Amazing Olympics

We seem to have a few moans about the Olympics on various threads, plus our own gransnet games which I am enjoying. Could this be a positive thread about Rio? We don't have one so far.

I can not be on my own enjoying the diving and particularly the amazing gymnasts. Cycling is a bit tedious but can't wait for the athletics.

Shame we didn't see as much of the volleyball, table tennis and handball ( poss cos there were no Brits gaining medals? ) what I did see of those sports was very exciting.

I am not in the slightest bit sporty, and usually don't even bother watching any on TV,unless it is a really big event like Wimbledon or football that has GB in it. But I admit I have been watching at least a couple of hours a day, every day. I have particularly enjoyed the gymnastics, the women's heptathlon, the men's triathlon with the Brownlee brothers taking gold and silver and Mo Farah in the 5000 and 10000 metres. I am so proud we have done so well!

I'm not at all sporty, and can't usually be bothered to watch, but I love the Olympics. Especially the rowing and cycling (is it because we usually win these?!) I shall miss it now it's finished!

It would mean more if all countries could afford to spend the same amount of money, or if there was a cap.
It is great that team GB did well - but it would have been better if it had been on a level playing field, that should be what the Olympics are about.

I didn't watch the closing ceremony live. So decided to watch this morning - but oh my didn't bother watching it all. It was so boring, shame I couldn't appreciate the money and effort that went into it. It could have been short and sweet. Most of the Olympians had already departed anyway.

Brilliant Olympics - makes you so proud!!

I also thought the interviewer set Lyndsey up by leading her on.

JessM Sun 21-Aug-16 21:40:47

Paula Radcliffe was very vocal in defending CS - and not very impressed that Phil Jones had been trying to get Lyndsey to say something indiscrete at a moment when she was exhausted and emotional. I suspect Lyndsey is wishing she had remained silent on the subject.
CS may yet get her Silver in 2012 replaced by a Gold because a Russian beat her and may well have been chemically enhanced.

Grannyknot Sun 21-Aug-16 21:12:07

I think Lyndsey Sharp has a case of sour grapes. It's not as if Caster broke the previous record ...in other words that race has previously been won by a woman who ran faster than Caster.

gettingonabit Sun 21-Aug-16 19:26:14

I don't think Caster's win has gone down too well.....Lyndsey Sharp is well miffed. Quite rightly so, too, imho.

There was a lot of whinging about the amount of TV time this took up when the olypics started.
I watched as much as I could the first week but I was away last week and did not catch any. You can get very involved in these activities.

The Tour of Britain starts on September 3rd and it comes through our town on the 6th of September.
Much to my annoyance I am leaving for Shetland on 3rd of September. I booked a holiday long before I knew about this and I will miss it.

My daughter similarly missed the Tour de France the year they started in the UK. They went through her city as she was setting off to fly to France.

Must admit to not being interested in sport usually but the Olympics have been riveting in parts.
Didn't Nick Skelton do well for the Oldies.
So disappointed about Paralympics

Maggiemaybe Sun 21-Aug-16 08:14:38

I love Nicola Adams, just can't stop grinning along with her grin

I was a bit bemused by the taekwondo. It must be hard to kick someone in the head (doesn't that sound bad?) if they're taller than you. I saw Lutalo Muhammad's bout live. He was so upset when he lost the bout in the last second, but mainly because he felt he'd let others down. It was good to see him smiling again on the podium.

gettingonabit Sun 21-Aug-16 01:21:26

A win for Castersmile.

gettingonabit Sun 21-Aug-16 00:39:24

That silver medallist was guttedsad. Nicola Adams fantastic, and Jade Jones last night too.

I agree the track and field has been disappointing. I wonder why? Maybe the competition's just too stiff.

Such a shame about the 400m relay.

I will SO miss Michael Johnson. A wonderful pundit. I could listen to him all day.

merlotgran Sat 20-Aug-16 19:43:12

Well done, Nicola Adams.

She's so nice, even if she is capable of knocking someone's block off. grin

GandTea Sat 20-Aug-16 19:07:54

And our Taiquondo silver medalist, just watch the interview with im, what a pleasant guy, doesn't seem that he would like to kick anyone's head off their shoulders.
And our women's relay team, wow what a lot of leg grin

GandTea Sat 20-Aug-16 18:54:14

Just catching up, fantastic performance by the Women's Hockey team and I shed a tear with Nicola Adams, what a great girl she is.

JessM Sat 20-Aug-16 18:36:24

Miserable about the men's relay team. All on the word of one judge. They did so well. Anyone know what happened to the Indian team as they were also disqualified.
The US 4x100 team also disqualified on a small point.
Usually they only dq if the baton is dropped, the baton change happens too late or someone impedes another runner. sad sad We are really not doing that well in athletics and the relays were our big medal hopes. (Leaving aside Mo, who needs not to fall down)

tanith Sat 20-Aug-16 16:59:26

Tom Daley didn't make it to the final in the 10m diving he must be gutted.

suzied Sat 20-Aug-16 16:57:15

The best thing about the olympics is the coverage of sports that are never shown on TV at any other time - hockey, trampolining, table tennis etc ( would like to have seen more of the brilliant Chinese table tennis).
I'm not convinced by tae kwon-do or kayaking though - would they have had any coverage if there hadn't been a British medal winner? Not being miserable - good on the competitors of any nation, but I didn't really get some of the sports!
I'm watching the women's triathlon - I thought they all had tattoos on their arms till I realised it was their numbers!

gettingonabit Sat 20-Aug-16 15:04:11

Yes, maggie they were brilliant. And probably in with a chance of a medal.

Great bronze in the 100m women though. Well done them.

Anyone staying up tonight? (I mean this morning, really)

Maggiemaybe Sat 20-Aug-16 14:29:16

Starting outside the changeover section apparently, gettingonabit. I watched the race live last night and after the disqualification the commentary team showed it over and over again, slowed down, speeded up, every changeover. None of the four of them could see anything wrong, but one of the changeovers was difficult to see clearly as the runners were bunched together. An appeal went in, but wasn't upheld. Shame, after they'd run so very well.

gettingonabit Sat 20-Aug-16 11:37:23

jessm thanks. Those swimmers are well naughty. Shame. That Lochte is a bit of alright, thoughblush.

I'm on Catchup now and I have absolutely no idea why the men's 400m relay team has been disqualified. Anyone enlighten me?

Maggiemaybe Sat 20-Aug-16 00:55:35

Same here, Tegan. And if I wasn't out on the wing I was in goal - it took me most of the PE lesson to pad up.

Tonight's game was just fabulous.
