I am to be received into the Church during the Easter Vigil and have to choose a Saint's name for my confirmation. I have been looking through some websites but none have yet to find one that "speaks" to me. Do any of you have a favourite Saint?

How about Theresa as in Lisieux? Or Elizabeth of Hungary?
I wonder if you look at what sort of a person you are, you might find a "kindred" saint?
Good luck - my DH was received into the church 15 (I think) years ago at Easter and it was a very moving occasion.

St Clare of Assisi or you could follow the pope and use the feminine form of Frances.

I've always really admired Saint Hilda of Whitby. She was an English saint who ruled wisely and well over a double monastery of monks and nuns. She was, according to Bede, a skilled administrator and teacher, and ensured that the monastery was focussed on peace, study and charity. She was consulted by the rulers of the time but had great concern for ordinary people and encouraged and fostered the gifts of Caedmon the humble herder who became a poet.

St Bernedette Of Lourdes

Sorry about that. The site is playing silly b******.

The other saint you might like to think about is Margaret Clitherow. She was a mother and admired for her business sense, and during penal times, sheltered priests. When arrested and charged she refused to plead saying that as she had committed no offence, she had no need to plead, thus saving her family from giving evidence.

Abbess Hilda. Organised the synod of Whitby which determined that the English church would follow the roman way of dating Easter rather than the Celtic.

Or you could adopt the patron saint of your profession?

granniefinn Fri 22-Mar-13 14:41:31

Why not pick a name you like then find out if there is a saint with that name that but I do like Francess like the pope

sunseeker Fri 22-Mar-13 14:47:41

Thanks for all the suggestions - Galen is there a patron saint of legal executives smile

A friend has lent me a book listing the Saints by their days and I will now start working my way through it.

The priest did say he could make some suggestions but preferred me to find a Saint that would mean something to me.

MiceElf Fri 22-Mar-13 14:50:42

The patron saints of lawyers are St Thomas More and Saint Catherine of Alexandria.

gracesmum Fri 22-Mar-13 22:36:35

I believe St Jude is the patron saint of lost causes hmm

Galen Fri 22-Mar-13 22:49:40

He's my patron along with Luke and at the end of a tribunal ST Blaze!

Galen Fri 22-Mar-13 22:52:41

Yes St Raymond and our own St Thomas More!

Or according to another list Yves, presumably the femiminine is Yvette. I think I've seen his tomb on the n Brittany coast. Certainly a statue of him it was just before you turn the corner to go s to Brest!

Treguier! Horrible entrance. You have to do ferry and glide to access the berths.
How did I ever forget its name! Nice town though!

Galen Fri 22-Mar-13 23:10:41

iPad! Ferrymans glide!

I wanted to take Dymphna. She's the patron saint of those with mental conditions and it amused me (little did I know how apt it would become) but the Bishop wouldn't let me. So I chose Irene of Thessalonica because her day is my birthday.

vampirequeen Sat 23-Mar-13 14:14:53

My daughter took Thea. The Bishop asked if she was a real saint. My daughter said "Roman, virgin, brothel....need I say more." The Bishop stammered something about that sounding like a saint and that was it lol.

matson Sat 23-Mar-13 14:20:50

i choose st. philomena when i was confirmed, but that was 50 years ago and i,ve forgotten why i chose her ! x

Galen Sat 23-Mar-13 14:55:36

Isn't she a patroness of virgins?
