Deleted PMs - This is important

I was concerned to find that some of my private messages around 20 December last year have disappeared, apparently “deleted at user request”.
Well I certainly did not delete them so the question is “which user” ?
How can anybody interfere with private messages- I thought the clue was in the name.
Izabella Annodomini and Lemongrove might like to check theirs too.
Coincidentally they were generally on the same topic.
Is Big Brother not only watching us but censoring our mail?
I take a dim view of this breach of confidentiality if that is indeed the case .

Absolutely.

hose pm' s could have held information I wished to keep but they have disappeared and I find this beyond alarming

Agreed, POGS

At least with an email account the deleted emails go into a 'trash can' before being finally deleted.

Three of my sent messages, replies to the same recipient, from last November have been deleted. Those that precede it and those that come after are still in place. I can’t imagine that the person I sent them to would have requested them to be deleted as they were quite innocuous in content, and I certainly didn’t request it. Puzzling.

Perhaps that person is having a tidy up as well Greyduster - or is worried about privacy on GN now, as many of us are.

If she or he deletes their sent message themselves it will delete the message in your inbox too.

All messages from Old Batty around beginning of january have been deleted at users request has also happened to me,one other GN I speak to is fine.
Old Batty had mentioned something to me that I thought she later regretted and I wondered if that was the reason for the deletion.
Hope you are ok if you happen to look in OB

Still hoping for clarification from GNHQ and a statement of principle regarding privacy.
I dont see why the system as it applies to emails is not impossible - ie. I can delete received emails from my inbox, or those I have sent from my “sent” box, but once they have left me I have no control over them. And nobody else has access to them.

Gonegirl Wed 20-Feb-19 09:33:49

I'm not sure I see the problem. When it says"deleted at user's request", doesn't it mean just that? I suppose it's a new thing that's been brought in. Can't see anything wrong with it.

Gonegirl Wed 20-Feb-19 09:34:23

Where does privacy come into it? confused

Marydoll Wed 20-Feb-19 09:41:48

Gonegirl, I had PMs deleted, which I did not request to be deleted, so for me it is a problem.

Jalima1108 Wed 20-Feb-19 09:43:41

The privacy question that arises is - who has ownership of the pms? And who has access to them?

If I receive a pm and it is sitting in my inbox how can someone else, even the sender, delete it?
It should not be possible, should it?
How does this fit in with the new GDPR Regulations?

Gonegirl Wed 20-Feb-19 09:47:36

Oh right. (Jalima) It does look a bit odd when you see it in your inbox. You wonder "Why? What did I do?"

Jalima1108 Wed 20-Feb-19 09:49:32

downtoearth
oldbatty has presumably 'tidied' her mail boxes - but the question is how do they get deleted in 'your' mailbox, both ones you sent and ones you receive?
It means that you do not have ownership of any pms you sent; if sent to more than one person and one of the group deletes the pm it is deleted altogether - in everyone's inboxes and in the sender's.

That cannot be right and we don't yet have a satisfactory answer from GNHQ.

Fennel Wed 20-Feb-19 09:51:59

I've just checked mine and 5 messages from Jalima were deleted on 5 and 6 Nov. last year.
Very mysterious.

Fennel Wed 20-Feb-19 09:54:51

Also 4 sent from me to Jalima.
I remember now what the subject was, a bit sensitive.

Jalima1108 Wed 20-Feb-19 09:59:20

Te plot thickens, Fennel - I didn't delete anything until yesterday.
And if you didn't delete them who did?

Marydoll Wed 20-Feb-19 10:01:27

Here is a question: Is this a of violation of The Human Rights Act?.

The Act gives effect to the human rights set out in the European Convention on Human Rights. Article 8 - the right to respect for your family and private life, your home and your correspondence is one the rights protected by the Human Rights Act.

RachellaGransnet (GNHQ) Wed 20-Feb-19 10:02:18

Our tech team is investigating this. Rest assured that we are looking at it urgently.

And please don't worry, security is not compromised.

MawBroon Wed 20-Feb-19 10:05:01

I would imagine your posts were deleted retrospectively Jalima even if you did it recently. Loads from you to me have disappeared (and possibly vice versa) smile

Buffybee Wed 20-Feb-19 10:25:43

I've got deleted PM's but only from Lemon and Jalima who have both stated that they have cleared their messages.
All the others are ok.

breeze Wed 20-Feb-19 10:29:37

Could I ask, those of you who have lost PM's have you either requested to remove a thread, or, had a post within a thread removed by GNHQ recently?

I've checked mine and all are there, recent and going back years.

I wondered if there could be a 'blip' in the software, so if you request to, or, have something removed, it has a link to PM's with your name on them and removes those too.

Just a theory. Otherwise a bit of a mystery for the techs to unravel.

Mine are all o.k. I haven't started any threads in recent times or had any posts removed.

Elegran Wed 20-Feb-19 10:30:31

Fennel Are you sure that Jalima's messages of 5th and 6th Nov were deleted then, ? Maybe they were sent then and deleted yesterday when she was clearing things?

Elegran Wed 20-Feb-19 10:31:46

It would be better if the date of deletion were shown, as well as or instead of just the date the PM was sent/recived.

MawBroon Wed 20-Feb-19 10:40:34

My point too Elegran

breeze Wed 20-Feb-19 10:48:55

If lost PM's are 'only' ones sent by people who have had a clear out then there's your answer.

When they delete their sent, it removes from the recipients' inbox. Must be linked. Also shouldn't happen. Recipient should choose what they want to keep or remove.

POGS Wed 20-Feb-19 11:51:08

I know there were pm's showing the term:-

' This message has been removed at user request'

PRIOR to one poster on here who has stated she cleared her
Messages out of concern the site had been hacked.

Jane10 Wed 20-Feb-19 11:53:53

Argh! Now I'm getting emails from GN to tell me there's new replies on a games thread that I had 'hidden'! What next?
I hide the all the games threads as they tend to take over all the active thread space.
