.....when the new Editor of GN takes over they don't go too mad with the red ink.

Gransnet could be in danger of losing the small amount of zing it has at the moment. hmm

bluebell Sat 10-Aug-13 13:35:09

Mentioning no names of course!

janeainsworth Sat 10-Aug-13 13:35:10

On the other hand j08 Gransnet could be in danger if losing regular posters because they get fed up of fairly obvious trolling and assorted mischief-making.
Moderators have a fine line to tread.
Just saying.

Ana Sat 10-Aug-13 13:38:59

Fairly obvious trolling is soon sorted, Jane!

Elegran Sat 10-Aug-13 13:48:14

Yes, by banning the troller.

janeainsworth Sat 10-Aug-13 13:52:52

No Ana.
Very obvious trolling is quickly dealt with, but a clever troll won't be so obvious and that's more difficult.

Ana Sat 10-Aug-13 14:01:10

I must miss them all then...confused

kittylester Sat 10-Aug-13 15:08:10

I missed that we are getting a new editor. I always manage to miss everything! confused

Galen Sat 10-Aug-13 15:17:53

Come on kitty kitty,keepupgrin

Ariadne Sat 10-Aug-13 15:22:33

jane is right, there are sometimes some clever and manipulative trollers on forums who need careful monitoring.

Ana Sat 10-Aug-13 16:08:31

But how do you define a 'troll'? Surely not everyone who stirs things on this or any other forum is necessarily one? They might just be having an off-day, or be bored...

And who does the monitoring - other members or the moderators, because the latter don't always seem to be available!

This might ring some bells Ana

mrshat Sat 10-Aug-13 16:18:50

Very interesting Jane - thank you.

Galen Sat 10-Aug-13 16:30:49

Fascinating!

whenim64 Sat 10-Aug-13 16:33:24

Excellent examples of trolls who regularly appear on social networking sites like Gransnet, and are encouraged to stir things up. Thanks, jane

j08 Sat 10-Aug-13 16:33:55

Trouble with this place is, if someone doesn't go along with the views of the majority, they are said to be "stirring". hmm

It has to be one big love-in or nothing.

j08 Sat 10-Aug-13 16:38:24

Just read that link. I do NOT believe there is anyone on Gransnet who falls into those sort of categories.

Although people can be made out to be that bad. Which is ridiculous.

vegasmags Sat 10-Aug-13 16:38:57

A very good article jane

j08 Sat 10-Aug-13 16:43:45

I would suggest an alternative title for that article: "How to become adept in online unkindness and not giving anyone the benefit of the doubt"

Elegran Sat 10-Aug-13 16:46:11

J08 As you know and understand perfectly well, views are one thing, personal insults are another. So is deliberately causing posters to attack one another, or setting out to sow trouble. All these things have been done before now on Gransnet. It is not immune to trolling.

Elegran Sat 10-Aug-13 16:47:30

I'd say posters get the benefit of the doubt on Gransnet for quite a while before they become impossible to ignore.

j08 Sat 10-Aug-13 16:50:50

Whoever wrote that article has got to have a twisted mind. It's horrible.

whenim64 Sat 10-Aug-13 16:56:30

There's a growing recognition of the harm caused by trolls, some of which is creeping and insidious. There's also a growing determination to refuse to put up with trolling, which contributes nothing to social networking.

j08 Sat 10-Aug-13 16:58:17

Yes. On the likes of Twitter. And the newspaper article comments sections. Not on here.

j08 Sat 10-Aug-13 16:59:03

I'm not talking about the sites young people use.
