Here's a new Wimbledon thread or those of us who love the tennis this time of year. Who's your favourite player? For me, it's Roger Federer, but Rafa Nadal comes a close second. smile

Has anyone read his training regime [including the fact that his wee is checked constantly to monitor how hydrated he is?]. I'm seriously impressed with the commitment. It's no wonder he looks 'the real deal' these days. I just thought he'd grown into himself over the past couple of years.

WOW! Yesterday's tennis left me utterly breathless. I'm now in recovery mode. grin grin grin

annodomini Sat 06-Jul-13 12:31:05

Not for long, soop. Get that Magnum ready for this afternoon's women's final.

soop Sat 06-Jul-13 12:35:12

anno I would like Lisicki to win. Although Bartoli is also deserving. Isn't tennis wonderful! grin

Who'd've thought with so many top seeds going out that this week would turn out to be so good. Lindsay Davenport said she felt there was 'history' between Lisicki and the Polish girl so I'm hoping todays match will have a nicer feel to it [which I'm sure it will]. I really like Bartoli as well so I hope it's a good, close match [with Lisicki winning].

I was sort of wondering yesterday if Del Potro was a descendent of those Welsh miners that went to Argentina a long time ago; he seemed to be hewn out of granite [no insult meant to the Argentinians by that, by the way].

annodomini Sat 06-Jul-13 13:03:31

Tegan, he's about two feet taller than most Welsh miners - no disrespect to the Welsh, given that Halfpenny has just been named man of the series as the Lions roared past the Wallabies 41 - 16!

I really like both players today, and they've both got grit and determination. It's going to be a fabulous match tennis

Tegan Sat 06-Jul-13 13:11:36

Yes; I did think that too, anno [never quite got over reading How Green was my Valley]. Perhaps his great great grandfather on his mother's side [let me dream].smile. By the way what is the unusual training regime that Bartoli has that was mentioned? Now, she reminds me of one of the Amazons in Swallows and Amazons. And Lisicki still reminds me of Alice in Vicar of Dibley.

Tegan was it Bartoli's father who put barbed wire at the back of the court to make her move nearer the baseline when receiving serves?

Tegan Sat 06-Jul-13 13:29:51

They did mention that [I think] but I thought they were joking confused. On second thoughts I think, perhaps, they weren't...

Just watching Boris Becker interviewing Sabine Lisicki. Patronising git!

Ella46 Sat 06-Jul-13 13:49:55

He's getting worse I think, really up himself!

Tegan Sat 06-Jul-13 15:03:31

I quite like Boris. Struggling to watch this match, though, so channel hopping with the racing.

annodomini Sat 06-Jul-13 15:09:36

Disappointing match so far. tennis Lisicki's mum looks very fed up.

whenim64 Sat 06-Jul-13 15:12:42

I can't watch.........Sabine looks distressed. I hope she gets it together. sad

annodomini Sat 06-Jul-13 15:16:15

She was falling apart a moment ago. Not far from tears. Poor girl.

whenim64 Sat 06-Jul-13 15:18:48

Bartoli reminds me of Monsieur Hulot, with her practice moves on court, and hopping up and down. Can't help but smile smile

annodomini Sat 06-Jul-13 15:42:35

She's so bouncy and was by far the more confident of the two, also a good tactician.

whenim64 Sat 06-Jul-13 15:49:38

Well done, Bartoli. She was the better player today. So sorry for Lisicki, who lost her mojo and got it back too late. She was gracious in defeat - a lovely girl.

betsysgran Sat 06-Jul-13 15:50:25

The girls so obviously have great respect for each other. A pleasure to see. Shame Lisicki was overwhelmed by the occasion.

soop Sat 06-Jul-13 16:11:04

Bartoli's victory well deserved. Lisicki is a charming runner up. Both girls won my respect.

So happy about Marion, I've watched most of her matches and have loved seeing her win through. Its wonderful to see someone who does not fit the mould really succeed at what she is passionate about - just wish my short dumpy 16 year old self could have seen her - I might just have been able to laugh off all the teasing I had back then! She is an inspiration to all of us who were not in the P.E. teacher's good books.
Can always remember standing in my (homemade by Mum) tennis whites holding my bargain basement tennis racquet and seeing the woman's eyes literally roll as she looked at me. Am not saying I would ever have been any good, far from it, its just I was simply written off as being too chunky, too short and too ill equipped!

charming man hmm

Can't sit still now the anticipation is rising for the men's final. I hope it's as momentous as the semis were. tennis
