Why has a thread about the banning of a poster been deleted?

(78 Posts)

GNHQ have commented on this thread. Read here.

It was on the News and Politics forum.

Was it because of the subject or because it was in the wrong place?

We have had threads in the past about banned or suspended posters which haven’t been deleted. What is the difference this time?

GrannyGravy13 Fri 10-Oct-25 09:10:10

It just had a message indicating that the discussion was against gransnet guidelines

Galaxy Fri 10-Oct-25 09:12:11

Well there were people accusing moderators of bias and behaving unprofessionally, as they are actually real people my guess is GN likes to protect its staff.
Also in my experience they do delete threads about missing posters because the missing poster can't respond to anything being said about them. The one time I was deleted was because I said something about a male poster who was banned.

I dunno MaisieD, probably because it was turning into the polarised ‘discussion’ characteristic of the N and P forum.

I’m sorry WWM will not be on GN anymore. I enjoyed her contributions to other forums, not just N and P.

Waterloosunset Fri 10-Oct-25 09:14:57

Sorry I didn't see your thread. I can have mine removed. Not sure how...report it?

BlueBelle Fri 10-Oct-25 09:15:39

Leave it on Waterloo why should an intelligent poster be wiped from view

MayBee70 Fri 10-Oct-25 09:22:49

I think HQ should explain to us why exactly one of the most respected people on this forum has been banned.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Fri 10-Oct-25 09:28:49

I think it must be “different mods, different rules’ as it doesn’t seem fair to allow pages of support for some posters yet not others.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 10-Oct-25 09:29:19

WWM2 needs to message gransnet or mumsnet directly to appeal her banishment.

Other posters have been reinstated this way.

Just as I was about to post on the removed thread too ...... always get left behind along the way! 😆

From where are posters in the know here able to recount the many vindictive campaigns, pile ons or team sabotaging against Whitewavemark2 taking place? I can't see any happening.
Are they counting everytime a poster with different views from WWM2 writes, "I agree" alongside a post and thereby wrongly thinking there is a collectively orchestrated campaign against her? I don't see ganging up on and bullying of WWM2 happening, but if she felt she were being targeted, then surely she would say so? She was certainly articulate enough I would have thought.

Personally I think all the comments about being on a particular side on GN are detrimental and silly. I don't like it, but then I know it isn't true for me because I engage quite happily on frivolous threads with posters I disagree with on N & P.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Fri 10-Oct-25 09:38:31

I imagine the mods will delete this thread soon anyway.

escaped Fri 10-Oct-25 09:38:53

PS. There has been a lot of mocking people for their other interests, cleverly disguised in the N & P threads, recently. As though these posters making the observations are intellectually superior. I believe several of them discussed leaving GN for a better forum with more intelligent discussion. 😆

This in itself serves to divide posters, and I don't like that.

KellyGransnet (GNHQ) Fri 10-Oct-25 09:46:28

Hi everyone,

Just a quick note — we don’t really like to host discussions about individual posters. It’s not fair to talk about someone who isn’t here to join the conversation, and these kinds of threads can easily drift into personal or heated territory.

For that reason, we’ve removed the recent thread discussing WWM2. As a reminder, we also don’t go into details of any moderation actions or suspension or bans publicly, though we're always happy to discuss things behind the scenes with the poster concerned.

We understand people may have opinions about the issues that were raised. If you’d like to continue talking about the topic (rather than the individual), please start a new thread that focuses on the ideas, not the person.

Thanks for keeping things civil and respectful.

FriedGreenTomatoes2

I imagine the mods will delete this thread soon anyway.

Which would be very odd because, as you noted upthread, other similar threads have been allowed to run.

I feel that either the mods have confused her with someone else, or an unknown poster has been running a nasty campaign against her.

I've always regarded her as a polite and well informed contributor.

MaizieD Fri 10-Oct-25 09:52:27

Sorry, KellyGransnet, but other threads about other 'missing' posters have been allowed to run. Moderation isn't very consistent.

Galaxy Fri 10-Oct-25 09:56:26

It likely means no one will have reported those ones. It's a self moderating site if you know what i mean. As I said, I have first-hand experience of being deleted for talking about a missing poster ( not WW)

KellyGransnet (GNHQ) Fri 10-Oct-25 09:59:29

Hi @MaizieD,

We aim to be as consistent as we can, but we have to allow for nuance.

In this case, the thread was specifically focused on an individual and was starting to get heated, and we were receiving multiple reports about it, so we felt it was best to remove it. Our general approach is to avoid hosting discussions about other posters, especially when they can’t respond.

We do our best to apply that consistently, though sometimes threads evolve in different ways before we step in. Thanks for your understanding.

fancythat Fri 10-Oct-25 10:04:18

I have no idea what has been going on.
I have barely posted for days.
No idea what topic or thread has been problematic.

fancythat Fri 10-Oct-25 10:05:09

Posted this before seeing the GN comment above.

escaped Fri 10-Oct-25 10:07:31

Thank you, KellyGransnet, I understand. I'm happy to have my first comment on here with the name deleted.

Maremia Fri 10-Oct-25 10:10:04

Would really be helpful if we knew the sort of points that would be relevant to help re-instate banned Posters.

Blinko Fri 10-Oct-25 10:10:15

WWM2 will be missed. I hope she comes back in whatever guise very soon...

Maremia Fri 10-Oct-25 10:11:53

Some suggestions have been made, thanks.
I was interested in GGs suggestion that maybe Posters should be informed about reports being made against them.

escaped Fri 10-Oct-25 10:12:23

It's the ideas we should be discussing here, not any one poster. So here goes again, with the name changed and a personal observation taken out....... ......

Just as I was about to post on the removed thread too ...... always get left behind along the way! 😆

And there’s your answer, OP.
The empowerment of the report button!!
