Hi all

We think that it'd be good for us to get to know each other a bit more.

We at GNHQ are here to moderate the site, look after our users and ensure that Gransnet is an inclusive and supportive community. We're post-moderated, which means that we rely on reports to let us know what's going on. Our aim is to respond to every query we receive, so please don't be afraid to get in touch.

We're also keen to listen to feedback about site functionality, so tell us what you think - we'll always pass feedback on to the relevant team(s) for discussion, with the promise of making Gransnet better and more efficient for all users. If you've got any ideas for improvement then please share them below. Changes at the back end of the site do take time, but we're more than happy to keep you updated during the process.

Please feel free to introduce yourselves by replying below (or send us a hello privately via email/report if you prefer).

P.S Every time you hit the report button, an angel gets its wings (or a troll gets booted off site). <repeatedly clicks report button>

Indeed Doodledog. Iam64 has been locked out for far too long, we need her back asap.

Doodledog Sun 15-Aug-21 11:54:35

And as she was someone who requested the Feminism space, can we please have Iam's access sorted out?

Chewbacca Sun 15-Aug-21 11:48:53

Odd isn't it FannyCornforth? Iam64 and I campaigned several times for it and received assurances that it was doable but nothing happened. I can't see why it's such a big ask - there is a Feminism forum on MN that has 2 sub forums and they're well accessed and posted on. I know that a forum for black MNetters was asked for, and was set up within days, so why can't we have a Feminism space? hmm

FannyCornforth Sun 15-Aug-21 11:41:29

Chewbacca that’s interesting re the feminist sub-forum.
A few months back, a poster suggested a ‘Scam’ sub-forum, and it was up and running within a day.

Chewbacca Sun 15-Aug-21 11:41:01

Well, one thing we do know about Curlysue is that she has a weird SIL that snoops on her phone and stalks her on social media, poor woman. I hope she closes her registration on GN down and re registers under a different name. Look out for a thread entitled "My SIL is a nosey control freak, what should I do?"

Mollygo Sun 15-Aug-21 11:32:17

The prompt action about the Holiday thread should reassure all of us that GNHQ is awake on Sunday mornings. Shame in one way. I really did want to know about Curlysue.

Chewbacca Sun 15-Aug-21 11:12:40

LilyGransnet whilst were grateful for your assurances that out requests are being taken seriously and being passed on to decelopers but may take some time to implement, please can I draw your attention to a request that was made over a year ago and has still not seen fruition? Iam64 and several others, asked for a Feminism chat section, just like the one on Mumsnet. We were assured that it could be done but, a year later, and no sign of it. Please don't assume that just because the majority of us here are grey haired and retired, that we don't want to discuss feminist issues in a designated space. Can we have that space or not please?

FannyCornforth Sun 15-Aug-21 10:53:22

Thanks Lily
I think that we all know the score.
No jam today…
What I’d absolutely love ❤️ would be the voting facility that MN has for AIBU threads.
That would really get more footfall on here!
I see that MN has been refurbished; I was rather hoping that we could inherit the old MN site

Hi Soniagransnet.
The reason for meandering into chit chat about other topics was, I think, that there seemed to be no interest from GNHQ in our actual suggestions (as usual).

So now you've got to know us as a bunch of grumpy grans on this thread.

Hello

We're sorry if that's the impression we've left - it's quite the opposite! We want to improve the site for everyone, and are taking note off all the suggestions to pass over to our development team. Sadly, it'll likely take some time - but we wanted to get started on the things people really wanted to see, so that Gransnet is a brilliant place for everyone.

If someone has been banned, or left because of ill-feeling, they aren’t likely to come back and announce their old name, though. I don’t see that as dishonesty so much as discretion.

FarNorth Tue 10-Aug-21 23:33:45

One of my pet hates is people who are not honest and come back with 'clandestine' names, the same posting style but try changing their 'background'.

I haven't noticed that but it wouldn't particularly bother me unless the person was being insulting or offensive and then they'd get reported again.

I've only ever reported one person, btw, so long ago I can't remember what it was about.

It probably makes a boring job a little bit more interesting.

DillytheGardener Tue 10-Aug-21 22:32:24

NanKate I do find it a faff on my phone as I’m dyslexic and use predictive text. When I try to put a star ahead of the name, it then flags it as incorrect spelling which makes it hard to then add in the last star.
It’s a also a pain as it doesn’t actually tag the person, so unless they go back and check new messages on the thread they won’t know if they have been mentioned.

DillytheGardener Tue 10-Aug-21 22:27:38

I enjoy your posts too JaneJudge, they are always, pragmatic, reasonable and empathetic.

BlueBelle Tue 10-Aug-21 22:27:30

Oh what a blooming pickle
I hate all this reporting behind peoples back it feels like little kids running to the teacher If someone says something you don’t like, talk it through never go running to mother to sort out
I think it’s totally awful and I think it’s wrong that GN moderators encourage this back stabbing anonymous reporting

I love your posts Jane if that's any help but I am a bit odd grin

Would we be on GN if we weren't?

???

NanKate Tue 10-Aug-21 21:20:33

What a faff it is to embolden a user name, those stars at the beginning and end ?

Galaxy Tue 10-Aug-21 21:02:53

The problem being that the accusee will only receive the interpretation that HQ puts on the accusation.
They have no true right of reply.

JaneJudge Tue 10-Aug-21 20:38:50

I've felt a bit picked on over the last few weeks too on various threads and I always try and be fair

^We may be grown women, but if people are being banned from posting because of board politics it's not a level playing field. ^
And that as well, Doodledog

Some must have their finger on the report button frequently otherwise GNHQ would not know about this, therefore if someone has a grudge then they could be influential in getting another person banned even if they themselves are not above suspicion.

I have to agree here. I wonder how many reports are made by posters holding a grudge against a particular poster, with the intention of getting them banned.

I sometimes feel the moderation is inconsistent, it depends on who reads the report, their experience, their interpretation of what has been posted and underlying issues HQ are unaware of. At least in a court of law, you are given the opportunity to defend yourself.

Some posters are very subtle and clever in their bullying, making sure they don't post anything contentious enough to warrant a warning.

Galaxy Tue 10-Aug-21 20:18:54

But everyone has a different opinion of what that moderation should be, that's why it's difficult.

kittylester Tue 10-Aug-21 20:17:32

GNHQ shouldn't be taken in by the number of Reports. That went badly wrong when they (and a few posters were taken in by a tr**l poster.

I realise that it makes me sound like an old fuddy duddy but we need lighter, more objective rather than reactive, moderation.

Callistemon Tue 10-Aug-21 20:14:10

I suggest that GNHQ try not to be taken in by cliques complaining about cliques. It's just plain silly. FGS we are grown women!!!!!

Yes!
