TBH I didn’t, still don’t know what he had.

That said, I was glad to hear he seems to be over the current crisis as his Spiritual leadership affects hundreds of millions.
Did anybody see the film The Two Popes? It may have been pure fiction but gave me a fascinating insight into both the current pope and his predecessor.
I am sure I was not alone as I wept when the late Queen died, and I imagine Catholics all over the world prayed for Pope Francis and will personally mourn his passing when he dies.

But I would like to say to Monica whilst I agreed with most of your comment on this topic I think your flippant description of Liam Payne was totally disrespectful. His lifestyle wasn’t our choice but he was nevertheless important and special to his family.

Just to set the record straight, I have said nothing disrespectful or unpleasant about Pope Francis himself. For what it's worth I think he has actually been a good Pope.

Neither did the thread today set out to criticise anyone on here, Catholic or otherwise, for wanting to hear the intricate details of his final journey.

My problem was with the broadcasting of every medical piece of information around the clock over the past few days. I don't like it, I find it disturbing for want of a better word, that modern journalism wants to know painful details about a dying person's condition. Lengthy bulletins dissecting everything seem unnecessary. That's how I feel, though I do understand it is a delicate balance. I apologise if I worded the OP clumsily, but several posters obviously understood what I meant. Maybe it would have been better to discuss under a heading other than religion.

And to be fair, I would feel exactly the same way whichever important figure were being discussed in this manner at this particular time.

I am a non-practicing Catholic and am interested in the updates about Pope Francis, it would be the same of any leader of a large organisation (can you imagine if Donald Trump were that ill??!!!). His successor will be the 8th Pope of my lifetime

Because we do not choose, my late MIL wanted to die as she was riddled with cancer and suffering.

Who said they do not want to die. They simply want to fulfill their mission on earth first.

The way you are arguing. Every person of faith should kill themselves the moment they realise that there is a an afterlife.

My grandmother was a Catholic with deeply held beliefs, Mass every morning ,for example. She was also very tolerant so when a couple of her children married non Catholics in a CofE church she went to the weddings, she also went to the Baptisms of my cousins who weren't Baptised in the Catholic church.

She died from cancer, a painful death where she deteriorated over several months. She would say she wished Jesus would take her, sometimes she'd ask why he wouldn't take her. She wouldn't have done anything about it, so she waited for Jesus to make the decision although she did want to go.

He is 88 and not in the best of health - before this illness. It is not surprising that his life may well be ending.

Bluebellgran Thank you for your post. You asked the question I often ask. If the afterlife is such a wonderful place, why all the prayers being said trying to prevent anyone going there - when they are old and sick?

It is not a crass question, but quite a serious one. Okay, I am a lifelong, happy and contented atheist - but this is something that continually puzzles me. Surely, instead of mourning when someone dies, there should be celebrations of them having journeyed to this wonderful (mythical) place = Heaven.

He’s now been discharged from hospital after five weeks.He had double pneumonia so is very lucky to have made a good recovery at his age.😃

Easy cure for the kind of irritation mentioned in the OP: stop listening to/watching the news. "Once an hour" (24feb 11:44:27) could go down to once a day for a start.

Seriously, I'd go nuts with that level of 'engagement'.

I can hardly run and switch background ClassicFM off on the hour, can I? That's where I heard the overkill reports every hour on the Pope's anemia, kidney failure, choking on vomit etc. Anyway, 'engagement' with music is good for the soul, so I won't be switching off. And I'm not nuts, (most of the time).
After 4 weeks, I've long moved on, but thank you for your concerned advice!
I've said before, I like this Pope. His recovery is good news.
