe a boost at lunch time if it's really cold. Then we have a log burner in the evening. We both wear 3 layers. Our DCs drip around in t-shirts but we still feel their houses are cold, we must have bred a hardy bunch.

I’ve also got several layers on, including an oodie. I’ve just given in and put the heating on for a short time. It’s 14 degrees in here and I’m feeling the cold.

Old is something we all hope to be and to be called eccentric is definitely a compliment.

My 93 year old dad has the heating on all day and sits most of the time in a thin polo top with maybe a fleece gilet over occasionally.
At home - now - my heating is off and I’m wearing fleece lined joggers, tank top under a m & s roll neck jumper and a very thick fleece zippy. Plus sheepskin slippers. I’ve been baking and the kitchen is cosy.
I can’t cope with his heat and he would hate my house.
I think I’m just being practical and would definitely consider being called eccentric as a compliment. Growing old very disgracefully etc etc 🤪

I am amazed at the number of men of all ages who have been out wearing shorts during the frosty weather, are they trying to prove something

When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go, and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick flowers in other people's gardens
And learn to spit.

You can wear terrible shirts and grow more fat
And eat three pounds of sausages at a go
Or only bread and pickle for a week
And hoard pens and pencils and beermats and things in boxes.

But now we must have clothes that keep us dry
And pay our rent and not swear in the street
And set a good example for the children.
We must have friends to dinner and read the papers.

But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

Should have told him, be careful, you are talking to the manufacturer…

senryu Mon 23-Jan-23 12:47:00

Wear what you like!

Sallywally1 Mon 23-Jan-23 12:53:26

In any case some people feel the cold more than others. I always seem to be cold nowadays. I have a thermal top on with jeans and a cardigan and thermal socks and feel warm enough. Heating is on low. In the evening we sometimes put on the gas fire which I love, but other half is always complaining that this is too hot! However he does go out in a very eccentric (in my view) ski jacket, great for the slopes, but ordinary wear? It has an enormous hood which looks strange. But each to their own, each to their own…

polly123 Mon 23-Jan-23 13:01:43

What's wrong with 'eccentric'? At least it is interesting.
