The Queen is meeting Pope Francis today in the Vatican. Wonder what they will have a chat about? Would quite like to be a fly on the wall. I am a lapsed catholic but have to say I am keeping half an eye on that Pope Francis, actually think he could be a good man!?

Perhaps they'll put out a joint "slap on the wrist" for the Mafia.

Hopefully she'll tell him to stop burying his head in the sand about child abuse. He was recently defending the church's record. See link.
Be even better if she went on to give him a lecture on equality for women - who better to do this. As head of a church that has women priests - who better?
In turn he could give her a few hints about PR (and the impact of being seen driving your own reasonably priced car in the confines of your own grounds)

The queen hasn't done a thing for equality of the sexes, since 1952 she has surrounded herself with men ,

When I got a teaching job in Northern Ireland in the early 80s (height of the troubles) in a fiercely Protestant school near Londonderry, I did the usual English teacher bit of asking the Y10 students to bring in the front page of a weekend newspaper. This was to look at the use of language, layout and so on.

It was the occasion of the Queen's first (I think) visit to the Vatican, and the main picture in all the papers was of her shaking hands with the Pope. There was a shout from one of the lads "Will you look at that bloody old traitor!" That was the Queen, of course.

I was very new to NI, and this was the beginning of my education!

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 03-Apr-14 18:46:13

OMG*Ariadne*! That was brave of you. (teaching in NI)

I think they'll reflect on some of the horrifically cruel events going on in the world today, and pray for us all.

Hasn't Christina de Kirchner already asked him to tackle HM about the Falklands?

JessM Thu 03-Apr-14 20:00:36

I dunno anniebach she seems to have gone all liberal on us recently. And I bet she is behind the change in the law on succession. Given her position, who would you want to succeed you to the throne. Mister airy fairy or his sister? Unfortunately the new law will not affect this, but a monarch can dream.

(the automatic blueing thing seems to have disappeared! Its a link about her speech to heads of commonwealth...)

JessM Thu 03-Apr-14 20:01:03

oh its an upgrade! it blued automatically. yippee.

Why hasn't she been forced to wear black and a veil as she has in the past? Is this a different kind of visit (maybe private rather than state) so she doesn't have to follow the absurd Vatican protocol? News stations here have got it all wrong again, describing the "head of the Church of England" meeting the "head of the Roman Catholic Church". Sloppy.

MiceElf Thu 03-Apr-14 20:50:35

Indeed. The head of the C of E and the head of the RCC is Jesus Christ. And although I'm no monarchist, I thought her maj looked very well. What a nonsense all these dress rules are. Glad to see the back of them.

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 03-Apr-14 22:17:52

But the queen is the Supreme Governor of the C of E. Surely that is the head?

And the Pope is Christ's representative on earth.

That's what I was taught anyway.

merlotgran Thu 03-Apr-14 22:27:13

I wonder if the Pope is tucking into his gift of 'Grandad's Chutney' grin

I think the Queen has lost a lot of weight.

rosequartz Thu 03-Apr-14 22:44:53

Yes, jings
The monarch is the Supreme Governor of the Church of England
The Pope is the Bishop of Rome, Vicar of Jesus Christ, supreme Pontiff of the Universal Church, etc.

Well that's what I was taught, perhaps official titles have changed?

rosequartz Thu 03-Apr-14 22:49:41

It doesn't mean he or she is the Head, though.
Just governor (HM) and Christ's representative (Pope).

jinglbellsfrocks Thu 03-Apr-14 22:54:29

I can't think of anyone else who would be over the reigning monarch. We are talking about the Christian church on earth.

Anne58 Fri 04-Apr-14 00:37:34

But they all still pee, poo and fart, no matter who they are.

I've lowered the tone, sorry, I'll get me coat.

Although I do think that this pope seems to be a decent chap so far, in comparison to some others.

absent Fri 04-Apr-14 03:32:24

jingl I thought you had Christian beliefs – yet you are suggesting that a mere mortal outranks the Son of God.

thatbags Fri 04-Apr-14 07:59:18

Seeming decent in comparison to some other popes would not be difficult, would it?

thatbags Fri 04-Apr-14 07:59:42

Same goes for British monarchs.

gillybob Fri 04-Apr-14 08:15:25

I absolutely love the "Orb" that was given to the queen for her great grandson Georgie Porgie. I can see him now playing catch with mummy on a blanket on the lawn............. Ouch grin

Anniebach Fri 04-Apr-14 09:24:08

The Pope is Pontiff of the worldwide RC Church , the queen is not supreme governor of the worldwide Anglican community

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 04-Apr-14 09:43:29

Absent, I'm sorry but your posts can be a little bit ridiculous. I was simply talking about the hierarchy of the Christian Church here on earth. hmm

thatbags Fri 04-Apr-14 09:44:41

annieb, who is? Genuine question.
