To separate News from Politics

GNHQ have commented on this thread. Read here.

Urmstongran today made a suggestion to GNHQ that the above two subjects should have their own threads. Apparently we have to register our approval or interest here.
So yes, please please, please.

I’ve started a discussion in news and politics. My aim was the news element. I’ve been accused of playing politics because previous posts show I’m not a supporter of the party the man in the news previously represented in parliament.
Am I guilty of bringing another thread in?

lemongrove Sat 11-Dec-21 09:18:39

Galaxy you would be as free to express your feelings as you are now, just that threads are for differing topics.
You could start as many political threads as you like. You could comment on how you feel about news items, just as you can on threads under relationships, food, chat etc.

I agree Josianne another reason that posters would want to give their opinions on a purely emotional level to breaking news without quoting facts and figures and stats and political point scoring.Particularly tragedies.

99% of GN posters like to see the actual facts behind a story.

The remaining 1% are threatened or irritated by knowledge that doesn't chime with their preconceptions and want to close down debate.

No googling, I made it up. Its my opinion and I'm entitled to it. And If you tell me otherwise you're just being a bully.

Josianne Sat 11-Dec-21 09:21:52

Galaxy I personally have absolutely no problem with the free speech of others, and I hope they feel the same about my comments too. I just find it tiresome when all this vying for whose responses are the most important kicks off in News items and even Political items.

lemongrove Sat 11-Dec-21 09:30:08

No point replying to a comment such as that Alegrias so I won’t.

Lucca Sat 11-Dec-21 09:30:25

“ No politics on any news threads is what I and others are advocating.”

Right so that’s pretty clear.
No gardening comments on the cooking thread too ?
No menopause comments in pedants corner ?

Lucca Sat 11-Dec-21 09:31:22

Will there be a head girl and prefects to monitor it ?

Alegrias1 Sat 11-Dec-21 09:32:28

Oh, I think we could make some suggestions for those positions Lucca.

Josianne Sat 11-Dec-21 09:33:58

Alegrias1

Oh, I think we could make some suggestions for those positions Lucca.

OK fire away. Or shall I start?
Personally I can't think of anything worse!

lemongrove Sat 11-Dec-21 09:39:27

This isn’t a new suggestion, there have been many calls for news and politics to be separated before now over the years.
Now there are calls again for it and GNHQ are listening, but I for one am quite happy to accept whatever they decide on this.

Alegrias1 Sat 11-Dec-21 09:39:35

So what will happen Josianne, if someone posts something on a news thread that somebody decides is "politics"?

If there had been a discussion about Dunblane and I popped in and said "I think they need to change the gun laws", who is going to tell me my post is out of place and only expressions of sadness are allowed?

Unless some people decide that they are the (informal) arbiters of what can and can't be posted.

Whole thing's unworkable.

Josianne Sat 11-Dec-21 09:44:13

Well as I have experience of being Head Girl (!!) and more, I would acknowledge your comment on gun laws as being something which didn't cross my mind, but which I might want to return to later. To start berating you for it is not something I would do as of course the comment is pertinent.

Galaxy Sat 11-Dec-21 09:46:20

Thanks for telling what I will be allowed to say on a thread lemongrove. There was a political thread the other day and a number if posters were discussing the jumper someone was wearing, I cant even remember what the thread was about, I think it was to do with Johnson and the parties but I may be wrong. I assume in the future I can ask those people to leave the thread as they are not on subject.

Buttercup1954 Sat 11-Dec-21 09:48:18

Yes. Totally agree. Please.

lemongrove Sat 11-Dec-21 09:50:28

Gun laws could be talked about and were at the time, and still could be where the subject matter was about guns ( which that was) you are reading too much into this Alegrias

Posters would be free to ignore overtly political posts on a news thread if they wanted to and if somebody was determined to make a point on there by politicising a news item I think they would soon tire of it.

25Avalon Sat 11-Dec-21 09:51:26

Good point Galaxy. All too often the main subject of a thread is deviated from with all sorts of postings that are nothing to do with the thread. Trying to get back on track often proves impossible.

Alegrias1 Sat 11-Dec-21 09:52:03

What about if I said that the gun laws were completely inadequate and the government should do something about it? The government of the day is the Monster Raving Looney Party and you will not countenance any criticism of them whatsoever. Will you berate me then?

(I don't expect you would, but some will...)

lemongrove Sat 11-Dec-21 09:55:21

Galaxy the immature and personal nature that posts are taking on this thread by those against separating news and politics thread isn’t surprising but is disappointing.
There are quite a few posters btw who castigate others for taking a subject off course ( be it jumpers or anything else) already.

Alegrias1 Sat 11-Dec-21 10:06:12

hmm

Anyone who thinks it applies to them can take that hmm personally.

Lucca Sat 11-Dec-21 10:07:05

I’m at the point now of being immature actually and saying “Whatever “

Lucca Sat 11-Dec-21 10:08:46

. Why (on average I’d say) are those of a “right” persuasion all for this and those considered”left” not ?

Whitewavemark2 Sat 11-Dec-21 10:11:01

Honestly I don’t see the problem.

I think it’s brilliant.

All those moaning on about politicisation of an issue will be gone.

All snowflakes who hate to be challenged - gone.

I and others will be gone from the happy chappy threads.

Such a good idea.

Galaxy Sat 11-Dec-21 10:12:08

I think your posts are very personal lemongrove.

Galaxy Sat 11-Dec-21 10:15:35

What do you mean posters would be free to ignore political posts, they have that freedom now. You can ignore any post you dont like or report it if it breaks guidelines.

Urmstongran Sat 11-Dec-21 11:00:02

Lucca

I’m at the point now of being immature actually and saying “Whatever “

Now that did make me laugh thank you Lucca! ?

Actually a further thought.
It would not difficult to post some NEWS and then if someone thought, ‘no hang on this is all because of ‘ .....’ and his/her government decisions’ could then start a thread on POLITICS about the deeper ramifications of said NEWS and all who might be interested in explaining/pontificating/asking for verification links/deeper understanding etc could slide across to join in. Me included if I were interested.
