Why has a thread about the banning of a poster been deleted?

(79 Posts)

GNHQ have commented on this thread. Read here.

It was on the News and Politics forum.

Was it because of the subject or because it was in the wrong place?

We have had threads in the past about banned or suspended posters which haven’t been deleted. What is the difference this time?

Thanks fgt.

Stuck in my mind that a few years back a poster came on who admitted “I never post on GN I just read the threads but I do report if I see fit.”

So maybe folk on here who deny reporting are telling the truth. Posts can be randomly reported by anyone.

I just wish they wouldn’t but hey ho.

I remember that!

Yes, it looks from what I can see, that perhaps some folk with a strong point of view will react more 'strongly' to any rebuttal of their position.

Agree with that.....some people have gotten a bit "strong" in their wording sometimes and it starts to feel "personal" when they do....

Oh yes, the big dog poster certainly received pile ons from people we'd never heard of before.
Interestingly, that that was at the same time that several others, myself included, were deleted or removed from GN. I could not re enter despite sending emails. It was all quite sinister but what do I know?

Does anyone think it might help if the private message facility was removed?

Maybe if everything was open to scrutiny.

Though I have used it recently 😳

No, because I received a private explanation/apology from a poster immediately after a post they'd written, which could have implicated me.
We cleared the air, how could we have done that otherwise? Derailing the thread was not our intention.

I can’t be the only member who wouldn’t/ doesn’t get offended if another member told me I’m talking b#**#@&s or am I. 😂
I don’t know you. I wouldn’t give it another thought.

I agree I actually couldn't care less if someone says well that's a load of nonsense, isn't it. At times they will be right.

Whitewave3 has been reinstated…. See on Chat!

I don't report people. To me it's a bit drastic. I have had some dubious posts directed at me but leave them for others to see.
I would hate to be the cause of someone being banned.

Aldom Fri 10-Oct-25 12:03:39

A new thread about Christmas cards has just started.
A poster whose user name is Whitewavermark2 has posted on the thread.
Is this the same person people are talking about here?

Jaxjacky Fri 10-Oct-25 12:04:25

WW has been reinstated see thank you thread.

Aldom Fri 10-Oct-25 12:06:00

Thanks Jax😀

Kandinsky

It doesn’t matter how many times you report a particular poster ( speaking generally here ) HQ will not delete their posts ( & eventually ban them ) if they’re not doing anything wrong.
HQ will not say ‘ok, we better ban Kandinsky because 10 people have reported her today, even though she only asked what time coronation street is on’ - posts will only be deleted if they’ve broken the rules.
I don’t know how many posts you need deleted before you’re banned. But I guess you can get an immediate ban if you post something extremely offensive.

It’s on at 8pm 😂😂

Galaxy Fri 10-Oct-25 12:13:20

I don't like the way you said that Beechnutgrin

Also there are some thing that are better discussed in a PM than on open forum. For instance, if several people are planning to meet up somewhere, they may have details to arrange, such as one of them giving another a lift from their home to the venue, and needing the exact address, or plans about sharing finances.

Lathyrus3 Fri 10-Oct-25 13:37:44

Yes, I can see there are good uses for private messages. Like I said, I recently sent one.

It just I think they are sometimes used to create a “gang” of “.isn’t x awful” members. Which some might be less scrupulous in using to dominate a thread?

MayBee70 Fri 10-Oct-25 13:43:24

All the other forums I’m on have a pm facility so why should it not be allowed on here. They also allow people to amend*or remove their posts but it seems gransnetters aren’t responsible enough to do that…
*even though it might allow people to remove something they may regret posting or amend it if they think they didn’t make the point they were making clear enough.

Definitely not.

I have exchanged email address and phone number with a couple of GN members who I meet up with, I wouldn’t put these details on a public forum!

Smileless2012 Fri 10-Oct-25 14:28:34

Some GN's have my contact details and I theirs, also in the past I've exchanged pm's with new posters until they've felt able to post on the estrangement forum.
