Talking of being married in white, should you really have done it ( if you did)?

I wore white and we had been living together for three years - don't care who knows it!

1960 I wore a short white dress I made myself and a veil over my face, two bridesmaids in lilac, I had to do what was expected by my mother.We certainly hadn’t lived together we hardly dared hold hands in front of my dad 😱

Same here. Then when we visited after our wedding my in-laws gave us their bed to sleep in.

My husband and I decided to wait until we were married, so I wore white. I thought that if we had children we could truthfully tell them that we had been virgins. Waste of time! They both lived with their partners before marriage, and it didn't worry me.
We divorced after about 30 pretty miserable years, so 'try before you buy' might have given a different outcome.¬

I wore a white wedding dress, although we'd been living together for a year. Being the only daughter, I wanted to please my parents (they paid for the dress too)

I must not have worded my post well enough. Had I wanted to know who were virgins when they married, I should have asked ‘ Were you a virgin when you married?’

My question was asked because someone seemed to object to Queen Camilla wearing white when she married ( even though she didn’t). White used to be symbol of purity, but obviously things have changed drastically now, with a couple’s children often attending lavish ‘white’ weddings.

I wore cream lace. It was far more flattering than white. None of your business lol!

Surely we,ve all left the “entitled towear white” stuff behind us .Thats where it belongs,I know a woman whose family disowned her because she got pregnant before she was married,I,d hate to think that attitude still survives even amongst older women who should know better.

I took the OP's question to be that most brides wore white & maybe a lot of us weren't virgins certainly once the pill was around & so the whole thing was bit "keeping up appearances" even back then.
I wore grey skirt & top & a chipper hat, for a church wedding in 86.

I wore white- a hospital theatre gown, with a drip and cage over. LOL

If we had not got married in hospital, I would not have worn white, as I was definitely not entitled to ;)

I was married in 1974 and I don’t recall anyone then still under the impression that a white dress was a sign of virginity. I certainly wasn’t, but we weren’t married in church and I didn’t want a trad. white dress anyway. My mother told me I’d regret it for ever more if I didn’t have one, but I never once have.

For anyone still to think that a white dress means bridal purity strikes me as an idea straight out of the ark! Or at any rate, certainly from before the 60s!

When my Granny was told I was getting married, she said, "I didn't even know she had a boyfriend!"
I asked where she thought I'd been living for the past year?

Only 4 allowed by doctors at our wedding, the day after a massive operation. Only our two witnesses. My parents were allowed to come in afterwards for a few minutes.

Yes white is a symbol of purity so when you ask those who wore white on their wedding day if they should have done it, and are not asking if they were a virgin on their wedding day, then what are you asking Daddima?

What about ivory? I think that's a symbol of purity too.

I was told by a vicar that white represents new beginnings.

I've no idea what the bible says about it.
