Take Five, have launched their new ‘Too Smart To Be Scammed?’ test, as part of Take Five to Stop Fraud week and they would love you to take the test and share your result and your thoughts.

Here’s what Take Five have to say: “Take Five to Stop Fraud is a national campaign that offers advice to help everyone protect themselves from preventable financial fraud. It educates individuals to help them spot scams and urges people to stop and consider whether the situation is genuine – to Take Five and think if what you’re being told really makes sense. Remember, ‘My money? My info? I don’t think so.”

It is becoming increasingly difficult to spot a scam as criminals are more sophisticated than ever; however there are still steps you can take to protect yourself and learn how to spot a scam before you have given away any personal details. Take the test, find out if you’re too smart to be scammed and let us know what you think. How did you score? Did you learn a new way to protect yourself from scams and frauds? What did you find the hardest about spotting a scam? Were there any bits you were surprised you got wrong or right?

Everyone who takes the quiz and posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one GNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

7/8 for me - again for being over cautious. Better that way round I think!

live7 Sun 04-Feb-18 15:15:17

I got 7 . It was a good test and I will show my children as I think it would be good to share this.

I used the HMRC website to do my tax form last year. Within 24 hours I had an email supposedly from a named person at HMRC asking me for personal information. I was immediately suspicious and looked up the HMRC contact details and sure enough it was a scam, they were very obviously used too it, but luckily I didn't fall for it

imacmum Sun 04-Feb-18 15:42:00

PS. I got 7/8 only not recognizing that the message from the bank was genuine. My bank phoned me once on a Sunday afternoon and I wouldn't believe it was them smile

Did this a couple of days ago, but didn't post. I got 8/8, and was surprised. Am posting now, so, fingers crossed.

So many of us were extra cautious on question 6. I think that can only be a good thing! Better safe than sorry, and I still think this could have been a phishing text.

7 out of 8 for me

cheekychicken24 Sun 04-Feb-18 19:25:36

I got 8/8 which I'm pleased about. I did re-read a couple of the questions before answering though. I think if anything I'm inclined to be over cautious, which can surely only be a good thing!

flossy1973 Sun 04-Feb-18 19:57:46

I got 5 out of 8!! Need to be careful!

CF22586 Sun 04-Feb-18 20:00:28

scored 8/8 :-)

Funkyferret Sun 04-Feb-18 21:29:11

I got 7/8. The one I got wrong was a genuine one that I would have called directly outwith the message and queried, so I'm quite happy with that. I rarely receive any spam or phishing via my phone (maybe about twice a year) but I do have quite rigorous malware software set up on it which many people do for their laptops, etc but seem to forget when it comes to phones.

hanarees Sun 04-Feb-18 21:50:24

I got 8! I must be pretty savvy!

joandblunt Sun 04-Feb-18 22:51:35

I scored 7

AuntDahlia Sun 04-Feb-18 23:47:31

I also got 7/8 after being so cautious – still, better safe than sorry, eh?

southernsun Mon 05-Feb-18 10:16:54

A score of 7 out of 8 for me.

dilydaly Mon 05-Feb-18 10:32:19

I scored 6 out of 8 which surprised me ! I will be even more vigilant from now on ! Thanks

sweir1 Mon 05-Feb-18 10:39:47

I scored 7 which I am happy with

franjess2000 Mon 05-Feb-18 10:55:52

I got 5 out of 8. Being too cautious!

lauzc87 Mon 05-Feb-18 14:06:23

I scored 8/8. I'm genuinely suspicious of everything and if there's ever a number or login directly linked in the email text, I don't click it. Instead, I go directly to the website by typing the URL into my browser. I also work with computers, so that probably helps!

karenweedon Mon 05-Feb-18 15:51:05

I thought I would get them all correct but I actually got No6 wrong - just shows we all have to be vigilant - I think if in doubt I would go into my local branch or ring the number I know is correct

cagsd Mon 05-Feb-18 16:11:09

I only scored 6 out of 8, I was surprised as I consider myself usually to be savvy to all this kind of stuff!

emmmaaa26 Mon 05-Feb-18 18:25:25

I got 7 as Im very cautious when it comes to text messages.

Pumpkin2 Mon 05-Feb-18 18:45:25

Another 7/8 here too. I was too cautious on a genuine one.

jomarise Mon 05-Feb-18 19:40:17

I got 8/8 but only because I have had some of the bank text messages before.

Caledonai14 Tue 06-Feb-18 13:03:30

I got 7/8, identifying a genuine one as a scam. Don't feel too bad about it as erring on the side of caution is probably the next best thing to being completely on top of it.
The most obvious scam I had was a man saying he'd just had an overdelivery of beds and wanted to sell one to me cheap. He knew my address and could deliver it immediately. I gave him the chance to say it was a windup and told him I'd be reporting him if not.
It was a local number so I did tell the police, but they said they couldn't act until I told the telephone company, who in turn said they needed a crime number from the police, who in turn seemed very put-upon and mystified at the telephone company's reaction because they couldn't investigate without the company's permission. Sigh.
