Cinemas have banned an advert for Christianity, seems The Lords Prayer could offend those of different faiths and of no faith, the secular society supports the ban.

As the majority are not Christian how can they agree or respect her Christian message ? I do think she will do far less of the Christian message though

In the 2011 Census for England and Wales, 59.3% of the usual resident population (33.2 million people) identified as Christian.

I imagine the Queen's Christian message, anniebach, will be on the lines of peace on earth and goodwill to men, which is the essential Christmas message. As a laid-back atheist I would have no difficulty in agreeing with it and respecting it, and the same would go for any comparable message from any religion. The message is more important than what it is wrapped up in.

Good response Grumppa. Reasoned thought.

Showing the Ad in cinemas could result in some very offensive language and behaviour from some present even leading to violence being the worst scenario.

Who remembers them playing the national anthem at the end of the film in the cinema and a mad rush for the door before it started. But once it started most people stood still. Different times.

Exactly, grumppa. The message of peace and goodwill is not owned by christianity either. Atheists believe in and respect all the good ideas in all religions. They just don't need faith in a god or gods to do it.

Anya Tue 24-Nov-15 08:07:47

That's right grumpa and it doesn't just apply to Christmas and Queen's speech either.

Elegran Tue 24-Nov-15 10:14:57

The queen's message always sounds very universal, and not just directed at ther christian subjects (or just her monarchist ones - she is head of state of the whole country, not just a christian royalist caliphate, or whatever the equivalent is)

I'm pretty sure I've seen party political films at the cinema and I know I see them endlessly [bored emoticon] on both ITV and BBC before an election.I don't think people of faith find other people of different faiths praying at all upsetting. I once worked in a multi-faith project where people regularly asked for or offered prayers for co-workers' concerns whatever their faith. However, I agree putting that film on might result in unfriendly loud responses. Anyone out there remember the stampede in cinemas at the first notes of the National Anthem?

thatbags Tue 24-Nov-15 11:36:17

Paul Blanchard in HuffPo reckons it's a PR stunt, pure and simple.

Lilygran Tue 24-Nov-15 11:36:51

Sorry, ajanela I missed your post!

Luckygirl Tue 24-Nov-15 11:42:00

Exactly grumppa.

I do remember the national anthem stampede! It became a sort of competition to see who could get out first.

No objection to the prayer; just object to it being foisted on people who have come to the cinema to watch a nice bit of slaughter and mayhem. grin

I am not a member of the Church of England but I ask in their defence,

How are they advertising their church? I hear no mention of ' join the C of E'

How is a PR stunt for the C of E when it is a prayer spoken in most Christian denomination?

It is a Christian prayer not a Church of England prayer , spoken by Catholics, Methodists, Baptists, JW's, Anglican Churches etc

Anniebach Tue 24-Nov-15 12:04:59

The queen has spoken of the birth in Bethlehem

janeainsworth Tue 24-Nov-15 13:15:39

Part of HM's job description is Defender of the Faith, ab.
It's not unreasonable for her to refer to it on Christmas Day. No one has to listen if they don't want to, but she always makes her message as inclusive as possible.

Anya Tue 24-Nov-15 13:22:03

So was it the Anglican version or the Catholic version that was banned Annie - there is a difference.

Anniebach Tue 24-Nov-15 13:25:01

Anya, Methodists, Baptists etc are not Anglican

Anya Tue 24-Nov-15 13:32:42

So what version was it of the Lords Prayer - that was the question.

Anya Tue 24-Nov-15 13:34:13

Which Christian version?

Anya Tue 24-Nov-15 13:37:04

Catholics use the Matthean (sp?) version but others (?) have a bit tagged onto the end.

Anniebach Tue 24-Nov-15 13:59:01

The Christian version used by Methodists , Baptists, Anglicans, Spiritualist Church, and the RC church with the exception of - for thine is the kingdom, Evangelican, JW's, Salvation Army

I can only give the churches of members I have worshipped with

I do not see this so called advert is a PR stunt by the C of E, I see it as a church reaching out to people in a time where fear and hatred is gripping the country . No church expects people filling the pews because they hear The Lords Prayer

I recall in a discussion on food banks and soup kitchens some said - why doesn't the churches do more, no matter they have been feeding the hungry for years . Now they are criticised for reaching out spiritually

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 24-Nov-15 14:03:41

I am totally confused about this talk of "versions". Why would anyone think a slight difference in wording, or length, would make any difference?

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 24-Nov-15 14:05:54

It's not a PR 'stunt'. Perhaps a 'reaching out'? You can't fault that really. It's just the time and place I question.

I am beginning to come round to the idea. Except for the cat-calling. But that might not happen.

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 24-Nov-15 14:06:52

ab you have already said that, haven't you? Sorry. smile

Anniebach Tue 24-Nov-15 14:21:11

Some churches leave out a word or two Jingle, the spiritualist church doesn't use - lead us not into temptation , but it's still The Lords Prayer

Cat calling and worse at the prayer doesn't bother me, as a Christian I accept Christ was jeered whilst being crucified.

No wish to upset the atheists here but Christ did say - remember, if the world hates you it hated me first .

This has given me the ability to take years of mocking on forums
