Please note everyone!

Please stop saying things like ' thank you ladies'.

Welbeck I like the idea of being called Grandee, I don't take offence at being called a lady , it's well meant.

PamelaJ1 Wed 08-Jul-20 07:22:30

Not sure about grandee, here’s the definition from Collins.

Does it matter what you call me as long as you are not nasty? Hunni, my lovely, lady, old pal even Ma'am have all been used in the past....I enjoy the conversation!

NanKate Wed 08-Jul-20 08:31:40

At the beginning of the Lockdown someone who I had never seen before gave me details of who to contact if I needed food. Very kind.

HOWEVER she then said to me ‘Are there any other ‘elderly’ people living near here’. ? I could I have bopped her one. I’m 73 try to dress well in a reasonably fashionable way, always wear make up, go to Keep Fit, walk every day and have my own teeth.

I have now seen the funny side of it, well just about !

lemongrove Wed 08-Jul-20 08:36:42

Nan grin

As long as the men on here don’t start addressing us as ‘babes’
(Fat chance eh?)?

MamaCaz Wed 08-Jul-20 08:36:51

I'm happy to be one of the 'guys'.
The dictionary says this noun describes a group of people of either sex, so I presume that includes most/all of us on the site. ☺

That said, I suspect that the words 'either sex' could themselves spark a debate in these gender fluid times!

Grandad1943 Wed 08-Jul-20 08:56:04

There are many men on there own out there who very often struggle to maintain themselves. In many instances, they can in their late year's be even more vulnerable and lonely than women.

Therefore it would be nice, I feel, if more encouragement were placed by GNHQ to brining such persons onto the forum where at least some virtual companionship and at times assistance could be found.

However, I often feel that although GN states that the forum is open for use by both genders, in reality "Grans" not "Grandads" is what they want.

That said, it is very encouraging to see so many on this thread wishing to see more men on the forum, and in that alone perhaps GNHQ will take note and perhaps act?

Very good thread though.

Cant stand 'ladies'. Women, guys, friends, posters - all perfectly ok

Nortsat Wed 08-Jul-20 09:34:28

I think it’s important that men feel welcome on GN and I would not want to be involved in something which made people feel excluded.

However, I do wonder if some of the subjects discussed are of marginal interest to some men. Presumably they simply avoid those threads.
My partner has no interest in joining GN but we often discuss issues raised here.

I posted recently about ‘lovely women’, but that was a reference to the support shown by posters I know to be women.

I personally prefer to be referred to as a woman, but I don’t take exception if others use the term lady. I do use the term ‘guys’ particularly at work, with my mixed sex team.

I think we are in danger of putting some people off posting. It is already a minefield of political correctness, then there are the pedants to consider. It seems that everyone is just waiting to be offended by something, and mostly small unimportant things.

Iam64 Wed 08-Jul-20 09:53:50

* A minefield of political correctness*

cupcake. The reward for one of the most inaccurate comments on gransnet ever.

Whitewavemark2 Wed 08-Jul-20 10:00:05

Just as an aside.

Did anyone listen to R4 yesterday morning where they were talking about the gradual realisation that men’s DNA and genetic makeup is weaker than women's. They went on to describe various evidence.none if them was the fact that more men got and died of C19. It has always been known that the mortality in male babies is higher than females. I think that there are more male children born as a result.

Quite interesting that.

DiscoGran Wed 08-Jul-20 10:32:25

Iam64. Are you disagreeing with me?

lovebeigecardigans1955 Wed 08-Jul-20 11:47:14

I don't mind being called a lady but let's face it, whatever term you use there'll be someone who doesn't like it. You can't please them all.

Galaxy Wed 08-Jul-20 11:50:53

I find that really interesting WW, I am not sure we pay enough attention to the differences between the sexes, eg the way autism presents differently between girls and boys.

H1954 Wed 08-Jul-20 11:56:33

I cottoned on quite early that there was men on this site so, if I ever want to express thanks I use "thank you GNetters" covers everyone then ?.

Just for the record I detest the terms: hun, hunni, babe, chick, mate, matey, pal...........oh, I shall be here all blooming day???

SueDonim Wed 08-Jul-20 13:14:56

At my daughter’s graduation the attendees were addressed as ‘Men and women’ rather than ‘Ladies and gentlemen’.

I was rather miffed that being a woman rather than a lady meant being demoted to second place. hmm

Iam64 Wed 08-Jul-20 13:29:09

For clarity, yes DiscoGran, I'm disagreeing with your statement that gransnet is a minefield of political correctness.

Rufus2 Wed 08-Jul-20 13:48:00

Me and I believe Rufus2 both use the term Ladies
Too right Grandad! It goes well with "gracious" and is also useful for identifying where not to go for a pee in a shopping centre! grin
Reminds me of that old music hall joke;

"Who was that Lady I saw you with last night?"
"That was no Lady, that was my wife"

Please don't give up! sad

I don’t really care how many men there are on GN - why should it matter? As long as they don’t engage in mansplaining and inappropriate innuendos.

DiscoGran Wed 08-Jul-20 14:05:43

Iam64. I'm glad to hear that, because it read like just another of those rude and mean spirited comments made by those who can't counter someone else's opinion.
Have a cupcake and sweeten up! ?

Whitewavemark2 Wed 08-Jul-20 14:08:47

galaxy I can remember my grandmother who said that “boys are harder to rear than girls” they could teach scientists stuff?

Grandad1943 Wed 08-Jul-20 16:35:14

suziewoozie

So, there is no womansplaining that takes place on this forum you feel then suziewoozie. ??

suziewoozie Wed 08-Jul-20 16:53:04

No such thing as ‘womansplaining’ ’ imo Grandad. What there is though in general is a great need for men to listen to women far more as then they might understand more.?

Lucca Wed 08-Jul-20 16:54:54

Is that. “ touché “. Suziewoozie??
