I want to post a message with smileys or strikethrough but when I preview it does not seem to have converted automatically in my post. Do the smileys not show until you actually post the message?

use the square brackets each side of the word smile - it will show up as a word when you type it, then appear as an emoticon when you post
likewise also with the strikethrough

I don't think it works in the headings of a post

sorry, heading of a post thread

Prooves the point smile should say 'never' of course.

confused. - -testing- -

Artyfarty Sat 11-Nov-17 17:55:53

Well the smiley worked but not the strikethrough!

Artyfarty Sat 11-Nov-17 18:00:58

Should I be using the square brackets for a strikethrough or italics? Sorry to be a nuisance.

oldgoat Sat 11-Nov-17 18:26:07

For a strike-through artyfarty don't leave any spaces between the hyphens and the word.

ninathenana Sat 11-Nov-17 19:07:17

Sorry oldgoat I think Artyfarty's problem is the space between the hyphens - - should be -- she/he had no space between the second hyphen and word.
Just trying to help.

ninathenana Sat 11-Nov-17 19:08:29

Just re read your post, I think that's what you meant blush sorry

Artyfarty the hyphens should be together and with no space between them, like this -- and with no space before or after the word. So --stikethrough.....
... followed by strikethrough--
When typed out all together you'll get strikethrough

Artyfarty Sat 11-Nov-17 23:35:04

It doesn’t work whichever way I do it. Could it be an iPad problem? sad

Artyfarty Sat 11-Nov-17 23:43:00

Thank you Bathsheba but if I type two hyphens with no spaces it comes out just one long one like this —testing—
Not to worry, it’s late so goodnight for now.

Since I upgraded the operating system recently I’ve had the same problem with my iPad, so not you, I suspect an Apple glitch, so unless or until there is a fix no strikeouts for us. I could do it without problem before the upgrade.

I’ve just got an I pad, I can’t do it either, could always do it on my ancient kindle. confused

Maggiemaybe Sun 12-Nov-17 07:59:27

I can’t do the - - without a space on my iPhone now. I just get —. I’ve no problem on my desktop or Kindle, so I’m sure it’s an Apple issue.

Anya Sun 12-Nov-17 08:01:38

It is an Apple problem just started since last iOS update.

Well I see what you all mean - I can’t do this on my iPad or iPhone. BUT I can do it by using the presets in the circles below right. Tap the I in a circle and you’ll get a drop down menu of ‘styling’

Artyfarty Sun 12-Nov-17 09:38:06

I in a circle? Do you mean on the iPad keyboard?

cornergran Sun 12-Nov-17 10:07:20

Sorry bathsheba I also am struggling to understand where I find the 1 in a circle with the iPad. Would, you explain, please?

Bathsheba Sun 12-Nov-17 11:40:24

Hang on, I'm on my desktop at the mo. I'll get my iPhone and take a pic and post it....

Bathsheba Sun 12-Nov-17 11:48:45

Can you see the 3 circles, one with a smiley, one with a capital I and one with a paper clip? Tap on the middle one and then two on th strikethrough style. It will appear in your text with th cursor in the middle, all ready for you to type
