Where Is Greta Thunberg These Days?

Throughout our roller-coaster of a summer, the wildfires, tsunami's, typhoons and one weather-related crisis after another she has been conspicuous by her absence.

Which is very odd. She once addressed the United Nations and collected standing ovations.

Now? Is she bored with the climate crisis?

Oh that band ! Those that support Hezbollah.

And what difference has she actually made?
Turned her attention to Gaza more recently, made a fool of herself over Israel, and was last seen at a Kneecap Concert with her entire head covered., (no idea why).
Another one promoted far too young and far too rapidly and now having to face her inadequacies.

Greta Thunberg undoubtedly created a lot of publicity for the climate crisis, which is a good thing.
In my opinion what wasn't good and coloured my opinion of her somewhat was the highly publicised trip to USA she did on the carbon neutral yacht. She and her father replaced two crew members and so had to work the 15 day voyage, completely admirable. What wasn't so admirable was that the replaced crew members flew to USA to be able to crew the yacht on its next journey. All that had happened was Greta and her father's airplane carbon output was transferred to someone else. When this finally emerged and the crew were questioned The sailing team says that they’re buying carbon offsets for the trip and admit it’s an “imperfect” solution. Surely the same "imperfect" solution Greta and her father could have employed but wouldn't have earned such praise and publicity?

Don’t know & don’t really care!

Farzanah Mon 10-Aug-26 16:28:05

IMO we need more young people like Greta Thunberg, and we should praise her for her actions and bravery in drawing attention to the biggest threat facing the world today. Her name, linked to climate action, is known universally now.

It’s concerning that mitigation for climate change is not considered a primary consideration by many western governments who are exceedingly slow to take action although the evidence for urgency couldn’t be clearer.

Meanwhile Europe is so hot, with droughts developing.
More forest fires than in the past and sadly, one now in the New Forest.

paddyann54 Mon 10-Aug-26 16:50:07

All these grans who think she’s a hypocrite…..what about your beloved royals? They are constantly on planes and helicopters and even on shoots!
Then they make wee videos telling us how they support wildlife ….and the climate change movement.!
To add insult to injury the taxpayer keeps their coffers topped up along with the emergency services and charities that they charge exorbitant rents to.
Such a hypocritical bunch of parasites you won’t ever see anywhere else.
I,d bet that at least some of you stand at roadsides to wave at them!
They do say you can fool some of the people …..most of the time.

Rosie51 Mon 10-Aug-26 17:04:59

paddyann54 do you have any arguments that don't involve invoking the Royal Family as justification for absolutely anything under the sun? I think bigger hypocrites are people that take payment from them for services rendered while claiming not to want anything to do with them.
Calling any human being a parasite says more about you than them, a disgusting word to use.

Interesting that you haven't disputed the accusation of hypocrite against GT, just said there's worse ones. Is that really the point you wanted to make?

Bukkie Mon 10-Aug-26 17:07:31

Paddyann - You are so right. Charles claims to be green but flies everywhere and has gas guzzling cars. If Catherine wears an outfit more than once she is praised. I am the first to admit I am a hypocrite in many situations. I complain about the death of the High Street yet use Amazon, I have just given my bone dry towels 2 minutes in the tumble drier to soften them, I used disposable nappies when my sons were young, I buy bottled water sometimes to name but a few of my crimes

Climate change has gone out of fashion. In my opinion.

So what's causing all those record heatwaves, fires, crop failures, droughts, etc..... in your opinion?

Normal ups and downs of our climate.

Rosie51 Mon 10-Aug-26 17:26:19

fancythat even the most cynical person surely notes that weather events expected to happen once a decade, century etc are happening with much greater frequency? Yes our climate has always gone through cycles but the escalating frequency of extreme weather events is really quite scary.

Scientists have found that warming since the 1800s is mainly due to human activities, especially the burning of fossil fuels. Natural factors such as changes in the sun’s energy or volcanic eruptions have had much smaller effects on the long term warming trend.
There is no dispute about this scientifically.

Individual choices help but this isn’t primarily an individual problem. The biggest changes require governments, businesses, energy, transport, agriculture and industrial systems to change.

It’s too late to reverse the changes that have happened but it’s possible to make changes to mitigate future warming. Will this happen? If not the future is bleak for our grandchildren and future generations.
Not criticising, but applauding Thunberg for the attention she has drawn to this worldwide, is what we should be doing.

I do agree with this.

She brought the climate problem to the top of the agenda publicity-wise and is to be commended for that.

Luckygirl3 Tue 11-Aug-26 10:21:07

Individual choices help but this isn’t primarily an individual problem. The biggest changes require governments, businesses, energy, transport, agriculture and industrial systems to change. Yes indeed.

But as more far right movements gain momentum we are faced with their stance that somehow caring about the environment and making provision for mitigating global warming are somehow pathetic, wimpy, "woke" etc. and that "live for today" is the way forward. Unfortunately tomorrow is here in the form of drought, tornados, melting ice caps etc. and we cannot shut our eyes any longer.

I watched a Facebook clip the other day of a woman talking to Farage in the street and telling him how truly wonderful he is and what a saviour he is and how he should keep on doing what he is doing for us all ..... what exactly has he done for anyone I mused? .... certainly nothing positive, just spouting negative venom. It is this sort of mindset that will stop us tackling climate change at a governmental level.

Smileless2012 Tue 11-Aug-26 10:27:52

For me, it wasn't Greta Thunberg's message that I disagreed with, it was the rude, disrespectful and arrogant delivery.

Farzanah Tue 11-Aug-26 12:30:05

Why are some women so bitchy about other women and girls who do not conform to the received norm I wonder? It happens regularly on GNet threads.

Jess20 Tue 11-Aug-26 13:57:11

Quite right Tulip tree! Someone willing to put her head above the parapets! Climate change is with us now, very little proper leadership exists to help mitigate the effects. Good for Greta, as she pointed out, she's just a girl wanting to highlight the problem, those in positions of power are the ones who need to solve it. We need to keep up her good work or we won't survive what is coming, for most of us it may even be too late but she did her best. I hope she's having fun at the concerts and whatever she's doing but I'm sure she's also there because she has genuine ideas to share and I tend to agree with what she says. Sad that people can't listen and understand her I strad of mocking and putting her down.

Tuliptree

Not a good look - a few old women having a sarcastic go at a brave, idealistic young woman who gives a damn about the world their grandchildren will be living in when they’re long gone.

Well she doesn’t care that much Tuliptree as she’s conspicuously quiet on climate change although arguably she had some influence there, unlike her banging on about the Middle East and the iniquities of Israel. Interestingly she refused to watch the Israeli film about the Hamas atrocities committed on Oct 7 which started the current war.

Rosie51 Tue 11-Aug-26 14:49:28

So while endorsing her message and drive, is it just me that was really disappointed in her for knowingly causing the two displaced crew members (as per my post of Monday at 15:36) to fly to New York instead of her and her father? That was just offloading their carbon footprint onto someone else and not eliminating it. To me that was dishonest as she was lauded for doing a 15 day sea trip rather than take the easy way out and flying.

MayBee70 Tue 11-Aug-26 14:58:22

There’s a new series on Prime called The Westies which is about the troubles and features the music of Knee Cap. I only realised they were Irish by listening to this weeks Must Watch. They pointed out that most young people will know nothing about the troubles but will learn about it if they watch the series but also that they could also learn about it from watching Derry Girls ( which I still haven’t watched). I think Greta is an admirable young woman; I’d be so proud of her if I was her granny.

So shes not Miss Perfect. That doesn't mean we shouldn't take the climate crisis seriously.

Of course we take the climate crisis seriously, very few don't. That doesn't mean any criticism of an action she has taken should be forbidden or hidden from sight so as to perpetuate the myth that she is perfect. Do you ignore wrong doings by everyone you admire or can you accept 'feet of clay' sometimes?
