I mean, when talking to other adults? As in, "Still thinking about our tummies...".

thatbags I think that big jobby is/was a Scottish expression because that is the word that I was brought up with.

A woman wearing white shoes would be "common" in my mother's eyes. Except at school to go with my white dress and veil I have never possessed a pair of white shoes, except trainers.

vampirequeen Sat 14-Sept-13 16:54:21

Oh dear yes. Many things make a woman common (according to my mum). White shoes, smoking in the street, drinking pints, speaking to loudly, swearing, wearing short skirts, wearing low tops, tattoos, too much makeup, badly dyed hair, roots showing through dyed hair....the list is endless.

When we moved to Devon thirty five years ago, I noticed that the word belly was commonly used rather than tummy by most Devonians, along with phrases such as where's it to?
I too am Mummy to my adult daughters.I expect there are a few of us around!

Penstemmon Sat 14-Sept-13 17:07:53

Euphemisms can get you into trouble. I knew a little boy who used to say he needed to 'Go and think' when he needed to poop! In school the teachers were confused as was he when they told him to sit down at his desk and think!

kittylester Sat 14-Sept-13 17:16:49

Poos (our family word) were called 'big lots' by Mrs Bucket aka my mother. grin

Penstemmon Sat 14-Sept-13 18:21:13

For some reason my DGDs refer to bras as 'boobybras' not sure where else they imagine you would wear one!grin

Anne58 Sat 14-Sept-13 18:30:21

Very true Penstemmon grin But better than "over shoulder boulder holders"

I have been pondering this at great length confused and come to the following conclusion:

Belly. Only when preceded by "beer" or "jelly" or "he's got a bit of a..."

Stomach for general aches and pains and medical or digestive uses smile

Tummy Always when talking to children. Also to reference size or weight gain... he/she's getting a bit of a tummy (generally a cake thing) and always when in pain and needing sympathy and/or a hot water bottle. Oh and for rumbling. Which it is now. Do please excuse me while I remedy the situation cupcake cupcake cupcake cupcake

Ah...that's better

Humph! Medical is abdomen!

Jendurham Mon 16-Sept-13 22:27:42

Hope you do not come across too many AAAs, Galen.
Abdomen always makes me think of insects, head, abdomen and thorax.

Re my previous post about a this rhyme my dad use to say!

"And the cow in the barn
Kicked Nellie in the belly.
But the old man said
It wouldn't do her any harm!"

I have found a version that appears to be a campfire song.
Isn't the internet wonderful!

I have puzzled over that ditty for about 60 yrs!

I shall sleep happily now!

You have to dance when you sing it

grannyactivist Tue 17-Sept-13 01:05:36

Well I call my belly 'tummy'
My grown daughters call me 'mummy'
For a wee I need a 'loo'
And a number two's a 'poo'. grin

Nelliemoser Tue 17-Sept-13 09:01:19

Where I grew up in Leicester I think poos were referred to as bob bobs. I think my DD has said there is a similar term in South Yorkshire.

CariGransnet (GNHQ) Tue 17-Sept-13 09:01:24

Galen true smile and I would say abdominal pain etc. But stomach as in acid if that makes sense (I should add I am talking generally rather than specifically!)

dustyangel Tue 17-Sept-13 09:46:57

I had a fix catchup of Gransnet last night after a difficult day and the thought that Cari of the great HQ could take time to ponder on such an important subject really made my day. Thanks Cari for making me laugh.
flowers and extra cupcake for you.

Too many cakes!!! hmm

j08 Tue 17-Sept-13 09:52:24

She would have been sitting cross-legged on her bed in her 'jamas, having a catch-up dustyangel. smile

This reminded me of a dire warning that used to hang on a peg in our 'bathroom' when I was little:

John and Mary thought they knew much better than their mummies.
They ate their tea with hands not washed
Now both have painful tummies.

No wonder I'm screwed up! smile

CariGransnet (GNHQ) Tue 17-Sept-13 10:05:11

Always too many cakes. Sign. Buying a new cake tin to make mini Victoria sponges from Lakeland <purr> was possibly a bad move for the waistline.

CariGransnet (GNHQ) Tue 17-Sept-13 10:05:30

Clearly that should read sigh...
