Has anyone on GN got the right to give private information about you?

(593 Posts)

GNHQ have commented on this thread. Read here.

Surely not. People on GN should have the right to anonimity, unless they choose to divulge any private information, be it about profession, locality, ethnicity, or whatever.

Secondly, should any information given in a PM be fair game to share to other members? Surely not.

Some people

*sigh

I'm in, BlueBelle. I come on here most days, but when things like this happen I never seem to have a clue what's going on. It really put me off GN when I first joined, as it felt as though I'd never be part of things. I don't feel like that now, but am very aware that there is a library of backstories that I know nothing about.

That's fair enough - it's inevitable in an organic community like this - but when threads like this start, and people start making accusations about Some People, it is really frustrating.

I’m sorry if this thread appears cliquey believe me it’s not.
Some of us on GN have been here a long time. Some of us have very good memories.

Crikey, I hope not, or I sailed down the Rhône for 1000 posts totally oblivious, then frolicked in the Med for another 5 or 600.
There was a poster constellationgazer whose eating habits were uncovered. Is this the private information?

Joseanne Thu 15-Dec-22 13:16:43

I'm in Bluebelle and Co. I haven't been on GN as long as some here, but do sort of pride myself on picking up nuances and niggles across the threads. I think someone referred to it as "remarkable recall"!! (I used to work for the European Police for a few years), but even I am baffled.

No bullying that I have witnessed here.

Unnecessary drama? Yes.

Rosie51 Thu 15-Dec-22 13:20:39

Put me down amongst the confused, out of touch, definitely not one of "The In Crowd" ........I now have that as an earworm, and what's worse I'm singing it Doodledog 🤣🤣🤣

Abitbarmy

We’re not harking back to river cruises are we? Just wondering. I may be on completely the wrong tack here…

Sorry Meryl I meant to quote the thread about cruises just above yours.
I tripped over a rock yesterday, went dow n with a bang, and have a sore head today!

There really is no in crowd, just a few posters who know what is going on, the OP knowing this was the case when she started this thread. I wouldn’t have a problem with revealing all but GNHQ won’t allow it and without doubt, know we will be reported in the blink of an eye, resulting in being banned possibly. It’s frustrating for all.

I repeat: there is no clique, no in crowd just very long time members with good memories.
There was no need for the OP. As I can see this is because someone made reference to the OP living in Switzerland.
As someone mentioned when you are a long time member you recognise peoples style of posting, it doesn’t matter how many names they’ve had. Most probably that poster recognised the OP and innocently made reference to it not knowing that the OP didn’t want to be recognised.

Here's another ear worm for those fed up with the lovely Bryan grin

Good posts Kalu and Meryl.

Rosie51 Thu 15-Dec-22 13:48:33

Kalu and MerylStreep no offence was intended, my remark was made very lightheartedly. It was more to tell Doodledog she'd given me an ear worm grin Not sure if I want to open your latest link Doodledog........

Which could have been one of the many who recognised the OP on her return. Not just one poster who I feel is, for some reason, being targeted.

Please, Rosie, I didn’t read your post as offensive at all.
That Doodledog is such a 👿 I’m still stuck on the first earworm and I don’t even like Bryan Ferry but don’t tell kitty🤐😃

Too tempting, I listened to this blast from the past. I do find my self repeatedly sing the line, 🎼it doesn’t matter, it doesn’t matter🎼 Very apt. 😂

Goodbyetoallthat Thu 15-Dec-22 14:01:16

Well what a mysterious thread! I clicked on it thinking it might be covering the "heady" topic of GDPR.
There may well not be an "in crowd" but when posters say things along the lines of "long time posters know all about it but we can`t tell you newer members", I can see why some posters might feel that it is the case.

kittylester Thu 15-Dec-22 14:03:23

Less competition Kalu!

I've been on GN for getting on for 10 years Goodbyetoallthat and haven't the faintest idea what this is all aboutconfused.

Grannybags Thu 15-Dec-22 14:22:34

I'll put my name on your list Bluebell

If it doesn't turn us into a clique... grin

kittylester Thu 15-Dec-22 14:26:51

I suppose it depends which threads you frequent smileless.

When gn started there were, inevitably, fewer posters and it was easy to get to know people and their posting style. Even if they left and returned with a new name.

That's what happened here! Except, another long standing poster referred back to info given by the op of this thread, under another name.

I think!

GagaJo

Yeah. Let's not making bullying public.

I don't know if that's sarcastic or not, GagaJo.

If the OP felt she was being bullied, she could have asked HQ to step in, or approached the perpetrator privately. Instead, (her choice, of course) she included the rest of us, and kept the premise of the thread very vague - of course people are going to speculate. It's human nature.

It's also understandable that in a community such as this, when it becomes obvious that some people know what's going on and others don't, when there are veiled threats about people being banned, and references to old arguments that many people (eg me grin) weren't part of, and a reference to another (presumably current?) thread about qualifications or something then of course people are going to feel excluded. Both of those things were always going to take the thread outside of the circle of people (whoever they are) involved, but that was the choice of the OP.

Are you suggesting that she shouldn't have made it public, or that people shouldn't speculate, or stop commenting, to keep it between those 'in the know'? It started about a betrayal of confidence (or appeared to), but someone (you?) brought bullying into it, effectively 'making bullying public'. Is that good or not? In your opinion?

The OP started this thread and Gagjo you have helped it along.
It reminds me of what Harry and Meghan are doing, start rumours and vague accusations and innuendo, no hard facts just speculation and causing all to wonder what they’re on about.
Just stop it.

The list is growing

Strange because I ve been on GN over 10 years and go on every day so either I walk around with my head completely in the clouds or just don’t go on the right (or wrong) threads
I don’t recognise peoples styles only if they are extreme like a elderly gentleman or a lady who used to fly a lot otherwise I just read them at face value and rarely look to see the name of the poster but more about the content of the post
So here’s to my ‘in the dark’ friends, and my ‘in the know’ friends all very Dr Seuss and all very intriguing
