Can you sort that Mumsnet lot out please.

They've deleted a thread we were working out perfectly well ourselves.

Movedalot Tue 22-Jan-13 18:00:36

Perhaps the weather person was in London and therefore thinks that the frozen north doesn't count! [sarcastic emoticon]

Elegran Tue 22-Jan-13 17:57:46

Quite irrelevant to the thread, but I have just read a weather report which said "East Anglia will see the coldest weather tonight as the thermometer plunges to -4C, while in North East England areas with lying snow could plummet to -8C. "

Eh? Does someone not know that -8 is colder than -4?

Movedalot Tue 22-Jan-13 17:52:08

Oh, forgot, a MAC gets going a few seconds quicker.

Ana Tue 22-Jan-13 17:52:04

Yes, you can't 'cut' anything from an article on the internet for instance - whole websites would be littered with holes...grin

Movedalot Tue 22-Jan-13 17:51:44

DS3 has used both and is currently on a MAC, says he'll go back to Windows next time. The idea that they are better for normal everyday use is long out of date, the differences are far smaller than they used to be. The main differences are the price and the label. I find them both easy to use and can switch between them with no trouble.

I mean, It is not blue so you don't click on it - just copy and paste.

I have just thought - we say "cut and paste" but we really mean "copy and paste" because we are not cutting something out to put it elsewhere, we are copying it to put somewhere else.

If you see what I mean.

PS Jane - when I said elsewhere that Glass was eligible to join the Edinburgh lot (being near Hexham, which is almost in Scotland) I meant you too - did not mean to pass you over.

Elegran Tue 22-Jan-13 17:40:54

Jane you don't click on a blue - you select it and copy and paste.

j07 Tue 22-Jan-13 17:29:33

Well, I like it. [thumbs nose]

janeainsworth Tue 22-Jan-13 17:21:47

Gally
Put your cursor at the beginning of the word(s) you want to copy.
Left -click with your mouse.
Maintaining the left-click, ie holding the mouse down, move the cursor across so that it highlights the word(s) you want to copy.
Now unclick. The words will stay highlighted.
Right-click with your mouse.
There will be 3 options, one of which is 'copy'.
Left-Click on 'copy'.
Now... this is possibly the tricky bit. Go to wherever you want to put the copied words - possibly a new word document, or the message box on a Gnet thread.
Left click so that the cursor appears where you want the words to go.
Now, you're nearly there.
Right-click. One of the options will be 'paste'
Left-click on 'paste'
Lo! The words will appear.

*Elegran' I found your thread but there didn't seem to be anything 'blued' to click on... I would love to be able to add musical nbotes to my messages!

The good bit of Windows came from the deal with Apple Mac. The rest of it is rubbish.

j07 Tue 22-Jan-13 17:15:01

You can't beat Windows.

absent Tue 22-Jan-13 17:13:07

j07 Macs are standard throughout the publishing industry, so anyone who works in that field is likely to use one. They are so much more user friendly than Microsoft systems, even though Microsoft bought the rights to use a Mac hierarchical system in Windows.

Gally Tue 22-Jan-13 17:11:15

j07 they're supposed to be the bees knees; I'd use one if I could afford one but I don't work for GN!grin

j07 Tue 22-Jan-13 16:58:27

Cari I didn't know anybody actually uses a mac. #whyfgs

Gally Tue 22-Jan-13 16:55:09

Thanks elegran I'll look but I have to confess that, despite numerous instructions from DD3, I still don't know how to cut and paste blush I really must go on a course for ' technophobical' 60 somethings!

janeainsworth Tue 22-Jan-13 16:54:27

Jesssmile

Re the plural of 'forum' -this is from the Oxford Dictionary which is good enough for this fully paid-up member of Pedants' Anonymous:

"The plural of forum is usually spelled forums; the plural fora (as in the original Latin) is chiefly used when talking about a public square in an ancient Roman city."

Gally for hearts etc look at "DIY emoticons" thread in the "Tech stuff" topic and go to my post on Tue 18 Dec 2012 at 10.54.

You can cut and paste these. Suggest put them into a Word Doc and save it, then you can copy them whenever you want.

Movedalot Tue 22-Jan-13 15:42:32

Well River we are not in pedants so probably won't get a difinitive answer from an expert! grin And as the say - pretentious, Moi?

Riverwalk Tue 22-Jan-13 15:36:30

Nah Move I'm sticking with 'ums' !

Fora in particular, looks pretentious smile

Movedalot Tue 22-Jan-13 15:06:04

jess I keep wondering if it should be fora as well, it just sounds right to me like referenda.

Gally Tue 22-Jan-13 14:38:55

Can't get hearts on my laptop or the iPad. Will have to rev up the old 'pooter if I need them!

JessM Tue 22-Jan-13 14:09:09

jane I believe there are some forums (fora?) in which moderation is anon. But I could have got this wrong. Not getting at you obviously.

Carigransnet (GNHQ) Tue 22-Jan-13 14:01:07

Stansgran YES!!!! Ask him if he would like to do a webchat grin

And j05 on a mac no numbers top right and if you do alt plus a normal 3 you get ###### sad

Stansgran Tue 22-Jan-13 13:09:30

Geraldine et al I am at last in Geneva and the bus to the UN goes outside my back door. Would you like me to pop in and see if Kofi Annan is there- I'm sure he must be a grandpa by now and if I could get him to join gransnet and give a love thy fellow poster pep talk would that help?
