Mumsnet to be sold. I presume Gransnet too.

Well part sold.
An online article yesterday.
I presume Gransnet would be part of the package.

Justine would be still on the Board but lose control.

Yes, I read that. It filled me with trepidation. We are small beer compared with mumsnet, and dispensible.

Galaxy Sun 01-Feb-26 20:43:22

Aargh. That's not good.

fancythat Sun 01-Feb-26 20:48:24

I hadnt even thought about the "dispensible" bit.

Galaxy Sun 01-Feb-26 20:50:39

I am not worried about that particularly, I am worried that Justine has been incredible in terms of allowing all discussion and fighting for free speech when necessary.

fancythat Sun 01-Feb-26 21:01:08

You mean on Mumsnet?
I am rarely on there so wouldnt really know.

petra Sun 01-Feb-26 21:06:20

Ask yourself ( no one in particular) would you buy GN as a going concern. I wouldn’t.

fancythat Sun 01-Feb-26 21:12:01

Sadly, dont think so.

fancyflowers Sun 01-Feb-26 21:14:48

Oh no, I hope Gransnet will be safe. I often feel that people on here are kind and offer great advice. Maybe because we are older and have more wisdom/ compassion because we have endured many of life's misfortunes.

Casdon Sun 01-Feb-26 21:17:24

Gransnet is part of Mumsnet, so it isn’t going to be sold off as a going concern. Mumsnet is in healthy profit, and they want to expand internationally. It’s worth reading the article before getting into negative thinking about what the future might hold. It could well be better.

fancythat Sun 01-Feb-26 21:20:13

^ It could well be better.^

What do you think may be improved?

It seems to be thought that it may get sold to an american company or individual.

Given that most gransnetters think the US is not something great at all, what might "they", whoever "they" are, do?

I think an accountant would see that MN has been subsidising
GN for a long time.

kittylester Sun 01-Feb-26 21:32:42

That's the worry, Petra.

Casdon Sun 01-Feb-26 21:33:28

All it says about future plans in the article is

‘Among the new products it referred to was the launch of MumsGPT, an AI-driven consumer insights tool.

One source said the sale of a stake in the business was expected to provide capital to facilitate an international expansion
strategy for Mumsnet.’

Gransnet as a platform could certainly do with updating, as it regularly crashes, and to thrive it needs better functionality and more participants. I enjoy the involvement of participants from overseas , and as on Mumsnet main site, it could be organised into chat groups specific to people’s needs. I like Gransnet as it is, but like everything, if it doesn’t move on it gets stale.

There is huge power in the grey pound though, and there are not many other platforms to gather the MumsGPT intelligence they want, so I think that will protect Gransnet.

Couldn’t agree more 👍
I like the idea that Justine wants to go international.

petra Sun 01-Feb-26 22:02:53

Casdon
If the grey pound is so powerful where are the advertisements?
All I ever see is Temu.
As for MumsGPT intelligence, they have a 6 billion word content.
Of course GN has a lot of useful content but a great deal of it is irrelevant to MN members. Average age 25- 45.

Casdon Sun 01-Feb-26 22:18:15

Isn’t that because the potential hasn’t been developed though petra? Gransnet is already part of Mumsnet, and I would think that it would be a shared GPT system. The ‘worst’ that could happen is that there would be a Gransnet section as part of the main Mumsnet site I think - and as there are plenty of older people on Mumsnet anyway, that might work well, or not, it would have to happen for us to know.

It’s a bigger challenge drawing men in to either Mumsnet, or Gransnet. I think it’s mainly because most men aren’t chatters in the same way women are. They are more drawn to subject specific sites and talk about their hobbies etc there.

Oh!!
Depends who buys us.

I do see adverts, petra but they are probably more relevant to Mumsnet than Gransnet.

That does not mean I want to see adverts for funeral plans.

I hadnt even thought about the "dispensible" bit.

Will Elon Musk put in a bid, I wonder, and if successful will he make it as liberal, democratic and dignified as his current mouthpiece X?

Ha! Ha! Just joking.

nanna8 Mon 02-Feb-26 06:29:10

Maybe it will get more people from different countries which could give a wider perspective . I don’t get ads. but I think I have an ad blocker. Whatever will be will be I suppose.

karmalady Mon 02-Feb-26 06:36:11

Progress I suppose. Could well be the impetus I need to leave and regain the time I spend

It might be like the cadbury sale, an excellent brand was ruined. I like being UK focused but I will jump ship if it does get taken over and spread globally

SORES Mon 02-Feb-26 07:34:32

Mumsnet has not been the same since it was monetised

I find it hard to believe 8million viewers a month.

For Gransnet, Going global will remove the intimacy essential for many of the posts and responses often of a very personal nature.

SORES Mon 02-Feb-26 07:35:30

This site needs updating, the ‘fashion’ especially.
