Two callers at door today

I've had two people at the door this afternoon with large labels of "National Children's Society" on their chests.

This doesn't seem to exist.

I said 'we don't do anything at the door' and they went away.
Anybody else had this?
Anywhere I can contact?

101 for police non emergency

Get a No cold callers, please sign for your door. Our LA gives them out, I got a stash to give out to neighbours.
If they ignore it, I point to the sign and say nothing.
It usually works.

Was it the National Deaf Children's Society? They are doing door to door collections this week, there are details on their website of where they are collecting

I have a sticker on my door. I just shake my head and point to where the sticker is. We regularly get “ex offenders from a scheme” selling dishcloths etc door to door. This scheme does not exists and Police advice is not to buy and report on 101.

We get lots of charity collectors and people looking for work in my area .
It's usually tree pruners or garden clearance workers , who know absolutely nothing about gardening .
Or it's people wanting to pave over the front garden .
On one occasion I was told - after all it's a mess -annoying when I take great care to keep it nicely planted .
One guy put his foot in the door and another refused to leave my garden after telling me a pack of lies about needing access to a neighbour's tree .
He scared me .

If friends want to call on me I ask them to let me know , because I just don't answer the door anymore .

Not many callers in our cul de sac

Please be aware that if you are alone you don't have to answer the door to anyone, not even people in uniform including the police, if is a person in uniform and you think you should respond ask for their details through the door or keep the door ajar to hear it clearly, then shut it and go to ring the company/police station they say they are from to check. Scammers often pretend to be someone they are not. Or simply don't answer the door.

I read quickly, that's what it said.

101 for police, then.

I use a chain on my door if I'm doubtful and I 'm careful to say 'we' as if someone else lives here.

Considering I live in the main road of my town I never or very very rarely get any cold callers I think I had one a couple of years ago but never since

Get a ring door bell.
Or only speak from an upper window if possible.
Do not open door to unknowns. Take back control.

I have a sticker in my porch window, it says there is 24 hour camera surveillance, seems to deter most dodgy callers.

I had a caller the other day wanting to redo my perfectly adequate drive. I told him I don’t deal with callers at the door. He asked ‘ Why not? I was being polite’. So was I, but I still shut the door firmly.

I had a guy, in working uniform and flashing a card knocking on my door and saying her had come to test my water!!
I refused to let him in so he politely said OK and moved on.
He was probably bona fide as we have had water problems round here but I do not think you should admit strange men into your home on any basis.

Speaking from the other side of the fence, as it were, I was phoned by a worthy and legit charity and asked if I would be willing to do a house to house collection in my road and the immediate area. I lived in a relatively quiet but inexpensive area at the time so I agreed.

I was sent all the necessary ID stuff and a locked collection box. I had dropped round little envelopes with the name of charity printed on them and the date when I would call round.

Mostly people handed over envelopes for me to put into the locked box. Some people simply said they did not give money to door step callers, fair enough, no problem, move on.

However, I was astounded by the rudeness of some of the people I had to call on. One lot threatened to set their dog on me. Several simply told me to ---- off. Several more accused me of collecting for myself. One woman took one look at me and called her enormous husband down to see me off the premises.

The following year the same charity asked me to do it again and I am afraid I said no and gave my reasons. The woman I was speaking to said she understood, gave a big sigh and said my experiences were becoming all too common.

I usually say I don't give money to charities but my time as a volunteer. I too have had someone put their foot in the door to prevent me from closing it. I told him in no uncertain terms with an expletive to get his foot out of my door which he promptly did. I don't know who was more shocked at my language him or me but it did the trick!

I was taken aback by a man from local hospice collecting in the lobby of our supermarket. I said I already supported the hospice by being a customer of their charity shop, and donating clothes etc as well. He said that was not enough, the shops don't make enough and proceeded to complain about the people with new cars who also wouldn't sign up to a regular cash donation. I pointed out that (a) I was a pensioner, (b) I get my clothes from charity shops through necessity, and (c) my car is 22 years old. I was annoyed at having to justify my refusal, and doubt his attitude resulted in much in the way of additional donations. Rant over!

Sanmrbro Wed 19-Mar-25 14:01:05

Did you give him a urine sample?😂

Galton Wed 19-Mar-25 14:01:49

I thought it was illegal to cold call these days anyway. You did the right thing.

I once answered the door to a young lady who tried to sell me a painting she had under her arm.
I grabbed an air freshener off the hall shelf and asked her if she'd like to buy it.

She wasn't amused and neither was I so I sent her packing

Jaye53 Wed 19-Mar-25 14:35:58

I NEVER OPEN DOOR TO STRANGERS EVEN IF THEY SAY THEY ARE POLICE.

ReadyMeals Wed 19-Mar-25 14:45:54

I have a video doorbell. If it's not someone I know or am expecting I either just don't answer or I tell them to * off over the audio. But I translate that into something more polite.

jocork Wed 19-Mar-25 15:28:08

I used to regularly get people calling asking to resurface my drive. It definitely needs doing but I don't have the money. There are other things needing doing much more. One used to come back about every 6 months but he has clearly got the message now as I haven't seen him in years. I really should get one of those door chains. I've never had anyone put their foot in the door but if I did I'd threaten to slam the door on them!

Frenchgalinspain Wed 19-Mar-25 16:11:04

Never open your door to strangers.
