We've been asked by L'Oreal to find out from gransnetters about beauty tips that have been passed between the generations.

So, what beauty tips did you get from your mother? Maybe she had some great skincare tips that you've followed for years? Or perhaps you have some beauty tips that you've shared with your daughter? Or maybe some tips that you definitely won't be handing down!

Whatever your top tips are - L'Oreal would love to hear about them!

Everyone who adds a comment to this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one winner will receive a L'Oreal goodie bag worth £200.

Please note your anonymous comments may be included on L'Oreal's social media channels, and possibly elsewhere, so please only post if you're comfortable with this.

The best advice I got was, smoking will age you faster than anything and make sure you wash your makeup off (and the makeup remover with warm water)

HEAVENLY HAIR

To strengthen hair massage olive oil into the scalp. I now use brazil nut oil, Cover with hot towels and leave for a couple of hours or wrap in shower cap and leave overnight. Shampoo to remove oil and add a small quantity of vinegar or lemon juice in the final rinse. Repeat twice a week.

My mum always told me to remove all my makeup before going to bed, although I would like to attribute her kind words for the sake of keeping my skin nice and healthy, me thinks it was more to do with not having to wash the make-up smeared pillowcases every day!

My mum said that you should never have long hair after the age of 40 as its very ageing - I am now over 40 and have long hair and I am quite confident that she was wrong!!!

As you get older less is more as far as foundation goes. Don't slap it on, apply it lightly. And accentuate eyes OR lips, never both!

Always take your make up off before bed. Thats my tip. I usually stick to it. Usually!!

My best beauty advice to my 2 daughters is to always wear a daily sun protection and they have from that day to this.... This is also the best beauty advice to anyone who wants to keep beautiful skin smile)

My mother's advice was, like so many others, to keep the make-up light and natural and to use lemon juice (for blondes), and beer or vinegar (for brunettes) in the final hair rinse. I used to follow this, but haven't for some years - perhaps I might give it a try next time I wash my hair. She also advised a beaten raw egg as an occasional conditioner - I only did this once as I didn't rinse it properly, used a hairdryer, and ended up picking scrambled egg out of my hair for days.

My grandmother's advice was to use rainwater to wash your hair - she had a rain butt and the water in it was so soft and clean. I can't imagine with all the pollution we have now that this would be a good idea!

Mine to my daughters was always to wear a bra in bed to avoid sagging in later life - this was passed on to me by a midwife 34 years ago and I must say, it seems to be working so far. Whether my daughters listened to me? - well, I suppose time will tell.... smile

Daughter in law (who always looks stunning)says when having photo taken put tongue to roof of mouth which slims your double chin, try it, it works!

I've always told my girls to use spf15 or higher foundation or suntan lotion. I wish I'd also been told to put it on my hands aswell as that's where the sun has done most damage for me.

My mum always told me, when applying my mascara to always have a earbud handy as any mascara gets caught on eye-lids. This has really helped me so much! Thanks mom XoXo

Another tip my mum let me in on, is when putting my hair up into a bun or a ponytail to always have a toothbrush & hairspray handy as when bits of hair falls out from a up do, just spray the hairspray on toothbrush and then stroke to the in where hair has fell out then no more ehispy bits

My mother taught me to keep my skin soft and smooth by moisturising after bath/shower smile

Always get plenty of sleep and remove all make up before going to bed.

ramk99 Sun 22-Feb-15 09:17:10

Use eye cream! I wish I'd stuck to that when I was younger!

barnettfair Sun 22-Feb-15 13:24:23

My mum was from the era of Ponds 'Vanishing Cream' which she used every day - as a young child I found the name very funny and perplexing! I can remember giggling at it over and over. Probably if I were to smell that cream now it would smell just like my mum!

She always did her eyebrows and lipstick and I must have inherited that trait as I would agree now that my eyebrow pencil and lipgloss are my most basic can't do without items. She did have remarkably good skin when she passed away at 93 - though not a smoker nor a sunbather - so maybe good genes and good lifestyle rather than all that 'Vanishing' cream!?

Kangakate Sun 22-Feb-15 14:22:12

Always take your make up off before going to bed and carry vaseline with you, it can be used not only to soften lips, but to highlight cheeks, smooth over eyebrows and soften any dry areas

Smoosh Sun 22-Feb-15 14:24:47

My mum always told me to take my makeup off before bed.

Ritaleeds Sun 22-Feb-15 15:54:19

I always tell my DD's to take their make-up off before going to bed & moisturise morning & night. We all use Liz Earle now & have been for the last 4/5 years - probably the best beauty product available & natural as well.

topcatz Sun 22-Feb-15 16:41:29

Stay out of the sun and moisturize well every night, although bless her she could never afford anything decent. My tip to my daughter is to buy the very best moisturizer you can as it is the investment product for the future.

rabbitfeet Sun 22-Feb-15 16:54:37

I always remember Mums Pink Bottle of 'Oil of Ulay', she never had any other beauty items & her only make up was a Heather Shimmer Lipstick.
I remember her saying not to forget your neck & that piece of advice has stuck with me. Thanks Mum xxx

cluckyhen0 Sun 22-Feb-15 17:24:21

My mother never gave me any advice but my gran always told me that beauty is not at the bottom of the make up bag. She also told me to rinse my hair in cold water for frizz free shine

emziemay Sun 22-Feb-15 18:29:23

My mum always said use beaten eggs as a hair conditioner. I have done when I've run out of conditioner but would work out quite expensive I think if used all the time!

poleybear Sun 22-Feb-15 19:12:12

My mum told me to take make-up off before bed & always moisturise. She also told me her aunt moisturised her face with lard ( there wasn't a lot of choice in those days) & she had lovely skin. Never tried it myself!
