Gransnet in 2024 - have your say!

Hello, everyone.

As we approach the end of the year, we at GNHQ are thinking about what we can do to improve the site for everyone in 2024. Simply put - we think we need a makeover!

What we’d really like to know is does Gransnet hit the spot, or is there something you're itching for. What features do you love, (or not) and is there a gap we need to fill? We’d also like to know if you think Gransnet reflects who you are and if not, how can we make it more ‘you’?

If you were in charge at GNHQ for the day, what changes would you make? Anything from the layout or the topics to even the name Gransnet (AI suggested ‘nananook.com' grin) - we want to hear it.

Your opinions matter to us and we’re all ears.

Thanks,
GNHQ

I'd like a "Meanwhile in Scotland" Topic for those of us North of the Border. I often see threads or comments about such topics as Benefits, Law, Power of Attorney, Politics, Education which are submitted with the assumption that it applies UK wide. However, Scottish Law is not the same as English Law, Devolved powers have resulted in major differences between the two countries eg Scottish Youngsters sit different exams, Have Free tuition at Uni, All prescriptions and social care are free, we have different Patron Saints 2 Governments and distinct Scottish Charities. We have only one combined POA, ect. ect. Advice given on GN is sometimes inappropriate for GNeters North of the border. Another gripe is that some prizes offered are London or SE Centric, meaning that a Scottish (or North of England) winner cannot enjoy them because of the need for travel and accommodation costs.

Read back what has been said on Site Stuff over the past year. And act.

I would like a ‘like’ button, too. Maybe an ‘ignore’ button for when we really don’t want to engage with someone so their posts would no longer be visible ( for the person who
asks for that only, not for others) . I’d be careful about name changes, you would lose quite a few I think. Probably me included but I am only one.

MerylStreep Mon 04-Dec-23 11:44:29

A see all facility as you have on MN. Then we could see if the problem has been resolved.
Instead, we have the situation where posters don’t read the thread when the OP has stated days before that it’s all sorted.

Nandalot Mon 04-Dec-23 11:48:16

Merylstreep, you beat me to it. A see all for OP, like on Mumsnet, so one can quickly search for any updates.

What Kitty said

BlueBelle Mon 04-Dec-23 12:06:08

Nananook for f…s sake NO NO NO I m off if that happens

Doodledog Mon 04-Dec-23 12:14:02

I would hate a 'like' button. There are too many lurkers and people who don't bother to read the thread before posting as it is. If they could just click 'like' the forums would be even slower. It might be less awful if we could all see who had liked a post, though, as anonymity online is rarely a good thing beyond user names.

Nananook is an awful name, but I suppose you could combine it with a Scottish forum and call it Nananook of the North grin. Maybe something that shows the place is aimed at over 50s, rather than 'grans' would be good?

A limited edit button would be great, but we have been asking for this for ages. What would also be good would be a response to the suggestions on this thread with reasons why things are rejected. There could well be good reasons that we don't understand, but knowing that something is technically difficult or too expensive is better than thinking that we are being ignored.

And yes to separating Games, please.

joannapiano Mon 04-Dec-23 13:09:16

Every year I have asked for the Games section to be separate, to no avail. Not holding my breath for 2024.

Calendargirl Mon 04-Dec-23 13:19:21

A new forum heading- ‘The Royal Family’ (not the tv version) or ‘The Monarchy’.

Love ‘em or hate ‘em, you can’t deny that any threads concerning the Royals generate much discussion. Better than under News or Chat.

Jaxjacky Mon 04-Dec-23 13:24:03

Edit function please, no to like button or name change.
Granny23 and Wales, Northern Ireland, extended to USA, Australia and so on? Unworkable IMO.

My thought too Jax

Just to add, it would be soooo helpful if the poster had their country next to their name. People often talk if if we know where they are, but they could be in Australia, Canada, USA or Europe. It is often relevant to their comment and therefore confusing to not know where they are.

Suki70 Mon 04-Dec-23 13:38:10

NO to Nananook! Yes to a like button and to Urmstongran’s suggestion of the ability to move from the end of one thread to another without having to scroll to the top of the page.

Mollygo Mon 04-Dec-23 13:50:58

Yes to short term edit. Even when I check, o still find I’ve put if rather than of.
No to like. You can post a smile or a thumbs up if you like a post without blocking the system or making it a competition.
Yes to being able to look back to a post when you’re writing a response. I’m good at copy and paste to save what I’ve written, but it’s a pain.

Exactly. Why start a thread like this when all you have to do is read through the suggestions that we have continually made over the years?

I am not sure anyone out here in the real world reads the articles you feature on your front page, GN. Everyone just goes straight to the conversations. If more people at HQ looked at the site from a user's point of view and spent more time reading and joining in with the conversations, they would KNOW what people are interested in/talking about and wouldn't have to keep coming back and asking, only to disregard the suggestions made.

cornergran Mon 04-Dec-23 14:10:23

Most of these have already been suggested, I’m adding my support.

Separating out News and Politics would be sensible as would a dedicated heading for the Royal Family.

A separate section for games, please.

A search facility that works.

A time limited edit button would be helpful

Would rather not have a Like button or the OP the ability to close a thread.

Having all the OPs posts in a colour would be more than helpful.

Being able to move to a previous page in a thread after beginning a response without losing what’s been typed. A memory reminder is often needed.

Casdon Mon 04-Dec-23 14:10:42

Id like to see more product reviews, and the views of Gransnetters being sought by HQ because organisations want to know what we think. There are lots of both of these on on Mumsnet, and very few on here.

PinkCosmos Mon 04-Dec-23 14:16:32

As many have already mentioned but just wanted to add to the Gnetters requesting these things:

The OP posts in a colour throughout the thread

A book of the month / book club

A like / agree button

Short time edit button

A separate games section

Separate news and politics buttons

Mizuna Mon 04-Dec-23 14:16:34

Separate Games Section please.

shysal Mon 04-Dec-23 14:24:43

I would like to say goodbye to the ancient videos which pop up in every thread.

welbeck Mon 04-Dec-23 14:24:58

segregate the games, please. pretty please.
they are not discussions.
clog up the active list.

BlueBelle Mon 04-Dec-23 14:46:59

Gransnet this is such a POINTLESS exercise you do it every year and every year it h just goes quiet with NO changes at all not ever the courage to say ‘ no w re not doing it and give a reason’
Totally pointless

Pittcity Mon 04-Dec-23 14:55:53

shysal

I would like to say goodbye to the ancient videos which pop up in every thread.

I agree. The pop up ads are just a nuisance.
I was a model for the make up video that was made many years ago.
I used to test products for Gransnet too.
There are none of these opportunities any more.

Theexwife Mon 04-Dec-23 14:57:57

Separate Games section,
No edit function, there is already preview.
Highlight OP through out thread.
