This lady of 81y lives alone and GN was a great source of company for her. These long winter days are difficult for many to cope with at the best of times. I learned recently that she was given a lifetime ban. I feel very sad about this.

In the spirit of ? and goodwill to all, would you let her rejoin?

seacliff Sat 04-Dec-21 06:47:20

I hope EG will be allowed back. It would a kind thing to do. People should be treated equally on GN and they evidently aren't. Others who had a lifetime ban have returned, some by stealth. Please can you respond? Thankyou.

BigBertha1 Sat 04-Dec-21 06:14:14

I'm with you Bluebell she should be given another chance.

NanKate

There is an eerie silence from GN HQ ?

I've had an email, in response to reporting my own post.
They say they're thinking about it and will get back to us.

BlueBelle Sat 04-Dec-21 04:25:51

Sorry this blooming site keeps posting twice even though I only pressed once

Elspeth45 Sat 04-Dec-21 04:17:56

On the other side of the world I miss her. I checked in every day to see what she had to say. I think I'm from the same part of the UK as EV so feel like a neighbour. Can't believe she has a lifetime ban, there are others who post on some threads who should be banned or certainly slapped on the legs. Some people are really quite rude.

BlueBelle Sat 04-Dec-21 04:16:54

Most of any shenanigans go over my head I often don’t even connect a poster with a post after I ve read it I don’t think I know EV like you all do as I don’t go on the good morning thread etc and I certainly missed any previous shenanigans Again I ve no idea who the missing posters you all talk about are either I must live in a parallel universe HOWEVER I am totally against unfairness and this is unfair
So HQ my question is this are there different levels of lifetime bans why are some posters allowed back after lifetime bans and this poster is not ?

There has to be a level playing field and a Christmas amnesty seems a very good place to start
Forgiveness is a wonderful thing

There is an eerie silence from GN HQ ?

I have just found the ‘^Gransnet Day of Direct Action^‘ thread in which EV’s lifetime ban was lengthily challenged.
It was the 5th September.
MichaelGN posted replies on page 5 of the thread.

FannyCornforth Sat 04-Dec-21 02:28:49

Sorry, that should read that GNers emailed HQ about EVs ban.
It was a long thread, and many GNers got involved.
I’m surprised that no one seems to remember it.

FannyCornforth Sat 04-Dec-21 02:25:42

I don’t know if anyone remembers; (it seems that most don’t) but a few months ago I started a thread called ‘Gransnet Day of Action’.
It might have been August, I’m not sure.
Anyway, it was predominantly about another poster’s inability to post, through no fault of their own.
(Thanks to a lot of badgering, and also Lily@GN, the poster is now post.)
The other main aim of the thread was the reinstatement of Ellan following the then recent news of her ‘lifetime ban’.
Members of GN pmed HQ asking for EV’s ban to be reconsidered.
GNHQ replied that they ‘would not allow a poster back due to popular demand’.

I feel like I have to post now, even though I intensely dislike these kind of threads.
There is people who have been allowed back who have done far more than be outspoken.
Ellan is forthright (and sometimes forthwrong) but never, ever spiteful.
Bans should be clear, and fair, and every member given the chance that others have been allowed.
So, fair treatment for everyone, please.
Bring her back!

That's a good point GrannySomerset.

Mollygo Fri 03-Dec-21 23:40:50

I have no idea why EV would be banned. I don’t recollect any harsh words and reading all the posts on here in support of her return, it would be good if GNHQ reconsiders-and soon.

Esspee Fri 03-Dec-21 23:37:16

I have reported my own post to draw attention to the strength of feeling from members on this banishment. It ensures GNHQ reads the thread. May I suggest we all do this.

Grandmafrench Fri 03-Dec-21 23:36:11

No, I never meant you, Calistemon - Lt.Eve

Smileless2012 Fri 03-Dec-21 23:32:37

I agree Chewbacca. The 'rules' don't seem to make much sense do they.

I think a life time ban is harsh, however in fairness, I dont think Gransnet can say why she was banned, and the reasons are not our business.

Calistemon Fri 03-Dec-21 23:22:56

Given that the person she upset and offended has posted here and generously asked that she be reinstated

I'd just like to clarify that, although I said I had a difference of opinion with EV, it was not over anything offensive that she may or may not have posted.

It was over something about which we both felt strongly and was a very long time ago, water under the bridge.

Grandmafrench Fri 03-Dec-21 23:15:57

Shelflife

I don't know anything about EV and was ready to support her return . Have seen now she was posting homophobic posts! I have thought long and hard about this and can probably forgive her due to her age .
However , had I read those homophobic comments I would have been extremely upset indeed!
Very odd the HQ are not responding!!???

Homophobia is a no-no for me! However, I must say that I have possibly more than 20 gay friends and not one of them would make the ageist comment that you make in your post, Shelflife. But we're all different, we are all upset or angered by completely different things in life and sometimes we all speak out of turn or say things we later regret. We can all take offence but often it's more sensible just to walk on by and ignore things that we cannot instantly change in people that we know very little about.

Well done, Urms for thinking to start this thread, although I don't hold out a lot of hope for a measured response from those who banned a very popular poster. 5 pages of posts here in support of Ellan and not a squeak from GNHQ. Here we are again!

Cheesey describes Ellan Vannin accurately. She is not a poor old lady. She's someone who is warm-hearted, kind and considerate. She never puts herself first, never complains, never moans or craves attention and is the matriarch of a family who are so lucky to have her; her friends are lucky too. When lockdown struck, her uncomplaining, (crumpet-filled posts), were humorous, caring, interested as well as interesting. She is always self-deprecating, saw the funny side in difficult times and was the first to offer comfort and wise advice to anyone she felt was in difficulties. On her own maybe, but filled many of us with admiration as she pulled those big girl pants up high and got on with her life.

Given that the person she upset and offended has posted here and generously asked that she be reinstated, and was not the person who reported her, we must draw the conclusion that someone rushed off to snatch the moral high ground in the hope that Ellan would be silenced. Amongst adults, one would have hoped for a lot better.

Gransnet is awash with posters who have been banned but who have returned - sometimes having learned nothing from an enforced absence and who are frequently involved in all sorts of unpleasantness. To permanently deprive one long-standing
and popular GN member of contact with so many Grans who looked forward to her daily posts is beyond draconian - it beggars belief. I just despair.

Chewbacca Fri 03-Dec-21 23:07:39

The reasons for lifetime banning appear to be arbitrary. For some it seems to be one strike and you're out - no second chances. For others, it seems to be several warnings and then a ban. If a poster can be banned for sustained and prolonged bullying and harassment and then be allowed back, I just cannot understand why EllanVannin hasn't been allowed back. She was definitely no bully.

DillytheGardener Fri 03-Dec-21 22:45:26

Urmstongran hopefully will get GN in the spirit of the season to bestow a little Christian forgiveness! ???

lemongrove Fri 03-Dec-21 22:19:27

Something to consider....Ellen may have moved on happily to another forum, they do exist!
However, she may still read GN now and again, so Happy Christmas Ellen if you see this thread.tchsmile
