Martin Lewis angry at deepfake videos of him

There are a lot of deepfake videos circulating on Social Media which claim to be of Martin Lewis in an unreleased BBC interview promoting the sale of crypto currency, saying that they could provide a passive income for everyone, removing the need for welfare benefit payments. They are faked as are others of him giving other dodgy financial advice. Very dangerous - people who thought it was genuine have lost thousands,

Martin Lewis is angry about it.

Maybe he needs to keep a low profile for a while or get his privacy settings changed...

Martin Lewis has been copied for years. He is always livid about it and I don't blame him. His Money Supermarket and TV programmes are full of advice on financial issues so when his profile is used in promotions many people would put their trust in it purely because Martin Lewis says so.
There are plenty of warnings out there about deepfake/AI so people have to start to take responsibility when planning to part with their money.

This is nothing to do with his privacy settings, keepingquiet They have fabricated videos using artificially constructed images based on photos and videos of him which are already in the public domain, copied sound recordings of his voice, also already out in public, and manipulated them to make it look and sound as though he is being interviewed on a legitimate BBC programme answering questions and recommending financial actions. As his name is synonymous with good financial opinions people follow "his" advice because they trust him. Even if he had been dead for ten years, the scammers and AI techies could still make this kind of deepfake version of him.

Talking about scams, there was an item on the good morning TV about scammers now targeting relatives of those recently died. Small sums but getting people to pay to witness a funeral or coroners report.

If it has been going on so long why has he not taken action against these scammers?

They're like the Hydra - chop the head off one and two more (or more) will appear.

If it has been going on so long why has he not taken action against these scammers?

Because it isn't just one or two people behind it. When a fake video like this is made and published, possible anonymously or under an assumed name, it gets shared by other people on their own Fb pages - mostly because it sounds like a great idea by a famous financial advisor, which as many people as possible ought to know about - and then their friends share it and pass it on until it is travelling round the world. After a a while it becomes impossible to trace it back to where it originated.

I remember years ago, before the internet, someone very sensible telling me about a marvellous heart diet, supposedly circulated by a heart association, which they had heard about. It had some rather strange items in it, none of which were things I liked, so I didn't do anything with it. I saw and heard about it on and off for a while, then a genuine heart specialist said that the contents of it had no particular benefit to the hearts, quite the opposite in fact, and the heart association it was supposed to be created by denied all connection with it. Someone was "havin' a laff" at the sheep who had followed it.

There was another "diet" too, which included having cabbage soup as a starter before every meal. That must have had explosive results!

It's like saying if burglary has being going on for so long why don't the police or householders take action against the perps.

Martin Lewis took action against Facebook for the amount of scammers using his name. He settled the dispute when FB agreed to pay £3m to an anti scam charity. Sadly Martin's name is still being used.

Once your face and voice are famous, they can be stolen and used to make a fortune for someone else.

It's deadly stuff , all this Deepfake materiel.
One has to be so careful all the time.
On the general theme of being scammed , both OH and I have an incredibly light digital footprint and we still have to dodge bullets re texts for deliveries etc.
Wherever you are online at all , shopping, deliveries etc, the scammers seem to find you.
General whinge......

I'm shocked at the blame some comments are directing to ML!
This is a newish crime and now scammers can use AI make the fakes almost indistinguishable.
This is an area that really has to be tackled by parliament and police and soon. But there are many such areas! Animal cruelty and many crimes about the person. No money I hear MPs say - well there is money for their vanity projects!

I tried to report one of these on FB, and another of another famous actress.
I reported it as fraudulent, but FB refused to remove them

We used to say "The camera never lies" but with AI and deep fakes that is no longer true. Always be suspicious of recommendations by famous people. Sadly many are not the real thing.

I am so fed up of all the extra security measures in place now when you order online, access your bank or other accounts, or do anything that was before easy and is now complicated.

However, I know it's because of the scammers and I feel grateful for those who put in place the security needed, until the next scams succeed in getting through. I don't know where this is all going to end but I'm beginning to be glad that my years on earth are clearly numbered. Sorry to be grim, I just feel exasperated and fear the next related scam, whatever it will be.

My bank has an access code then a password then a long password with numbers and letters where you just pick a few of them. Then they text you a number to your phone and you enter it on the computer screen
And finally you can access the account!!!
If you pay anyone then you get a scam warning up asking if it's a genuine person even for paying say a plumber you've paid before.
I don't do the banking app on my phone as I don't think it's as secure.
Crazy times we live in now

They re doing early the opposite which Martin Lewis tries to do
But to read about scammers trying to get money from people whose relation has died really makes me wonder. how could any one feel this way

GoldenAge Sun 08-Jun-25 19:33:37

ML has done everything possible so I understand to locate these scammers and if anybody would get the bit between his teeth to solve a problem it would be him - there are many other celebrities who appear to be endorsing goods like slimming pills when these people have never even set eyes on them, let alone lost weight. Deepfakers and AI are a problem that we all need to wake up to. We are at the mercy now of the Technological Revolution which has, sadly, overtaken us and unless we re-think what information we give to people in an electronic form we'll definitely regret having allowed ourselves to be dragged into a cashless society and one in which our medical needs are managed by non-human intelligence.

His website is Money saving expert. Not MoneySuperMarket. That is a completely different company
