We've been asked by L'Oreal to find out from gransnetters about beauty tips that have been passed between the generations.

So, what beauty tips did you get from your mother? Maybe she had some great skincare tips that you've followed for years? Or perhaps you have some beauty tips that you've shared with your daughter? Or maybe some tips that you definitely won't be handing down!

Whatever your top tips are - L'Oreal would love to hear about them!

Everyone who adds a comment to this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one winner will receive a L'Oreal goodie bag worth £200.

Please note your anonymous comments may be included on L'Oreal's social media channels, and possibly elsewhere, so please only post if you're comfortable with this.

I tell everyone to use sunscreen!! I didn't use it enough when I was younger & ended up with some pigmented skin on my face. In hindsight I would have look after my skin more so that It looked younger now! I have had a great treatment to help it look better but I swear by sunscreen now

My 93 year old Mum has never used soap on her face. Just a warm, damp flannel. Followed by Ponds cold cream. She still looks amazing. No one can believe her age

My mum always said to wear colours that suit me, make up and clothes, and not to follow fashion and fads!

I kind of ignored her really!! I like to change my style and colour and I am happy to try new things - who cares if you don't quite pull it off, just try something else!

My Gran swore by Oil of Ulay moisturising fluid and she had lovely soft skin into her nineties. My mum always tells me to not worry about what you wash your face with- she uses whatever soap is on offer, but is adamant a good moisturiser morning and night is the key to youthful skin.
She always eats lots of carrots as she swears they re great for her skin too & no, she hasn't turned orange yet!

Don't clart on make up! (if you're not Scottish that means don't overdo it - less is more!) smile

I have passed on to my daughters to always remove make up before sleep and to moisturise, moisturise and moisturise!

My mother always stressed the importance of 'cleanse, tone & nourish'. People often mistook her for my sister so it certainly worked! It is a routine I have always followed.

My mum told me to always look my best...because you never know who you might bump into !! This was over 50 years ago and it proved to be the best advice last year when Prince Charles was visiting our town ...I was among the huge crowd and to my surprise he made a beeline for me..and I gave him a peck on the cheek !!

Never go to bed without removing your make up, drink lots of water, get lots of sleep and cleanse tone and moisturise every morning and evening.

My mum always said to never forget about moisturising your neck too when you do your face, as along with the hands the neck can really show age. So for that matter always use hand cream, wear gloves in the winter. She is also partial to the old egg white face mask, I must admit my skin feels better after one and I'm always told I dont look my age!

Never use soap on your face ..it dries the skin out.I am 64 and have only ever washed my face in cold water and people comment on how good my skin looks.

My mother always told me to never use soap on your face, wish i had listened to that advise, as after using soap and hot water on my face i was plagued with blocked pores and spots sad

crysta Fri 20-Feb-15 08:44:21

my mother always used Boots Cold cream for removing makeup, her skin was lovely and soft right into old age

WendySmith3 Fri 20-Feb-15 10:56:08

Drink plenty of water and get 8 hours sleep every night, beauty comes from within

GeorgeW Fri 20-Feb-15 13:25:56

Moisturise every time you get your skin wet so after a shower/bath & washing hands.

Smother your feet in vaseline pop on some cotton sock before bedtime and in the morning hey presto beautiful soft feet!

fitwell Fri 20-Feb-15 14:18:36

my mother advised me always to wash my hair in rainwater , don`t know wether I`d be inclined to these days, she sau her mother only washed her hair every couple of weeks to maintain the natural oils in the hair

shscc Fri 20-Feb-15 14:20:24

My mother used to swear by slices of raw potato for bags and dark circles around the eyes.

Also, for blemished skin she used to grate raw potato and use it like a face mask.

I have tried both and they do work (but not a quick fix, as you do have to keep them on for around an hour, though!).

chezvic Fri 20-Feb-15 14:37:03

She always told me not to bother with expensive moisturisers as they all pretty much do the same job - my Mum uses Astral on her face and looks really young, my sister uses Oil of Olay and her skin is amazing too. My cream of choice is Nivea so I hope it works wink

sweir1 Fri 20-Feb-15 14:59:19

My mother always taught me to look my best even when in hospital giving birth!

xxxxclarexxxx Fri 20-Feb-15 15:40:09

my mum always told me use oil of ulay before it changed to olay - i tried it and brought me out in massive spotty rash! and my nan told me once how to make your hair soft with lemon and a few baking ingredients - i rushed home to try - wished i never turned my hair into a big tatty frizzy mess i has to cut half of it of! best thing to pass on is taking off your make really does make a difference only i figured that old too late! ha! x
