Deleted PMs - This is important

I was concerned to find that some of my private messages around 20 December last year have disappeared, apparently “deleted at user request”.
Well I certainly did not delete them so the question is “which user” ?
How can anybody interfere with private messages- I thought the clue was in the name.
Izabella Annodomini and Lemongrove might like to check theirs too.
Coincidentally they were generally on the same topic.
Is Big Brother not only watching us but censoring our mail?
I take a dim view of this breach of confidentiality if that is indeed the case .

I am beginning to wonder whether it is mostly fall-out from Jalima's spring-cleaning her inbox and outbox.
No, it's not because of that Elegran - I was alerted to this a couple of weeks ago by another poster and neither of us had deleted the said post. We thought it was just a one-off and weren't sure why it had happened.

I only 'spring-cleaned' this morning after being alerted by this thread of yesterday's date as I wondered if I'd been hacked.
Then I realised that deleting posts in both in box and sent box deleted the messages from anyone else's post too.

Rachelle that is not true at all WE NEED MUCH MIRE THAN THIS AS AN EXPLSNTION

I was in the middle of a conversation when I went to answer next day hers had been deleted and after that about seven of hers were deleted I messaged to ask if I d offended her and she knew nothing about it and was as puzzled as me SHE HAD NOT CLEARED HER INBOX. And is still an active member
So I would like that explained please Rachelle

Just as I thought ( pats self on back) ?
So nobody should feel rejected if their past messages from a poster are deleted, we are just tidying up.

I am beginning to wonder whether it is mostly fall-out from Jalima's spring-cleaning her inbox and outbox.

Others must have been springcleaning too, before I did.

Jalima1108 Tue 19-Feb-19 14:50:29

I hope that makes sense

Not really; I'd like to know why it happens.
It doesn't happen with emails.

lemongrove Tue 19-Feb-19 14:50:33

.......except for Bluebell’s friend!

BlueBelle Tue 19-Feb-19 15:00:23

I had four messages deleted ‘at posters request’ on 14 and 15 jan I wrote to the poster saying I was so sorry had I said anything to offend you on 16th I got an answer back saying I don’t know what you mean no you haven’t offended me and I haven’t removed anything

kittylester Tue 19-Feb-19 15:02:39

Hi have had a few messages from dragonfly deleted but random ones - no logic to it at all.

Cherrytree59 Tue 19-Feb-19 15:10:41

I have no deleted PMs
Has everyone checked their personal email account.

When I receive PM it asks if I want view in my (personal) email or GN inbox,
I generally use my personal email and star the email so it goes into separate folder.

As far as know GN would not be able to access my private Email account only my GN inbox.

Would it be worth 'starring' a previously received email from a poster in personal email account and then asking sending poster to delete the message?

Thank you for the feedback. I will take this information back to our tech team and see if we can get to the bottom of this!

Elegran Tue 19-Feb-19 16:05:29

Goog idea, Cherrytree about observing whether a given message is deleted.

Blue Belle

'pogs you can look at older messages there is a small backwards or forwards arrow at the top of the messages right hand side'

THANKS

Rachelle

Unless I am misjudging what you are saying you report as though this has ALWAYS been something that has occurred.

Until now I and I don't think other posters have been used to seeing / ever noticed eg :-

' This message has been removed at user request'

So has this wording ALWAYS been used when pm's are deleted by either party as I think you are suggesting is the cause.?

Thank you.

BlueBelle Tue 19-Feb-19 16:51:17

I ve never had it happen until this last few months
I can understand maybe if the poster has left GN although I think the wording is very wrong as if they ve left they haven’t asked for it to be deleted
But what about posts in the middle of a conversation that have been removed when neither poster or receiver have asked for it to be removed, and both are still active users Please explain that GN

Day6 Tue 19-Feb-19 17:09:59

Thank you for raising this.

I too wondered why it happened and if the people I had messaged (they in return replied - all were friendly exchanges) had somehow been offended by my views!

(I knew this not to be the case because most of my messages are jolly or in agreement with the person posting them.)

What is going on? None of the posters I have exchanges with would want to delete a record of their conversations. Why would they?

Day6 Tue 19-Feb-19 17:26:39

Those pm' s could have held information I wished to keep but they have disappeared and I find this beyond alarming

Same here POGS

One was a confidence shared about a troublesome time. The thought of others reading, seeing and knowing my business is very disturbing.

Who has got the power to delete apart from the user?

MawBroon Tue 19-Feb-19 17:30:10

However it has happened there is a point of principle here.
Who “owns” the PMs we write or receive ?
If I get a stroppy or unwelcome PM I am at liberty to delete it from my own inbox and block the sender if I so choose.
I have no right to cause it to be deleted from her sent messages, that is her private business.
And nobody else should have the right to delete anything I have sent from my own outbox
Compare this with your emails and you will see what I mean.

This business of group PMs is just a red herring.
If I message 4 GN friends and one of them chooses to delete the message from her inbox for whatever reason that should have no effect on anybody else’s inbox or on my sent messages

Anything else is entirely unacceptable. .

GrannyGravy13 Tue 19-Feb-19 17:34:29

Mawbroon I totally agree with your post.

Privacy is being invaded, and may be contravening the new data protection act?

kittylester Tue 19-Feb-19 17:40:41

Exactly what maw said. It is disturbing!

Day6 Tue 19-Feb-19 17:42:12

Just WHERE are the missing messages and just WHO deleted them?

WHO read them too, more to the point? angry

We are owed an explanation.

kittylester Tue 19-Feb-19 17:55:26

I'm winning!!

I've just had a pm come 3 times!!

lemongrove Tue 19-Feb-19 18:03:37

I think it’s something that started happening just last year.

MawBroon Tue 19-Feb-19 18:05:39

What bothers me is that this has happened and presumably nobody thought the old dears would notice.
There is no evidence if it happening in past years (apart from * lemongrove* and jalima’s total cull and don’t get why either as again conversations I have had with them have disappeared )
So is this sloppy tech? A deliberate plan?
Either way, you may lose members. I for one am not best pleased or satisfied with the security of this haphazard system and may revert to emails in future.

lemongrove Tue 19-Feb-19 18:12:07

Exactly Maw and don’t wish to see my pms moaning about my bad back and other woes splashed about in the Mail or Mirror ( The Times, possibly, but that’s all?)

Jalima1108 Tue 19-Feb-19 18:23:20

There is no evidence if it happening in past years
There was no evidence of it happening before the last two or three weeks.

Apologies to anyone whose messages I have deleted whose own messages have been deleted as a result due to this new 'blip'. It was done this morning after reading this thread and as a result of thinking that GN pms had been hacked.
Some pms may have contained personal or sensitive information.
