Share your tips for managing joint pain throughout the winter months - £200 voucher to be won

Whether you walk every day, you’re a keen cyclist, or passionate about running, we all know how important it is to get outside in the open air, especially during lockdown. Having been a sportman and keen walker all my life, my knees and back are starting to pay me back. I find that keeping active with a daily walk and stretching exercises on my return keeps the worst excesses at bay. It is good for mental health too in these most stressful of times.
I am lucky enough to live quite close to the Yorkshire Dales and moors so when C19 allows, I shall be back out there in the wilds once more.

luckily don't suffer too much with joint pain, but got a niggly knee which I just make sure I don't push it too much, light exercise but don't over do it!

After a daily warm bath I have a few minutes routine of stretching and flexibility exercises. I think the regularity of it helps. Over time, I feel a lot better.

I religiously take a high strength cod liver oil tablet 1000mg capsule and have a 1/2 hour walk if possible a day, it the pain gets to unbearable which it doesn't since I have started this I put a tens machine it on to the area it hurts the most usually the knee in my case works a treat, some heat pads are good too

I get bad back pain and take paracetamol and occasionally ibuprofen to make it bearable. I also use a 'freeze' gel roll-on to deaden the area. I have enjoyed reading all the comments and will be trying some of the remedies. Thank you!

Each morning before i start the day, i have a teaspoon on Apple cider vinegar mixed with a teaspoon of Manuka Honey into a cup of hot water....what a difference this has made to my aching joints

I find yoga exercises help. Also keeping the affected joints warm by wearing wrist warmers, thermal leggings, etc. A heat pad helps with back pain.

Psoriatic Arthritis. I take fish oil , and turmeric with black pepper, always wear gloves if cold and hand braces at night to prevent accidental knocking of joints . But mainly keep exercising, .

I have arthritis in my hands, knees and hips and the Rheumatologist actually recommended turmeric with black pepper. Apparently the black pepper helps with absorbing especially for the hands.
Tried it for three months and am almost pain free in the hands and reduced pain elsewhere.
I also do Pilates twice a week, to keep everything stretched and more supple. It does help.

I hate it when my joints play up, so painful. I take over the pain relief and have have a soothing warm bath.

The best thing I have ever done to help the pain in my finger joints is to take Turmeric as a supplement. If you decide to try it, they must be the capsules that also contain black pepper to aid absorption . After three weeks my pain was gone. There are lots of research articles on the net about this if you would like to find more information for yourself. I highly recommend people look and perhaps try for yourself.

Even though it can be painful, to keep moving is the best way of keeping joint pain at bay for me. Stretching and weight bearing exercises really help too.

Daily walks with my dog get me going, electric blanket and heated throw for the sofa, also arnica gel helps me.

Daily walks and keeping warm seem to help the most.

My knees used to hurt a lot in the cold. Now, I've knitted slouchy leg warmers - and I wear them, as an extra layer between leggings and trousers. Keeping those calf muscles warm really makes a difference.

Prolonged sitting makes back pain worse. I have a bedsitter arrangement for the winter months. After lunch (or when my back twinges) I have a lie down to relieve the disc pressure.

My electric heated mattress cover and weighted blanket are pure bliss! Sometimes I have a nap, too. In lockdown, it really doesn't matter when I sleep.

Massage. That is the only thing that I can rely on to alleviate my symptoms of fibromyalgia. If I can have a deep tissue massage once every three weeks then I am usually OK.

Also, when the pain is really bad - like first thing in the morning - I listen to music. This usually takes the pain away. I someone would do some research into the relationship between pain and music. I would gladly take part.

Doing alot of walking and stretching exercises. Relaxation as pain and stress/tension are linked. We are one body physical, spiritual, emotional. If one thing is out of balance it effects everything else. Also a acupuncture in the ears is excellent !

I have osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia which began a few years ago and very quickly became extremely debilitating. I have done and do various things all of which have helped although nothing can cure the underlying conditions. I lost weight and started gentle daily exercise as well as doing daily stretches, balance and strength exercises and meditation. Also never get cold and modify your home and routine to avoid wrenching or straining the painful joints so for instance I have an electric blanket and lever taps and wear thermal fingerless gloves at all times even in bed. I take calcium and iron supplements and a glucosamine and chondroitin one. Look at what the physio department attached to the hospital offers, I went on a living with chronic pain course they ran which was hugely helpful in many different ways. There is also the website Versus Arthritis which gives lots of information to help you to choose where to go next and what help to ask for as well as the results of clinical trials etc.

I have got shoulder and leg pains I find doing a bit of yoga helps a bit but I have just started taking vitamin B12 boost spray (I am not taking it for the pain) but I have noticed that my pain in both shoulder are a lot better and my body doesn't feel stiff in the morning anymore Don't ask me why because I honestly do not know why. I will keep taking it as I feel a lot better.

I've noticed that my joints are stiffening up more and more in the last few years, I will be 72 this year. I'm in the "better for motion" camp in that a sore or stiff joint feels better when I walk it out.

I persevere with a Pilates class twice a week as I feel that helps too. We do lots of flexing and stretching in the class, as well as core exercises.

I have recently wondered whether I should try to find a supplement that might help... smile

I use curcumin, an extract of turmeric. Suits me.
