Amazing Olympics

We seem to have a few moans about the Olympics on various threads, plus our own gransnet games which I am enjoying. Could this be a positive thread about Rio? We don't have one so far.

I can not be on my own enjoying the diving and particularly the amazing gymnasts. Cycling is a bit tedious but can't wait for the athletics.

Ahead of China now. Unbelievable. Has it ever been this good? Also guaranteed gold and silver in the cycling. And Andy, of course.

Anyone staying up for the 400m and 100m?

annodomini Sun 14-Aug-16 20:45:31

So happy for Justin Rose, golf gold medallist. What a final round it was, Rose sharing and exchanging the lead with Stenson until the last green. He so deserves his medal for the support he has given to the Olympics by contrast with players like MCIlroy who said Olympic golf didn't matter!
And what an evening in gymnastics with Max Whitlock getting two gold medals. Cyclists going great guns A good day for GB with Andy still to come - a sailing gold as well, just announced.

Why post that Anniebach? Why perpetuate nasty smears from one social media platform to another?

TerriBull Sun 14-Aug-16 15:10:55

oops typo athlete not athelete

LullyDully Sun 14-Aug-16 14:53:00

It does seem that apart from the green water, the Brazilians have done well.

It must be quite a cost saving with those ornaments they are giving out. The flowers must just get binned, however I do like a good bunch of blooms. Much greener than a massive compost heap I suppose.

annodomini Sun 14-Aug-16 14:03:55

I'm rooting for Justin Rose who, unlike certain other spoilt top golfers, has embraced the Olympic spirit wholeheartedly and is proud to be representing GB. He was leading the field yesterday Hope he keeps it up.
A beautiful picture on TV just now with marathon women running and the Sugar Loaf in the background. Spectacular!

TerriBull Sun 14-Aug-16 13:53:29

I'm not a sports fan but it's hard not to be impressed by our wonderful atheletes, Mo, Sir Bradley and the rest of the men's cycling, wonderful Laura Trott, and the rest of the women cyclists beating the USA. All the others Katarina, Jess Ennis,Briony and Adam. All the rest, just fantastic such dedication. We are only a small island and they have done us proud. Quite unlike our overpaid prima donna footballers who invariably just disappoint hmm

Tizliz Sun 14-Aug-16 13:39:47

Mo said he needs another gold for his youngest child as he has got one for each of his other children

Not read the Twitter but he is as much British as many others are, didn't he come here when he was 6 years old?

Anniebach Sun 14-Aug-16 12:52:02

Perhaps Mo has read Twitter where is it is said he is not British

JessM Sun 14-Aug-16 12:15:11

Jess has had a superb career and she may well feel now, with the baby starting to become a toddler, that she doesn't want to keep on with the heavy training commitment. No one could blame her.
The Phil Jones is a devil for getting people to cry. Didn't expect Jess to well up, and then everyone did (Denise, DH, me...).
I think Mo may step up to the marathon when he is good and ready. But he's got a world champs in London next year and I doubt he'll retire before then. Having done his final MILE in just over 4 minutes! He was emotional too - it's the first time he has failed to say the bit about being proud to represent his country.

annodomini Sun 14-Aug-16 11:45:17

Sad that Jess was eclipsed on 'Super Saturday', but the Belgian winner was evidently an unknown quantity - well, she isn't now! Kat's challenge faded with the throwing events, but her British record in the high jump may make her change to being a single event competitor. Mo was brilliant, after a quick recovery from his fall and then a heroic sprint to the finish. What does it take for an athlete to be knighted?

Charleygirl Sun 14-Aug-16 05:31:45

I agree with Bellasnana far too much pattern on the outfits.

Mo Farrah has done so well- I wonder if he will retire now at the peak of his career?

gettingonabit Sun 14-Aug-16 00:12:51

Super Saturday is here! Let's hope for a repeat of 2012...

gettingonabit Sat 13-Aug-16 23:14:30

I didn't notice the competitors' outfits, but I couldn't help but notice the awful patterned dresses the medal hander-outers are wearing. Bloody hideous!

Bellasnana Sat 13-Aug-16 23:06:07

annodomini I agree with you, they don't look very smart at all. I don't think much of any of the kit worn by our team. Too much pattern going on rather than something more subtle.

Andy Murray's kit reminds me of a pair of summer pj's my DS had when he was about seven years old. grin

Stella McCartney clearly doesn't believe in 'less is more' but I'm sure some people think she did a good job.hmm

gettingonabit Sat 13-Aug-16 23:00:07

g and tea there was a black cyclist competing earlier. From France, I think.

Thanks jalima for the link.

JessM Sat 13-Aug-16 22:54:52

Great performances in the velodrome - medals, world records etc. By women as well as the men.
Those jackets look as if they are designed to be airy and cool if you are stuck, standing in the equatorial sun. I do like the massive GB on the front which (unlike other teams) makes it totally obvious who won. They are the other teams look boring and old fashioned. Good work, Stella Mccartney I'd say.
Not impressed with what appears to be a total breakdown of the filtration system in the diving pool though! Pool closed. What is happening to the rest of the diving schedule?

annodomini Sat 13-Aug-16 22:13:49

What does everyone think of those smock type garments our winners wear to receive their medals? To me they look rather sloppy. What's wrong with a well-fitting track-suit? I hear that Stella McCarthy designed the smocks.

LullyDully Sat 13-Aug-16 21:41:06

Well done our women cyclists.

GandTea Sat 13-Aug-16 21:30:30

Why are there no black cyclists?

Jalima Sat 13-Aug-16 21:06:37

Fast twitch muscles, apparently gettingonabit, there was a programme about it a few years ago.

gettingonabit Sat 13-Aug-16 20:36:55

lully how the heck do Jamaica do it? So many brilliant athletes...

LullyDully Sat 13-Aug-16 20:27:32

As we lived in Jamaica for 6 years , we support them if a Brit isn't in contention. I do like Bolt, so talented and such a character.

whitewave Sat 13-Aug-16 18:15:36
