Christian University Society bans women speakers

I think there is some fear amongst all the churches because of the various scandals and falling attendances. I heard of a recent survey that found that 70% of 11-year olds did not believe in a god.
My own fear is that some disillusioned members of the main-stream churches might turn to the more extreme sects - I know the 'happy clappy' evangelical churches, many with preachers from Africa, are still attracting new members. I think the even the traditional C of E is preferable to sects that believe that the devil can be beaten or starved out of children.

Oh dear! angry Idiots!

I was aware that there was a C of E Church in Bristol that is a real hot bed of evangelicals. Christ Church Clifton!
As some else has said its probably the Christian "Taliban" pracher at work there.
It is quite terrifying.

Has the Taliban infiltrated the CU?

I found the best way was to get the top job and do it very well.

Isn't it fascinating that some women seem to 'allow' decisions like this to be implimented?

Get 6 single female students to agree on a policy of 'sod that for a game of soldiers'...that's all it would take. At every given opportunity, gathering, lecture, group discussion...whatever.....stand up with a sheet of interesting and relevant notes and start to TALK OVER the male speakers. Just keep doing it, over and over. If you're asked to stop, say you'd prefer not to and keep going. It would cause ructions! Just keep doing it, day after day.

Then whilst the 'think they're important' people are getting together to seek a solution, phone the local press, get them along to the next event that you plan to speak at and tell them you wont be cross if they send their report and photographs to the Daily Mail. Finally, everyone tweet like mad about it.

I'd give it 2 weeks max before the decision was reversed.

I read an article in the Economist. In Saudi they have now decided that women over 52 can be allowed out on their own without a male escort. And younger women if their male guardian has a permit.
The Saudi's and the CU should get together.

Agree, anno the CUs have always had a reputation for extremism. It's astonishing, isn't it, that people of that age should take an extreme position? I imagine if they don't fall into line, the university will apply pressure. Quite right, too.

annodomini Tue 04-Dec-12 19:35:38

As a student, I always knew that the CU was evangelical - going around asking people if they were 'saved' - but never quite so batty as this! Anyway, I thought that some, if not all, evangelical churches had women ministers.

1 Timothy 2:12 "But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence."

So there... this is what happens when people put their 'faith' in corrupt ancient scribblings...

And what about unmarried women, would three of them be considered equivalent to man and wife? In Sharia law two female witnesses equal one male witness.

Greatnan Tue 04-Dec-12 18:36:52

Take your pick - the synod on women bishops, the scout association, and in this case the people who made this daft decision.

MiceElf Tue 04-Dec-12 18:33:38

Who are 'they'?

absentgrana Tue 04-Dec-12 18:11:03

Yes Bags completely hysterically. Still doing it.

Mishap I hope not – that's my wedding anniversary.

Greatnan Tue 04-Dec-12 18:09:17

Looks a genuine account. They do keep shooting themselves in the foot, don't they?

JessM Tue 04-Dec-12 18:02:04

Does seem out there in the realms of the implausible.
How can the Student's Union allow this?

Mishap Tue 04-Dec-12 17:59:45

Could April 1st have crept up on us unawares?

Bags Tue 04-Dec-12 17:48:35

Hysterically?

absentgrana Tue 04-Dec-12 17:48:10

I can't stop laughing.

Bags Tue 04-Dec-12 17:45:14

Bristol University Christian Union has apparently banned women speakers unless they are with their husband!
