Gransnet in 2024 - have your say!

Hello, everyone.

As we approach the end of the year, we at GNHQ are thinking about what we can do to improve the site for everyone in 2024. Simply put - we think we need a makeover!

What we’d really like to know is does Gransnet hit the spot, or is there something you're itching for. What features do you love, (or not) and is there a gap we need to fill? We’d also like to know if you think Gransnet reflects who you are and if not, how can we make it more ‘you’?

If you were in charge at GNHQ for the day, what changes would you make? Anything from the layout or the topics to even the name Gransnet (AI suggested ‘nananook.com' grin) - we want to hear it.

Your opinions matter to us and we’re all ears.

Thanks,
GNHQ

Separate games section
The ability, having started to type a message to be able to return to check something on previous pages without losing what you had just written. (Currently I do this by typing on Safari and checking on Google.

(Realise that things vary when using an iPad from what happens when using a laptop)

Separate the games section

Highlight the OP throughout the thread, as in Mumsnet.

Have a sentence/punishment or whatever you call it, then wipe the slate clean. As someone who was (wrongly) accused of an insult to another poster, then subsequently re-instated (without apology, I may add), I know that one wrong comment and I am off for good. It is unfair to be forever afraid of the third strike in three strikes and you are out. After a set period, slates should be wiped clean.

A big NO to 'nananook'.

Charleygirl5 Mon 04-Dec-23 15:42:06

I agree totally with HousePlantQueen I feel I would be better treated in a court of law than by you guys, punished for life.

Reading the name Nannanook I immediately added ie at the end. If you changed to that ghastly name you would not see me for dust.

We have asked for years for a separate Games section but it never happens, little ever does except perhaps lose more GNs.

Millie22 Mon 04-Dec-23 15:46:49

I don't think the name needs to be changed but the format does.

There are too many forums so they need reducing. Often some of them have no comments on at all.

The colour option on MN needs to be on GN as well so you can quickly see a thread you have previously looked at.

There's quite a lot could be improved.

fancythat

Read back what has been said on Site Stuff over the past year. And act.

This.

We keep being asked what we’d like but nothing ever changes

silverlining48 Mon 04-Dec-23 16:03:43

Some long standing threads never seem to get into the active page, or if they do it’s already 3/4 of the way down the page. Keep complaining without success
OP s posts highlighted
Games in a different section

Nananook!
Pleeease, you’ve got to be kidding.
Sounds patronising, silly and excludes men.
If that’s what AI is going to be like God help us.

Exactly right LauraNorder

Pre COVID and lockdowns , Gransnet ran some really good competitions, including book of the month.
I actually happily won a few books.
It would be lovely to see these competitions back . 😊

granfromafar Mon 04-Dec-23 16:20:46

Agree with Pittcity, bring back competitions and book of the month. Used to love applying for and occasionally receiving the book.

winterwhite Mon 04-Dec-23 16:22:21

Agree with:
- no name change
- separate forum for games
- separate forum for royal family (but news & politics to stay as one - too many discussions would overlap if separate)

Also:
- no ads under Search. This is a v. useful tool but not user friendly.
- see no particular reason for aiming to attract more men - plenty of places where they can express their opinions, what is wrong with a forum for grandmothers?
- am often puzzled by the way some threads attract hordes of posters with unfamiliar names who instantly disappear again. Something rather disquieting about the idea of umpteen 'lurkers' lurking for months on end, if that is what causes this.

kittylester Mon 04-Dec-23 16:22:27

I agree about competitions and product testing. We also had some chats with various well known people. Really enjoyed those.

Tizliz Mon 04-Dec-23 16:29:54

Could sort out the forums. E.g. Classics, don’t know what it is for and there are only 10 posts.

Another vote to move games off active/last day etc

Those Q&As and chats with celebs were great. I particularly liked Des O’Connor and Jules Hudson.

Definitely no name change. Especially the awful Nanook !

Separate games forum.

A decent search option.

OP’s posts colour marked.

Thank you.

Classics could be better used, but it is for threads that people want to go back to because they have useful information, or because they were particularly entertaining.

Galaxy Mon 04-Dec-23 18:03:39

No to a like button I couldnt think of anything worse.
The search facility never works for me and it does on MN so it would be good if that worked.

joannapiano Mon 04-Dec-23 18:28:05

I forgot about the lovely books I sometimes used to win, then posting a short review !

toscalily Mon 04-Dec-23 18:30:37

No to Nananook, terrible name.

Separate Games forum, depending on the day and time the active thread seems to consist of only games, takes forever to scroll through them all.

OP to be in the same colour throughout the thread.

Short term edit button.

Search facility that works.

Get rid of the ghastly old video's

It would be nice to think we could get some of these things as every year we get asked our opinion but nothing changes. Gransnet is looking rather tired and old fashioned and definitely in need of a revamp.

BlueBelle Mon 04-Dec-23 18:38:42

Looks like as always it the same half dozen or less things that are asked for
The same ever since I ve been on here probably 11 or more years AND not one has ever been allowed
This is a totally pointless operation unless you are going to listen and make some small changes

Kandinsky Mon 04-Dec-23 19:58:08

We already have a separate games forum - what we want is the facility to hide entire forums like they have on mumsnet.

Doodledog Mon 04-Dec-23 20:04:12

I think that by 'separate' people mean that Games wouldn't show up on Active Topics. They can clog the page, particularly at night.

Galaxy Mon 04-Dec-23 20:12:35

I always feel sorry for the games people when this topic comes upsad

Oldnproud Mon 04-Dec-23 20:37:01

-Edit facility
-'like' button,
-The thing that Mumsnet has where you can opt to see all of a poster's updates on a thread they have initiated.

As for nananook, no way!

Kandinsky Mon 04-Dec-23 21:03:13

Basically -,make GN the same as MN.
