This lady of 81y lives alone and GN was a great source of company for her. These long winter days are difficult for many to cope with at the best of times. I learned recently that she was given a lifetime ban. I feel very sad about this.

In the spirit of ? and goodwill to all, would you let her rejoin?

I agree it's ridiculous a lifetime ban, even in real life murderers get parole. I didn't really know EllannVannin but l support her reinstatement.

That is interesting. Are you saying that pressure from other members succeeded in overturning a ban?

LauraNorderr Sat 04-Dec-21 14:40:32

Yes GillT57, absolutely the point.
Whitewave a precedent has already been set so no problem for GNHQ to repeat.
Please moderators let us welcome EV back in time for Christmas ?

I know how I felt either last year or earlier this one when I was banned for at least 2 weeks and I became one of the Doghouse Grans.

Some people can be a bit trigger happy not thinking of what the consequences can be.

I also am on my own and for me it was a very miserable two weeks.

This is another implication of these bans. It could either lead to posters not reporting a dreadful post because they are worried that it may lead to a ban, thus we could have a nasty free for all, or it could lead to a pile on with a clique getting someone banned.

GillT57 Sat 04-Dec-21 14:34:05

I had a few disagreements with EV on here, and found some of her views completely contrary to mine, as did others I assume, but this is surely the point of GN? To debate, chat, educate, read and give other points of view? If any posts are intolerable, just delete them, not the poster.

The other forums I visit are democratically moderated by a panel of contributors. Much better!

I feel horrified to learn that an elderly lady has been banned for life from any forum. That an elderly lady has been banned from the company of other elderly ladies is unconscionably cruel, and amounts to what in the real world would be solitary confinement.

One of the posters who was banned, (the only person I have ever reported) trolled the site relentlessly, taking numerous identities, pretending to be a worker on zero hour contracts during the pandemic etc etc, on threads like this they would advise others how to avoid a ban. I dont want them back thanks very much. This is not EV I am talking about just to make this clear. I absolutely dont want everyone who was banned to be reprieved. Would that include the person who trolled the GM threads by talking about sex (I am being polite here).

I posted my thoughts on this yesterday, Galaxy

I think draconian measures such as lifetime bans for unknown reasons should normally have no place on what is supposed to be a supportive site like Gransnet.
Of course, if someone was a t***l or being constantly abusive towards other posters then a ban could be the right thing, after warnings.

Please start another thread if you would WWmk2 as I really would like this one to be specific and supportive in regard to EV’s ban and would prefer not to muddy the waters by general debate.

It isn’t a debate but questioning why one poster should be given this consideration and not another.

I’m not arguing against the posters return, far from it, as I think GN are generally infantile in their banning. Of course there are things that no site can tolerate.
But if they are giving one poster consideration then they must look at the wider implication.

Whitewavemark2 Sat 04-Dec-21 14:19:10

Reading about the current one it seems a shame if she is alone etc as people suggest, but there was another poster who was banned,- who again I didn’t know, who died, and GN consistently refused to give into pressure.

I think season of goodwill seems as good a reason as any.

There are posters I am sure who like me were never part of a circle of “friends” on GN. I’m happy not to be because it isn’t my thing, but if they have been banned they don’t have anyone to speak up for them and that seems unfair.

WWM2 have there been many people banned for life?
Someone was really horrible to me a couple of years ago and was reported (not by me). I can’t remember now who she was or whether she was banned from the site. I did suspect that she returned with a different name.

We don't know who's been banned unless someone is in touch off GN, though.

People disappear for all kinds of reasons too.

Did you have a particular poster in mind, Whitewwave? Do you want to start another thread?

No I haven’t a clue who is or isn’t banned.

But it occurred to me that GN will leave themselves wide open if they give into pressure without giving consideration to others who have been banned.

It would seem terribly unfair imo. Not balanced.

Germanshepherdsmum Sat 04-Dec-21 14:12:28

That sounds a sensible way forward wwm. Season of goodwill and all that.

Calistemon Sat 04-Dec-21 14:11:03

Otherwise this does seem very biased?

biased is not the word I'd use, but it is specific.

It does occur to me that if one banned poster is given a reprieve then everyone else who has been banned should also be given an amnesty. I assume there are others who would like to return?

Perhaps people can put forward other names?

Otherwise this does seem very biased?

merlotgran Sat 04-Dec-21 13:47:56

Adding my name to the thread as well.

threexnanny Sat 04-Dec-21 13:38:15

I would like to see her allowed back too.

kittylester Sat 04-Dec-21 13:38:07

And mine!

Greendress Sat 04-Dec-21 13:17:38

Please add my name to reinstate EV.

Apologies paddyanne I perhaps ought to have mentioned that I found her phone number, written down last year and rang her a few days ago. I was anxious in case she’d had a bad atrial fibrillation again and was so relieved when she answered the house phone! She would LOVE to come back to GN. She hasn’t joined any other forum and said she really misses so many of us that she’d felt she’d got to ‘know’.
?
Thanks GG13 for explaining. ?

What thread, can you give us a little clue and put us out of our misery ?

mokryna Sat 04-Dec-21 12:50:00

That’s great * glammanana*, wish her well and if it is allowed, give us an update.

Kamiso I do hope you recover and are able to return home soon.

Nightsky2 Sat 04-Dec-21 12:48:43

I’m all for having her back.
