Hi all

We think that it'd be good for us to get to know each other a bit more.

We at GNHQ are here to moderate the site, look after our users and ensure that Gransnet is an inclusive and supportive community. We're post-moderated, which means that we rely on reports to let us know what's going on. Our aim is to respond to every query we receive, so please don't be afraid to get in touch.

We're also keen to listen to feedback about site functionality, so tell us what you think - we'll always pass feedback on to the relevant team(s) for discussion, with the promise of making Gransnet better and more efficient for all users. If you've got any ideas for improvement then please share them below. Changes at the back end of the site do take time, but we're more than happy to keep you updated during the process.

Please feel free to introduce yourselves by replying below (or send us a hello privately via email/report if you prefer).

P.S Every time you hit the report button, an angel gets its wings (or a troll gets booted off site). <repeatedly clicks report button>

The OP and all subsequent posts are green on my phone and tablet and always have been. I don't really understand why other people don't have the same facility.

Grannybags Thu 05-Aug-21 21:26:05

We've been asking for all the OPs posts to be highlighted for so long.

Why keep asking us what we want then just ignoring all suggestions?

Spinnaker Thu 05-Aug-21 21:20:59

Could the name of the OP be printed under the title of a new thread - that way you can avoid opening threads that you just know are going to be contentious, especially the politics ones.

Galaxy Thu 05-Aug-21 20:56:13

I agree NFK about a possible delay, there have been a fair amount of troll threads lately and I imagine it's impossible for HQ to prove one way or the other. They have a similar dekay system on MN in terms of posting on the sex board for obvious reasons.

FarNorth Thu 05-Aug-21 20:36:20

Could we PLEASE go back to the “Active Conversations” page showing threads in the order of contributions- most recent first like it used to be.

I didn't realise it had changed. What order is it in now?

I agree it should be in order of contributions.

BlueBelle Thu 05-Aug-21 20:34:47

I know how to do it pittcity but your first post made it out to be simple and it’s not it’s a drag I use mobile so I have to change to desktop then click on the arrow and get rid of it then you have to do it individually for each game thread then go back to the mobile site and the next day you wake up and if people have played on them they are all back on your newsfeed again
Slow and laborious and not lasting

I would like to see discussions threaded within the thread instead of all posts being listed sequentially.

For example, here, people are remarking on editing, likes and games. If I want to comment about editing I can tag onto that group of posts. If I want to comment about likes, I can tag onto that group of posts and so on.

Also I would like to see a warning if someone has posted on a thread between me starting to type and posting a response. Something like "Three people have replied since you started typing your message. Would you like to review what you have written before posting? This might reduce the incidence of repetitive messages.

Seconded NotaGran55 suggestion to be able to close a thread.

Lastly, and this might be unpopular, but a day or two delay between joining GN and being able to join discussions. It would reduce the amount of spamming and may also reduce the number of essay-length dyfunctional family stories from one- off posters who are never heard from again.

These suggestions are all features on other discussion forums that seem to work well.

Good suggestions Silverbridge [like!]

And thank you Pittcity for bringing that option to my attention - I hadn't noticed it before!

Can I add a request to add to the Bookmark facility, that the thread automatically opens where I last posted? I keep forgetting to book mark it and often can't remember where I was (its my age you know).

Pittcity Thu 05-Aug-21 19:11:56

I meant convuluted not concluded.....edit button please!!!!!!

Pittcity Thu 05-Aug-21 19:11:11

Pittcity

These are what I use to hide threads after I've opened them once.

If using a computer you need to go right to the bottom of the page and click on "view mobile site" before you can use the arrowed menu. Simply click "desktop site" once you've finished to return to original view minus the offending thread(s)

Yes it is concluded but it works. The threads seem to return if you are not logged in!

The main improvements I would like to see are:-
1. All the OP’s posts highlighted.
2. The “see all” facility from Mumsnet where you can read all of the OP’s posts on the thread sequentially.
3. The @ feature from Mumsnet where adding @ before the member’s name allows that person to be alerted and directed to the post. @Esspee for example. It encourages communication as not everyone returns to a thread after contributing.
4. A special games section
5. Love Silverbridge’s idea of a delay between joining and being able to post
6. The means to edit your own post for about 15 mins to remove ridiculous auto correct errors.
7. The ability to close your own thread without it disappearing.

Over a year ago I was placed on the norty step and I am on my final warning. This is for life I believe-surely that is unfair because if I was in prison there would be time off for good behaviour. I doubt if I am alone.

There is something incredibly dispiriting in contributing to a thread for it to have dropped off the page immediately.
It also makes it easier to follow the most popular as well as the most recent threads.
Why ever did it change in the first place?

Harris27 Thu 05-Aug-21 18:32:53

I’ve found it a solace on some occasions and very supportive but other times a bit snobby and hurtful.

And I would want to know a bit more about an edit button and how that works on other sites in terms of trolls and personal attacks.

On some sites it is left to trust, but on others more like this one which is public and has lots of members there is a 5 minute window, so people can see their post and correct/adjust any errors or ambiguities.

On others you can edit until someone has replied, so that you can't edit to make their post seem silly.

There is usually a note at the bottom to say that a post has been edited and how often.

It would be good to have a search facility which enabled us to enter the name of a poster and see links to all their posts in reverse chronological order ~(ie most recent first)

Can the news thread be separated from politics?
They are somewhat incompatible.

NotAGran55 Thu 05-Aug-21 18:04:49

The ability for the OP to close their thread would be great please .

BlueBelle Thu 05-Aug-21 18:03:37

galaxy no ones pushing anyone in a corner that’s such a strange remark if you want to go in for competitions you go to a different area I m sure they don’t all feel pushed in a corner

Calendargirl Thu 05-Aug-21 17:58:26

Hear hear for moving Games into a separate section.

BlueBelle Thu 05-Aug-21 17:52:55

Sorry pittcity that is not how it is at all I m not at all sure what you mean but it isn’t possible to do that I m on an iPad and I have to do a complicated number of steps to hide each one and the next day they are all back !!

Chestnut Thu 05-Aug-21 17:50:36

Pittcity

I always hide the games threads and anything I don't want to be involved with. That way I can see more of what I am interested in.
It's easy to do using the drop down menu top right.

Sorry, that's just not true. There is no drop down menu and no way to hide them on a computer.

Galaxy Thu 05-Aug-21 17:44:32

I dont like people being pushed into a little corner, it feels unfriendly. As someone mentioned just hide them or scroll past.
