We've been asked by L'Oreal to find out from gransnetters about beauty tips that have been passed between the generations.

So, what beauty tips did you get from your mother? Maybe she had some great skincare tips that you've followed for years? Or perhaps you have some beauty tips that you've shared with your daughter? Or maybe some tips that you definitely won't be handing down!

Whatever your top tips are - L'Oreal would love to hear about them!

Everyone who adds a comment to this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one winner will receive a L'Oreal goodie bag worth £200.

Please note your anonymous comments may be included on L'Oreal's social media channels, and possibly elsewhere, so please only post if you're comfortable with this.

I was always told to look after your teeth. The teeth and gums support the lower structure of your face and keep it looking good and firm. To lose teeth is a very ageing process and can be avoided by attention to good dental health.

Take your cleanser off with a clean damp face flannel - cleans and exfoliates. Vaseline on eyebrows, lips, elbows and rubbed into cuticles. It doesn't matter which skin cream you use as long as you never forget to use it. Stand up straight!

Always wash in rainwater its much softer and keep sskin looking fresh, my brother asked me what I used to keep my skin looking so soft and was amazed thinking I spent a fortune on beauty products!

My mother used to smother her face in Nivea......a long time before lovely products like L'Oreal became available. She always told me to concentrate on my neck as it was the first sign of ageing!

slick your eyebrows with vaseline

My Mother never used anything but Ponds Cold Cream on her face and neck and never, never sat out in the sun! I have tried all sorts of different products on my face and neck but my skin still looks older at 68 than my Mother's did when she died at 93! Mind you, I do (and always have) sat out in the sun. I really should have listened to her!

My maternal grandmother said never dig the dirt out from under your nails with a file. This would damage the nail and increase the space under it for the dirt to stay. Use a nail brush.

Her daughter my mother, did not use nail polish but buffed her nails with carnation nail polish and a buffer covered in chammy leather.

I take a vitimain preparation for nails and skin. I oil my nails each night.

My one and only would be. If you have dry skin make sure from an early age to moisterize your skin everyday till the day you die. You won't regret it as ive been doing it for over 30yrs now and my skin is so lovely and soft.

Always moisturise your skin night and morning, to clean out all of my pores, stuck by this and I must say never had a problem with spots or acne.

after reading all these ideas, why is it that so many women think that after being married for a few years they don't need to bother with there appearance...I know of many women that I have put this question to and they all say the same when answering....I don't need to do all that stuff now.no make up, not interested in appearance. And they walk around looking dull and drab, then wonder why there men are looking at other women and its usually women who have made an effort to look after there selves.

My mum always told me to put ice cubes on my eyebrows to numb the area before using tweezers.

My Mum always drilled it in to me never to go to bed without washing my makeup off properly and moisturising with the correct moisturiser for my skin type. She said wear foundation as little as possible to allow your skin breathe and drink lots of water. I've followed her advice and I'm glad I have. I'm 52 next month and people always take me for 10 years younger than I am which suits me fine.

My mum always told me to wear sunscreen and a sunhat

poppian Sat 14-Feb-15 18:56:50

I have 2 grown up boys and encouraged both to use moisturiser on their face and use hand cream. They will thank me in 40 years!

dcavender Sat 14-Feb-15 19:17:18

moisturise daily to keep your skin supple and drink proper amount of water to keep your skin hydrated and have a regular sleeping regime. Don't overdo coffee and alcahol.

zorran Sat 14-Feb-15 19:27:10

My mum encouraged me to enjoy the sun in moderation, get plenty of fresh air and exercise and eat lots of fruit and vegetables. I think it worked because she's 89 now and I'm 63!

Having a skincare routine is so important if you want to prevent spots

nannyH Sat 14-Feb-15 20:03:59

Back in the 60s we used to think that olive oil was a great suntan lotion!
That's something I won't be passing down to my daughter and granddaughter.

suelowe Sat 14-Feb-15 23:22:31

My mother believed in soap , water , and a healthy lifestyle !!!! And that was it ...nothing more.

jenjinty Sat 14-Feb-15 23:32:49

best tip mum gave me was to separate eggs and use they whites on your face makes for a great face mask

SHORTMAN Sun 15-Feb-15 10:53:45

Less is more when it comes to makeup and real beauty comes from within.

Natmc Sun 15-Feb-15 12:20:57

My mother always told me not to over-pluck my eyebrows, and that their best shape was as close to their natural shape as possible. I didn't listen of course and now, many years and dodgy brow-dos later, I can confirm that she was completely right!

Lorelei Sun 15-Feb-15 13:47:16

A lot of the advice I got was common sense stuff. Remove all traces of make-up at the end of every day and give your face a break every now and then with a make-up-free day. Cleanse, tone and moisturise every day. Be sure to pay attention to 'unseen areas' too - nan was adamant on the importance of moisturising the neck, including the nape, elbows, knees, feet & ankles etc, she would giggle when reminding me to include boobs! Eat sensibly, get plenty of fresh air, don't overdo the sunbathing, exercise even if it's just going for a short walk or doing gardening or other outdoors tasks. I miss my nan!

Don't wash your face with soap.
