Who chose the Christmas stamps?

Not happy. angry
In a kingdom of great cathedrals, I'm not very impressed with the choice of Christmas stamps depicting various cathedrals.
Edinburgh - I'm not Scottish, I don't live there
Armagh - I'm not Irish, I don't live there either
Bangor - I'm not Welsh, I don't live there
Westminster - I'm a Londoner, but NOT Roman Catholic
Liverpool - I guess it will have to be that.

Where's Salisbury, Durham, Gloucester, Exeter, Canterbury, York?

Not to mention the cost!!!! £2.80 to send to anywhere since beginning of October. So from our perspective, the PO have shot themselves in the foot as we shall no longer be sending cards overseas at that outrageous price per stamp.

Why shouldn’t all the countries of British be represented?

valdavi Tue 05-Nov-24 19:20:01

Oh that's a shame! What a lovely subject for christmas stamps, our cathedrals are a wonderful legacy from past generations. Everyone has their favourites, but Salisbury, Gloucester, Durham, York, Ely shouldn't have been passed over I agree with Escaped.

A tiny bit puzzled as to why Bangor and not St David’s - he is the Patron Saint after all.

Elegran Tue 05-Nov-24 19:24:04

In Wales, Scotland and N. Ireland, people could also look at the English cathedrals on the stamps and say "I don't live there".

Why shouldn't the other countries in the UK - the UNITED KINGDOM - also be represented on the Christmas stamps they all will buy?

What is sauce for the goose is also sauce for the gander.

Good point.
Who knows why?

But they are quite attractive, I thought.
I like the designs, but agree the choice of cathedrals is odd.
Isn't it just 85 pence to post a card in UK?

NfkDumpling Tue 05-Nov-24 19:41:25

£1.65 first class and 85p second class isn't it? I quite like the designs - even if one of them isn't of Norwich Cathedral. But who's heard of Norwich, and why have one from the east of Britain?!

NotSpaghetti Tue 05-Nov-24 21:26:33

Here's a piece about the cathedrals:

I think it’s great that everyone is included, but as I stocked up before the price increase mine are just the boring ones.

blue25 Tue 05-Nov-24 21:40:35

They look great & I like that all the nations are represented. If you’re genuinely upset about this, you really need to keep your mind busy with more important things.

Casdon Tue 05-Nov-24 21:44:00

I think it’s good to have cathedrals from all over the UK - and not to feature the usual suspects, lovely though they are, but some lesser known ones. My favourite, which isn’t a cathedral, would be Bath Abbey, because I love the ladders of angels on the front.

Musicgirl Tue 05-Nov-24 22:00:35

I am as English as they come, but I think it is a good idea to have all four nations represented. However, I am surprised at the choice of Westminster Cathedral. I would have thought St. Paul’s might have been a more obvious choice. Of all the cathedrals in the country l love Norwich Cathedral the most. I am biased because I am originally from Norfolk, but it is a truly magnificent building. My other two favourites are Lichfield - the only one with three spires - and Chester.

M0nica Tue 05-Nov-24 22:05:14

Frankly, I cannot see the problem. A cathedral from each of the constituent countries of the United Kingdom. As they are used on Christmas stamps, four is quite sufficient.

Whatever four were chosen, nobody would be satisfied because the choice would never be everybodies taste. As for objecting to Westminster cathedral, that rather smacks of religious prejudice.

At best this is a storm in a teacup, and a very small teacup at that.

I am sorry I think

Maggiemaybe Tue 05-Nov-24 22:16:45

They’re lovely stamps. I must remember to get out and buy mine before they sell out.

HettyBetty Tue 05-Nov-24 22:17:15

I only send a very few cards and they are more Happy Solstice or Happy Midwinter in actuality.

I ask for the plain stamps at the post office, Christmas ones are just one option available.

For everyone who thinks it is expensive, I tend to disagree. Getting a card from Cornwall to Scotland, for example, seems more than 85p.

Ziggy62 Tue 05-Nov-24 22:19:57

Armagh is in Northern Ireland
Part of the UK
What a strange thread

Grannynannywanny Tue 05-Nov-24 22:26:45

I’ll have to reread the OP when I’m not half asleep. Maybe I’ve misunderstood but the suggestion seems to be that although the theme is UK cathedrals there should just be English cathedrals in the selection of stamps 🤔

Allira Tue 05-Nov-24 22:30:31

Apart from St Giles in Edinburgh, they aren't the most beautiful cathedrals in the UK.

merlotgran Tue 05-Nov-24 22:31:46

So where is your nearest cathedral, escaped?

Maybe they should have consulted you first.

Yes, * Henetha*, the artist, Judy Joel has a studio in Mousehole. I think you call her paintings "naïve", being self-taught. The figures look a bit Lowry-like. She usually includes her white haired mum and dog in paintings, though maybe not in the stamp ones.

Currently Truro, same county as the artist!

Allira Tue 05-Nov-24 22:49:27

This could be a lovely thread where we post pictures of our favourite cathedrals 🙂

escaped Tue 05-Nov-24 22:54:55

Do we have to guess, Allira. I know one of them.
I posted my photo of this one on GN last week. I think it was on an Autumn sunshine thread.
Exeter.
