Why has a thread about the banning of a poster been deleted?

(79 Posts)

GNHQ have commented on this thread. Read here.

It was on the News and Politics forum.

Was it because of the subject or because it was in the wrong place?

We have had threads in the past about banned or suspended posters which haven’t been deleted. What is the difference this time?

I am so sorry WhiteWaveMark is banned. Her ideas were well thought out and informative. Her poetic name was a pleasure too.

Gransnet moderation methods are scary.

Maremia Fri 10-Oct-25 10:14:35

So, if you are 'easy going' and don't report, it doesn't mean that other Posters will show you the same respect.

Do you think people should be always be respected, but their ideas may be freely abused?

Maremia Fri 10-Oct-25 10:21:01

We don't all agree, but we should respond with respect.

I agree!
(But, just to be clear), I am not in your gang, or clique!)

Iam64 Fri 10-Oct-25 10:23:23

I may misunderstand Maremia’s point but, I suspect she’s suggesting that group known as some posters are more likely to react by pressing report, than others are

Maremia Fri 10-Oct-25 10:23:41

This happens a lot on particular threads, you put forward a contradictory point and immediately there is an attempt at conflation. As if you have to be this, to be saying that. That is not respectful.

Galaxy Fri 10-Oct-25 10:25:50

I am not the slightest bit scared by MN moderation, it is the least scariest bit of the Internet I know.

Maremia Fri 10-Oct-25 10:26:20

Yes, it looks from what I can see, that perhaps some folk with a strong point of view will react more 'strongly' to any rebuttal of their position.

Maremia Fri 10-Oct-25 10:26:57

If that's not clear, I'll have another go at explaining.

Maremia Fri 10-Oct-25 10:27:38

I know, Galaxy, Facebook can be brutal.

Maremia Fri 10-Oct-25 10:28:34

It is not abuse to disagree, and to then explain why.

Galaxy Fri 10-Oct-25 10:31:12

But people won't be deleted for disagreeing.
If I said I think capitalism is a force for good.
And you said no it isn't it causes inequality. There would be no deletions.
If you said stop talking absolute rubbish galaxy, you are an idiot. Deletion if I reported.

Galaxy Fri 10-Oct-25 10:33:45

Or actually deletion if anyone reported. Doesn't have to be the person who was called an idiot.

Maremia Fri 10-Oct-25 10:36:32

And it could also be a Shadow

Maremia Fri 10-Oct-25 10:41:13

We had some suggestions on the previous thread about how to facilitate a return.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Fri 10-Oct-25 10:48:03

Stuck in my mind that a few years back a poster came on who admitted “I never post on GN I just read the threads but I do report if I see fit.”

So maybe folk on here who deny reporting are telling the truth. Posts can be randomly reported by anyone.

I just wish they wouldn’t but hey ho.

Galaxy Fri 10-Oct-25 10:52:03

FGT please don't answer this if u don't want to, but did you talk to GNHQ when you were 'absent', did they let you know what had happened.
I know every time I have been deleted they explained why.

eddiecat78 Fri 10-Oct-25 10:52:04

Just wondering - if you were banned would you want to come back?
If it happened to me I wouldn't want anything more to do with the forum that banned me.

Kandinsky Fri 10-Oct-25 10:58:10

It doesn’t matter how many times you report a particular poster ( speaking generally here ) HQ will not delete their posts ( & eventually ban them ) if they’re not doing anything wrong.
HQ will not say ‘ok, we better ban Kandinsky because 10 people have reported her today, even though she only asked what time coronation street is on’ - posts will only be deleted if they’ve broken the rules.
I don’t know how many posts you need deleted before you’re banned. But I guess you can get an immediate ban if you post something extremely offensive.

kittylester Fri 10-Oct-25 11:05:29

Offensive in whose eyes though?

foxie48 Fri 10-Oct-25 11:09:52

I've never reported a post tbh if I think it's a bit "iffy" I'd rather it stand so others can decide for themselves. I was recently deleted for the first time but it wasn't explained why, it just said it didn't follow guidelines, another poster was also deleted very soon after I think for the same comment so probably reported by the same member. I was very confused as it was a direct question to a poster which wasn't answered IMO it was neither aggressive or improper but someone took offence.
We do seem to have many more posts being deleted and members suspended or banned recently. I wonder why? There's always been contentious subjects discussed but I don't remember this happening in the past. It's such a shame as it can curb active discussion but perhaps that's why it's being done.

Yes I did Galaxy by email.

Would really be helpful if we knew the sort of points that would be relevant to help re-instate banned Posters.

I think I suggested contacting GNHQ by email or reporting that thread to bring posters' concerns about the ban to their attention, Maremia.
Apologies if that was the wrong advice.

It's the ideas we should be discussing here, not any one poster. So here goes again, with the name changed and a personal observation taken out....... ......

Just as I was about to post on the removed thread too ...... always get left behind along the way! 😆

From where are posters in the know here able to recount the manyvindictive campaigns, pile onsorteam sabotagingagainst XYZ taking place? I can't see any happening.
Are they counting everytime a poster with different views from XYZ writes, "I agree" alongside a post and thereby wrongly thinking there is a collectively orchestrated campaign against her? I don't see ganging up on and bullying of XYZ happening, but if she felt she were being targeted, then surely she would say so?

Personally I think all the comments about beingon a particular sideon GN are detrimental and silly. I don't like it, but then I know it isn't true for me because I engage quite happily on frivolous threads with posters I disagree with on N & P.

I do remember a pile-on and a lot of bullying of another banned poster who had a large dog.

The strange thing was that there was a sudden surge of posters with unfamiliar names who were doing some of the bullying, then the dog-owner was banned, never to return.

It all seemed rather sinister.
