Take Five, have launched their new ‘Too Smart To Be Scammed?’ test, as part of Take Five to Stop Fraud week and they would love you to take the test and share your result and your thoughts.

Here’s what Take Five have to say: “Take Five to Stop Fraud is a national campaign that offers advice to help everyone protect themselves from preventable financial fraud. It educates individuals to help them spot scams and urges people to stop and consider whether the situation is genuine – to Take Five and think if what you’re being told really makes sense. Remember, ‘My money? My info? I don’t think so.”

It is becoming increasingly difficult to spot a scam as criminals are more sophisticated than ever; however there are still steps you can take to protect yourself and learn how to spot a scam before you have given away any personal details. Take the test, find out if you’re too smart to be scammed and let us know what you think. How did you score? Did you learn a new way to protect yourself from scams and frauds? What did you find the hardest about spotting a scam? Were there any bits you were surprised you got wrong or right?

Everyone who takes the quiz and posts on this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one GNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

7/8 too. I would not call the number given but would call my usual number for the bank to check and confirm debits.

craftygran Fri 09-Feb-18 09:58:12

I got 7/8 because I was over-cautious. I would have rang the bank myself because wouldn't trust that a text was from the bank

Pittcity Fri 09-Feb-18 09:59:36

I got 7/8 with the same reason as many others. I wouldn't have texted back Y or N but would have phoned the bank on a trusted number.

jacalpad Fri 09-Feb-18 10:00:26

This was a very useful exercise. I got 6/8, but had previously thought I was fairly savvy. Just shows how careful we all must be!

Heather51 Fri 09-Feb-18 10:05:53

Also got 7/8 for the same reason as the other gnetters. Still, better to be over cautious.

glammanana Fri 09-Feb-18 10:06:49

I scored 7 out of 8 a bit over cautious on one question, even though it said it was genuine I still would not reply.

jaymbee36 Fri 09-Feb-18 10:07:23

I got 6 out of 10, I too erred on the side of caution

Pearlsaminger Fri 09-Feb-18 10:09:07

7/8 for me too. I’ve had money disappear from my bank account for an EE bill - I’ve never used EE and the bank refunded the payment immediately. But it seems to be getting easier for scammers and they’ll try anything to defraud us.

Had a friend who joined a dating site after losing her husband a couple of years before, and she had become besotted with a younger man she’d been chatting to, and was planning to meet at the weekend. (She was 60) She was telling me all about him and it set off alarm bells. I asked her if he’d asked her for money and she said no. I forgot about it and we went off for lunch. Lo and behold she got a frantic call during the meal from him, saying he’d lost his wallet and could she lend him £250 until the weekend when he’d pay it back. Gave his bank details and she was going to do it. confused I had to explain it was probably a scam and when we got back to her house, looked this guy up on the internet. Nothing. Checked his profile picture and found it had been stolen years ago from another internet site and used regularly on dating apps to commit fraud. She was gutted but she didn’t lose her money and she stopped all
Communication with him. So easy to get caught out tho, especially when you’re vulnerable.

I got 6 out of 8 through being overly cautious but would ring my Bank direct if unsure.

moxeyns Fri 09-Feb-18 10:14:50

I misread a couple of questions so got a score that's making me blush, given that I work in IT!

blueberry1 Fri 09-Feb-18 10:24:55

7 out of 8,also being over cautious about a bank text.I don't use telephone banking myself though and think I would be mistrustful of any messages by text from a bank.

SillyNanny321 Fri 09-Feb-18 10:29:15

Scored 6 out of 8. Think I was being over cautious as I never trust anything. Always go in to my bank if I am not sure of an email or a text.

inishowen Fri 09-Feb-18 10:34:47

I got 5 right. I am too cautious I think.

Morgie52 Fri 09-Feb-18 10:45:20

I got two wrong but feel I was over cautious. One did not actually apply to me as it referred to online banking which I don’t do!

blubber Fri 09-Feb-18 10:49:35

7 out of 8

Molly10 Fri 09-Feb-18 11:08:15

Likewise, I erred on the side of caution. As I do not get notifications from my bank via my phone I found I was more cautious of these.
The cyber world is becoming more scary than the thought of being mugged in the street.

Lunchtimelady1 Fri 09-Feb-18 11:16:03

Like many others over cautious and rejected a genuine message. Better safe than sorry

adrisco Fri 09-Feb-18 11:26:00

6 out of 8. Not as savvy as I thought! I will have to be careful.

Skweek1 Fri 09-Feb-18 11:36:53

I only got 4 but again because I would not have recognised the phone numbers, so would have checked my on-line account directly or alternatively phoned using the approved number. I'm horribly suspicious!

Grannyanna12345 Fri 09-Feb-18 11:45:48

Same as many others, 6/8 but I was over cautious about the two correct ones. We had a big problem with fraud a few years ago and it was horrendous trying to sort it out.

prancer54 Fri 09-Feb-18 11:52:49

I got 7/8 however the one I got wrong I still would not have trusted!

P3terpan Fri 09-Feb-18 11:56:57

I got three wrong but that’s because I would never call a bank number sent to me via text I would always always call my local branch on the number I know. But a very interesting quiz.

monkeywings123 Fri 09-Feb-18 12:23:12

7 out of 8 for me too . . .we all seem to be doing quite well eh ladies and gents!!

Mapleleaf Fri 09-Feb-18 12:23:47

I got 5/8. I said no to 2 genuine messages so perhaps a bit over cautious, and yes to one which was a scam, so I need to do a bit more research. Thank you for this quiz, it was helpful.

edmontonkitty Fri 09-Feb-18 12:35:59

7 out of 8 but the survey is flawed because you can't tell if the phone numbers are genuine or not. I would always check phone numbers which purport to be from my bank and obviously I can't check the ones in the survey.
