Granddaughter in Intensive Care

We got a call from our daughter just before coming to bed to say our six year old granddaughter is in hospital, for the second time in three months. We were able to see and speak to our granddaughter and she was on oxygen and antibiotics then, but she was finding breathing difficult. I’ve now just had a text to say she’s been moved to Intensive Care (she’s in NZ).

She had double pneumonia and a collapsed lung last time and although she became really very poorly she didn’t deteriorate anything like as quickly as she has done today. She has a compromised immune system having been born extremely prematurely and I’m concerned that the struggle to breathe may affect her heart.

So please, if you’re a pray-er would you pray for her? ?? She needs all the help she can get.

flowers from me too. I keep checking to see how she is. That sounds good news to me but I completely understand how you are feeling. You want her to be in the right place for the best treatment. All my good thoughts and wishes.

Still sending prayers and positive vibes ga.????
It must be so hard waiting for news.
I'm sure your phone never leaves your hand.

Hopefully every day that passes brings your dearest grandchild closer to recovery.

Hang on in there.??

UPDATE

Better news today is that the new treatment seems to be having an effect. ? ??

The pattern seems to be that it’s at nighttime that our granddaughter gets into real difficulties, but last night, although she did become hypoxic (not enough oxygen), it was not as bad as on other occasions.

The ICU is so busy they’ve had to put extra beds in and so our daughter says that if our granddaughter improves she’ll be moved back to a side ward again. On the one hand it’s really traumatic for her in the ICU, so I’d love for her to be well enough to be moved, but I really want her to stay there if she’s likely to need the extra facilities. Aaargh!

I can’t quite get my head around the fact that it’s possible for our granddaughter to be able to leave the ICU when she literally can’t breathe for herself, not even for a minute. I don’t want to ask my daughter too many questions as she’s ‘mummy’ and not an ICU nurse in this situation, but it’s a constant concern.

See this as positive news GA. When I was a nurse, it wasn’t uncommon to move patients to a high dependency area whilst still on oxygen. They won’t do this if it’s not safe. It’s probably the same in New Zealand, she may have to share a nurse with two or three others, but the care will be the same.

Still praying by the way?. Try not to worry.

???

Thank you so much everyone for your prayers and good wishes and Toad thank you for your reassurance.

The decision has been made that our granddaughter is staying in ICU for the time being. The doctor in charge said they wouldn’t be considering moving her if there were plenty of ICU beds available, so she can’t be moved just because there’s a shortage.

The good news is that she has had three saturations that were not as bad as previous ones, so the severity seems to be diminishing. I’m finally beginning to be really hopeful that the new medication is making a real difference. (Cautious smile)

UPDATE:
Good news ❤️‍? the new steroid treatment has worked and our granddaughter is now breathing independently! I had a FaceTime call from her this morning and it was like talking to a different child, she was alert, smiling and able to chat.

I also had an operation this morning and that went well too, so today is a red letter day!

I cannot say ‘thank you’ enough for all your prayers, good wishes and overwhelming messages of support during the past week. This kind of situation is where Gransnet really excels at providing a safe space for worries to be shared and I have appreciated it enormously.
