We've been asked by L'Oreal to find out from gransnetters about beauty tips that have been passed between the generations.

So, what beauty tips did you get from your mother? Maybe she had some great skincare tips that you've followed for years? Or perhaps you have some beauty tips that you've shared with your daughter? Or maybe some tips that you definitely won't be handing down!

Whatever your top tips are - L'Oreal would love to hear about them!

Everyone who adds a comment to this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one winner will receive a L'Oreal goodie bag worth £200.

Please note your anonymous comments may be included on L'Oreal's social media channels, and possibly elsewhere, so please only post if you're comfortable with this.

my mum says, moisturise your skin to keep it from drying, always works for me!

DM always said, moisturise - doesn't matter how expensive the cream is, just use it. I passed that on to DD but added, always include your neck when you do your face. (Hard-learned lesson, that.)

DM always smelt wonderful, French perfume doing its thing, and I got the message. DD hasn't much of a sense of smell, so sticks to pleasant body lotions to be safe.

I have passed on the importance of, and I see DD is certainly using on DGS, serious sun screen, after allowing for the 20 minute vitamin D spell before the sun gets too hot.

I have always took good care of my skin since my early teens, keeping it moisturised morning & night and using products with at least SPF 15 for protection against the sun, taking make up off before going to bed etc. Both my daughters are aware of the importance of good skincare.

The best thing my mum passed on was her good genes for lovely skin!

My mother told me to use Witch Hazel on my face and eyelids every day for clear skin. I do and it works!

My mother's so called tip makes me laugh when I think of it. She would apply lipstick to her bottom lip and then rub her lips together without applying any directly to the top lip. Perhaps it was a way of saving on the cost of a new lipstick.

Pond's cream would, apparently (according to my mother) work for every part of everyone.

Mmmm, I have my doubts but my mother did look good into her eighties.

Now, where's that tub of Pond's cream.....?

My mother always told me to massage in your night cream for two minutes before you go to sleep, then put on an extra thin layer. It worked for her and seems to be working for me.

Never leave the house without make up and smile! My mother's only beauty tip!

Mandyinad Fri 13-Feb-15 17:59:30

My Mum told me to cleanse, tone & moisturise every day, since I was a teenager, using gentle upward strokes. And always removed make-up before going to bed. She had wonderful soft skin in her 90's, I hope mine will be the same.

Grandmama Fri 13-Feb-15 18:02:47

My mother didn't give me any beauty tips!

Spidergran Fri 13-Feb-15 18:26:32

My mother always taught me to check my eyebrows just before leaving the house and a quick spit on the finger and then wipe across the eyebrow kept stray hairs in place. She always did this to us as children with her finger and it was horrible to feel her wet spit across your eyebrows begining to stiffen! She could do it in the blink of an eye so there was no escape!!

My mum has great skin for her age and always told me to moisturise and use a good sunscreen.

My Mother who died when she was 84 had hardly a wrinkle on her face !
For as long as I can remember she took an egg cup half filled with olive oil to bed with her. After washing her face she massaged this into her skin, especially around her eyes. It certainly worked !

BRedhead59 Fri 13-Feb-15 18:51:24

My mother swore by Ponds Vanishing cream and used it most of her adult life -at 86 her skin is lovely...
you can't get it now so she's changed to Oil of Olay.

whitehouse Fri 13-Feb-15 18:51:31

I have been using Oil of Ulay on my face, neck and decolletage in general since my mid-20's and my skin is brilliant for a Gran heading towards 68 years of age.

Mother always advised me to keep my fair, freckly skin out of the sun. Good advice too.

My Mother and Grandma always had beautiful translucent skin. Perhaps it is in the genes.

Tudorrose Fri 13-Feb-15 18:54:37

Never run with your hands in your pockets, if you fall over better to cut your hands than your face!

MaryXYX Fri 13-Feb-15 18:56:34

A tricky question. The only advice I can remember from my mother was exhortations to wash. I'm now in the situation where the only daughter who is still comfortable with me is giving me advice on makeup - not skincare. I can't really advise her as she has been a woman a lot longer than I have.

Isis1981uk Fri 13-Feb-15 18:59:45

My daughter isn't due until March but I will make sure she starts moisturising & cleansing from her teen years, & drinks plenty of water.

futuregran1 Fri 13-Feb-15 19:23:40

My mother's Mantra was Moisturise, Moisturise, Moisturise. She also impressed upon me the need to keep out of the sun and wore a light long sleeved cotton jacket to cover up her arms when it was hot and sunny. It certainly helped keep the sun spots away!

sylwright Fri 13-Feb-15 20:00:17

My mother never really passed on any skin care tips, the only thing I remember her using on her face was Nivea cream, or Ponds cold cream.

I remember reading an article as a teenager that suggested you always moisturise your neck same time you do your face. I also put cream on my chest, and always use moisturisers with at least sun factor 15 in them as I've read that the sun is aging even in the winter.

henbane Fri 13-Feb-15 20:54:42

The best beauty tip came not from my mother but from the problem pages of a teen mag (no I can't remember which one!) Someone had written bewailing the fact that she was plagued with spots. The reply included the comforting statement that if you get a lot of spots you're less likely to get dry skin & hence wrinkles later. I've no idea if this was true, but I was the only girl in my class who didn't get spots, so I decided I must have dry skin & should moisturise. Believe me most teenagers in those days couldn't bother less about skin care, a beauty routine was all about slapping on a thick layer of max factor pancake to cover up the blemishes - but I started moisturising when I was 14 & have kept it up ever since. Approaching 70, the wrinkles are definitely taking over - but until a few years ago nurses and interviewers regularly looked at me and said, I think I've got the wrong file, you can't really be....? So it has worked!

Gosh our mothers were influential! From the age of 16 as instructed I used a face cream every night, and for years Oil of Ulay was the magic potion.Getting one's beauty sleep was also strongly advised. Thanks mum!
